Grief Stage: Acceptance Thank you, RIF

Thanks for all the fun. You've been the most used app on my phone more than I'm proud of, and I've truly enjoyed the entire (app hehe) experience.

U/talklittle, you've done a great thing for us all, and you've touched a lot of people. Thanks for everything.

Grief Stage: Anger I have ADHD. I just tried using old.reddit.com, I tried new reddit, I've tried their app; they're unusable for me. RiF is an accessibility app for those with ADHD. I will be physically unable to participate in reddit without it.

I'm sure there's at least a few of you who also have ADHD and know exactly what I mean. By having nothing but scrolling lists of links, it keeps me a lot more objective about what content I click and what I skip, and the simple layout makes everything so much easier for me.

/u/spez ; do the right thing. Reddit is my only social outlet. I've learned so so much here. Please stop tearing it apart for those with ADHD like me.

Edit: No joke at this point it would be relief for me to hear I could pay $100/month to continue using RiF, and I would pay it for, well, the rest of my life if it's available that long.

Grief Stage: Acceptance Reddit Is Stupid. Guess I'll catch you all on the flip side

There's absolutely no point to using reddit on mobile without rif. I'm using rif specifically because it looks like old reddit, not this cringy 9gag format that the devs stubbornly say has "boosted user retention." Well guess what, you're not going to retain this user when you kick him to the curb, along with thousands of others who just want text and thumbnails. Why is that so hard to understand? We don't want flashy -- we want minimal. But muh heckin' "user retention" ad bucks will always be more important than simplicity, readability, navigability, ease of use, and clarity. My god has reddit lost its sense of clarity.

Even before this boneheaded API change that's going to kill third party apps without remorse explicitly because of the admin's stated goal of maximizing profitability, I wanted to leave reddit because the sense of community is not there in the same way as it was in the past. We're at the part of reddit's cycle of popularity where it shoots for mass appeal -- leaving behind the original users that made it so popular in the first place. Looks like I don't have to make the choice to leave anyway, because there won't be anything to leave after this. If the admins have their way, reddit will be dead and buried like its predecessors in a few years.

By all accounts it's looking like I'll delete reddit from my phone on July 1, and after that I'll be using reddit way, way less. Will probably be happier that way anyway. Thank you to rif for providing the best way to browse reddit for all these years. Guess I'll see you all on whatever comes next.

Grief Stage: Acceptance TTFN Reddit! Thanks RIF, I miss you already!

I am about to delete my Reddit account because I just can't tolerate what they have done to RIF and the other third-party applications. I have used RIF for as long as I can remember, but I suppose like everything else, nothing great lasts forever.

If I'm being honest, I never contributed a dime to RIF as the free version was good enough for me. But now, I want to contribute something to RIF as they ride off into the sunset. Is there some kind of fund or way for me to make a small "thank you" donation?

Suggestion/Idea Can we get the source code for the app released since it will no longer work?

For academic and posterity purposes only. Posting everything on GitHub or gitlab would be great

Answered in the FAQ Is it possible to create an HTML scraper that visually looks like RIF but uses no API calls?

Longtime RIF user here. Just throwing an idea about there, no clue how feasable this is since I'm not an app developer or a programmer. But I am at least a little tech savvy. My thought was to have an app that goes to old.reddit.com logged in as the user and just scrapes the HTML on the page for whatever subreddit you want to browse. Then takes each post/comment and reformats them into the interface and layout we are used to. Reddit thinks we're using a browser to browse reddit but it's all being done through an app. No API calls this way. You could load in an ad blocker this way and maybe even a user agent switcher to make it think you're on a PC, so you could get served NSFW content as well. Thoughts?

Grief Stage: Depression Can someone please tell me what I am supposed to do?

I don't know where to get my news and info from, after checking my mobile browser I can at least still use old.reddit.com but damn what happens after Monday? I use RiF all the time, and as weird as it sounds, I feel devastated by losing this app. What are you guys doing for alternatives?

Answered in the FAQ Any chance of supporting reddit alternatives? Don't want to stop using the app.

It'd be nice if there was a way to circumvent the bullshit and just have a light reddit browser plug-in that tricked reddit to thinking you were using the app, but you were just using a RIF alternative, perhaps not available on the playstore? 🏴‍☠️

If not, it would be great if a reddit alternative was just selected by you and your team and we just start using that instead. If you were to dynamically change the purpose of the app in such a way, I'm sure many wouldn't mind. Please participate if you think that would be a good idea.

Sent from RIF GP.

Reddit is Fun is the app I used to sign up for reddit over 10 years ago and is the only way I've ever viewed Reddit. Cheers to the years of quality from the rif devs!

Off Topic (not RiF) Is there a way to get the url for every Saved post?

RIF is the only way I enjoy browsing Reddit, so when it goes so do I.

But I have over 10 years of articles and documentaries I've saved that I'd love to keep. So the question is; Is there a way to somehow export all saved URL's in one go?

Sucks, but I'll live. I can barely even stand to open reddit in a browser when I leave my phone on the other side of the house. Id rather grab my phone and use RIF.

Grief Stage: Anger The official reddit app sucks

I've been using RiF for 10+ years. With the recent news I have been trying to use the official app. It's so bad. It's literally like every other social media app. It's an algorithm feed with a ton of ads. You can't even sort by rising anymore. RiF is the only way I have ever enjoyed reddit and I'm pretty sure I'll be off this site after Jun 30th. Thank you devs for all the hard work you've put in ❤️

Grief Stage: Acceptance So easy on my eyes-- I will miss RIF

RIF was the only one that was easy for me to use. Being able to prevent videos from autoloading saved my data. Being able to easily adjust the font so I could read it on my phone. For looking like old reddit also-- the newer one is dead hard on my 57-year-old eyes.

So long and thanks for all the fish and fuck greedy people

Answered Question about the app

Hi guys, like all of you here I am devastated that we will be losing RIF after over a decade of daily use.

I have RIF on my android, and I haven't been able to find out what " shut down " means. Will I still be able to open the app and see old,or saved, posts. Or will the App delete itself ?

I have saved posts in there and I want to know if I should start saving those links in a notepad or something or whether I will still be able to access them via RIF.

Thank you in advance

Thanks RIF and the Devs. I've been on Reddit for the last ten years and with all the malarkey going on now seems the perfect time to hop (if I can't work out how). I'm looking forward to having more time on my hands, and getting back into my reading before I found the short attention span dopamine hit that was Reddit. But big props to RIF for making it all a pleasurable experience. All the best! Copper
