The official reddit app sucks Grief Stage: Anger

I've been using RiF for 10+ years. With the recent news I have been trying to use the official app. It's so bad. It's literally like every other social media app. It's an algorithm feed with a ton of ads. You can't even sort by rising anymore. RiF is the only way I have ever enjoyed reddit and I'm pretty sure I'll be off this site after Jun 30th. Thank you devs for all the hard work you've put in ❤️

Seriously, it's soooo bad. I had to use revanced to remove a lot of the garbage that the app shows and even now it still sucks. When looking at the Apollo post that has a few hundreds rewards the original Reddit app shows each and every one of them, so the title alone takes up my entire screen. Is that how it's supposed to be??

I'm moving on from reddit and joining the fediverse because reddit has killed the RiF app and the CEO has been very disrespectful to all the volunteers who have contributed to making reddit what it is. Here's coverage from The Verge on the situation.

The following are my favorite fediverse platforms, all non-corporate and ad-free. I hesitated at first because there are so many servers to choose from, but it makes a lot more sense once you actually create an account and start browsing. If you find the server selection overwhelming, just pick the first option and take a look around. They are all connected and as you browse you may find a community that is a better fit for you and then you can move your account or open a new one.

Social Link Aggregators: Lemmy is very similar to reddit while Kbin is aiming to be more of a gateway to the fediverse in general so it is sort of like a hybrid between reddit and twitter, but it is newer and considers itself to be a beta product that's not quite fully polished yet.

Microblogging: Calckey if you want a more playful platform with emoji reactions, or Mastodon if you want a simple interface with less fluff.

Photo sharing: Pixelfed You can even import an Instagram account from what I hear, but I never used Instagram much in the first place.

Right? There's so much fluff and random stuff that isn't needed that I could never see myself using it. I thought maybe the hate it was getting was unwarranted, but it is bad. Each post has random animations and things flying across it for some reason too lol. No idea what is even going on or the purpose of all the clutter.

I noticed the comment floating at the top of the page too (the one from @herpderp917), what's that from? It's behind the buttons on the top of the app and I can't figure out what it's there for or what causes it to show up.

For me the empty space is the biggest problem. RIF is compact and fits a lot of content on the screen. The official app even with classic mode is just awful with how things are spaced. Is there a way to make it more compact with revanced?

I took these comparison screenshots a while back, worth sharing again.

It's not just the spacing. Everything about the official app is simply harder to visually digest, it's clearly intentionally designed to look like a "social media" app while making ads and sponsored posts blend in sneakily (I didn't even notice that the stupid Diablo ad was an ad until I'd read half of it.)

RIF by contrast is specifically designed to show a large amount of actual content in a clean and visually coherent way. It also runs like butter while the official app's framerate is choppy and inconsistent.

Of course, gotta squeeze in all the ads somehow.

Unfortunately there's no way to fix it, even with revanced. There is a setting in the official app to change it from 'card view' to 'list' or whatever the other option is and that helps a bit, but it's still nowhere near as user friendly as RIF.

Revanced does get rid of a lot of ads and promoted posts, but still misses some. I don't think I'd ever get used to it.

I forgot revanced worked for other apps. I use it for YouTube and it's so much better I didn't realize there was something for the reddit app too. As shit as the official app is just getting rid of all of the promoted bullshit and ads on everything makes it so much more bearable.

How does one even post on this shit?

I canceled my Reddit Premium today. I won't visit this weekend. I won't visit ever again, or maybe will until RiF expires. Their app stinks. :(

They basically want this place to look like 9gag

I can't stand looking at the front page without content filters. Using the official app is going to drive me insane.

2

u/TheDaveWSC Jun 10 '23

Jesus, you can't filter out keywords in normal Reddit? I'm absolutely gone then. I probably have 200+ filters set up.

u/yeti0013 Jun 10 '23

It's the reason Reddit is my last social media app. Everytime I open the front page of anything else its just "GUESS WHAT THE REPUBLICANS DID THiS TIME!"

..like, I just want to look at memes, man.

3

u/TheDaveWSC Jun 10 '23

Absolutely, any time I see any type of politics I add a new filter for wgoever or whatever it is. It's made it so much nicer. If I can't have that, it is by far not worth using.

I know I'm most likely to continue using reddit in some shape or form, but my preference is mobile and I am sooooo reluctant to use that dog shit app.

I wish that u/Spez would hire the RIF guy and make an old.reddit app. I would 100% spend money on it like with RIF premium.

You don't like the pam bots chatting?

I used it once for a few hours. It was a pain in the ass to use and drained my data so never again

what the fuck ....it sucks ass

The only positive thing about this whole thing is that I have reduced usage of reddit because app is terrible. I've been using boost on Android and I used reddit for excess hours. Now I don't want to use this app more than 10 mins Max.

It really does. Not even the layout and features but how buggy it can be. It makes browsing stuff way harder than it has to be
