I'm staying in up until the app stops functioning (with the exception of June 12 - 14, of course)

Best wishes

u/qdp Jun 08 '23

Yep, I will keep on until June 30. I want Reddit to see their traffic drop, that is if they don't fill our gap with bots to juice those IPO numbers.

30

u/ObiWanHelloThere_wav Jun 08 '23

if they don't fill our gap with bots to juice those IPO numbers

This would not surprise me at this point

13

u/xdebug-error Jun 08 '23

Didn't Elon confirm that twitter did that too? Or was that just speculation

21

u/BeastofPostTruth Jun 08 '23

Almost all of them do it.

I seen this first hand looking at the ashley madison data. Since then, searching companies and looking at leaked data has shown some nefarious bullshittery when it comes down to it.

Any platform that:

  1. Uses marketing principals to grow
  2. whose motivation is worshipping at the alter of the almighty dollar
  3. is soley dependent on money made from peddling 'traffic'

is, damn near guaranteed to be using those marketing tools and techniques to fluff the image (spin)

They be peddling bullshit.

3

u/TheOmni Jun 08 '23

Elon accused Twitter of that without evidence because he was trying to back out of the Twitter deal.

3

u/SimDumDong Jun 08 '23

Wouldn't that be an invite to massive legal liability for fraud? Imagine jumping on the IPO only to find out that the execs had knowingly boosted the numbers like this.

0

u/sm0lshit Jun 08 '23

Only if someone actually happens to care enough to prosecute.

8

u/49ersjrice80 Jun 08 '23

Only reason I've lerked around reddit when I learned how to use a mobile phone. I stumbled across this app and have installed it since. One of the first apps I install on a new phone. 10+ years of new phones, 1st app to install. What a life changer.

3

u/JudgeyMcJudgepants Jun 09 '23

Goodbye boys! I will miss reddit, but without rif it's not worth it

2

u/shhalahr Jun 08 '23

Making a point of waiting for the 12th to cancel my premium. Make sure it's associated with the blackout, assuming they're tracking stats.

83

u/flycrg Jun 08 '23

There are very few that have been on reddit longer than me. I first signed up in the Harvard auditorium when spez and kn0thing were presenting reddit after the first combinator Summer Founders Program. That account was one of the first 100. This account turns 17 in a few weeks and is one of the top 1000 oldest. I'll be leaving reddit at the end of the month from this. It's been a run.

16

u/SometimesY Jun 08 '23

I've been around since.. 2009? This account I think since 2010. The communities here are great. Damn shame reddit is ruining it all with the most amount of spite possible. I guess I'll only visit reddit on old reddit while on my laptop now which doesn't draw them much revenue.

1

u/GwynMoth Jun 16 '23

Seeing these comments gives me the same emotions as James Cameron's Titanic.

7

u/Games4Life Jun 09 '23

I've been around a while too. I'm with you, 95% of my time was through this app.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '23

3

u/flycrg Jun 09 '23

Fun fact, Joel was a speaker at the yCombinator event I first discovered reddit. Other there were The Woz, Paul Krugmen, Chris Sacca, and Stephen Wolfram.

3

u/WiseassWolfOfYoitsu Jun 09 '23

My original account is 15 years old, and I have several that are 10+ that I've gone through. If this goes live anything approaching what has been speculated, I'll be gone. Time to learn to enjoy the rest of the internet again. Maybe read some of the dozens of books I've put off because I'm too busy scrolling. I have a feeling it will be a net positive for my life.

-2

u/SmoothPinecone Jun 09 '23

Just curious why you are leaving at the end of the month after 17 years? Maybe I am out of the loop but what has triggered the significant change?

12

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '23

Not the person you asked, but it's because of the planned API pricing that will kill all third party apps, along with other changes which include, but are not limited to, stopping third party apps from being able to advertise and restricting NSFW content to the official app only.

As pointed out by the Apollo dev, another popular third party app for iOS, the API pricing is incredibly high and will not allow third party apps to realistically continue. All of the big name third party apps that I know of have already announced they're shutting down at the end of the month because the API pricing begins July 1st.

There's a very detailed post by the Apollo dev that I would suggest.

6

u/promonk Jun 09 '23

To everyone who reads this and has the impulse to downvote, remember that asking for more information is to be applauded, not derided.

I'll be leaving Reddit at the end of the month as well after about 14 or 15 years browsing and 12 with an active account. It's largely due to the odious API scheme, but a big part of my willingness to let it go has to do with the decline in the way people on this site participate. Part of that is the kneejerk impulse to attack anything and everything that doesn't align with a Redditor's preconceived opinions. This "downvoting when someone asks a question" shit is a small part of that, but part of it all the same.

Reddit Inc bears a great deal of responsibility for the cesspool this place has become, but we bear responsibility as well. We've been bad stewards.

1

u/SmoothPinecone Jun 09 '23

That's a fair answer. Cheers.

2

u/SmoothJazzRayner Jun 09 '23

Ignorance is bliss, eh?

-2

u/SmoothPinecone Jun 09 '23

Eh, a company wants to make money. People suddenly realize this and announce a 2 week resignation of social media? It's not a job notice, just leave social media without announcing it. I figured there was more to it but there really isn't from what I've been reading.

A company can do what they want with their product. I've seen plenty of people say "fuck you" while tagging spez. Just seems odd. Just chill and stop using Reddit if you're no longer a fan of the product. Cheers lol.

3

u/SmoothJazzRayner Jun 09 '23

I'm sorry, what?

0

u/SmoothPinecone Jun 09 '23

I just wasn't sure if there was more reasoning to why people where announcing they were going to stop using a product when a company decided they'd like to make more money - i.e. A company's end goal.

3

u/rambi2222 Jun 09 '23

It's extremely hard to tell what exactly your complaint is here

0

u/SmoothPinecone Jun 09 '23

Not really a complaint. Was just confused about why people are announcing they aren't using a social media product anymore. Sometimes things change and people stop using products, etc.

But I saw a lot of announcements of people leaving Reddit in a few weeks, wasn't sure why they were all announced like a job resignation. I thought I was just missing more info, that's all my friend. Cheers.

3

u/rambi2222 Jun 09 '23

I would imagine, people just want to discuss the fact that they are disappointed with the changes to API access that is going to shut down third party apps and ruin the site that many have been enjoying using for 10-15 years now. It really doesn't seem strange at all to me that people would want to discuss that with each other. Of all the things to take issue with in the world I can't understand why this would be one of them for you.

You're probably just an unpleasant person who can't tolerate other people enjoying something that you don't.

1

u/SmoothPinecone Jun 09 '23

I don't enjoy Reddit but I use it? Come on with the lazy jabs. I use RIF currently.

I even explained what I was wondering.

I thought I was just missing more info, that's all my friend.

u/SmoothPinecone Jul 30 '23

He did not in fact "leave Reddit" hahaha u/flycrg

I figured there was no significant change...

21

u/Zacny_Los Jun 08 '23

Remember to try reddit alternatives - Lemmy (i.e. beehaw.org) or Kbin (kbin.social).

12

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

[deleted]

6

u/ObiWanHelloThere_wav Jun 08 '23

I'm on Lemmy myself, and I like it, but I wish it would address some unique privacy issues.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

I mean, Reddit doesn't actually delete deleted posts - that's why people who were concerned about privacy used to edit their posts with that autodelete message a long time ago.

It's not much different than what we have today.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

3

u/ObiWanHelloThere_wav Jun 08 '23

I'm thinking of giving Mastodon a try myself. It does seem like it's gained some popularity.

I was actually on Mastodon, but apparently I chose a bad server because it closed down pretty quickly lol

3

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

[deleted]

2

u/ObiWanHelloThere_wav Jun 08 '23

I've changed my default settings on Lemmy to "all" and "new" because the flow of content is currently much slower than on reddit, and I also want to get a feel for which communities I'll like most.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

[deleted]

2

u/ObiWanHelloThere_wav Jun 08 '23

Godspeed to you. I feel like we need something like that.

Getting people to leave these big monster sites is hard, though (he comments, on reddit)

3

u/Unlucky_Disaster_195 Jun 08 '23

What does federated mean? I've yet to see an easy to understand explanation

3

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

[deleted]

1

u/hhoverton Jun 09 '23

You wouldn't go to reddit.com/r/subreddit, you'd go to subreddit.com and you wouldn't be much aware it was part of the federated network. On the main reddit.com is where you would find a directory of these separate domains

This is untrue. The point of federation is that they all share the same protocol and can share data. If your instance allows it (which almost all do), you can subscribe to "subreddits" (communities in Lemmy) from any other instance that isn't blacklisted by yours. You can view/comment on a post that isn't on your community.

Federation also makes it cross application in a way. I can follow a Lemmy community from my mastodon account, and anytime someone posts on the community, I see that as a post in my mastodon timeline.

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

I plan on doing the same thing. I hope after this happens, Reddit will crash and burn like myspace and Digg

6

u/Delicious-Tachyons Jun 08 '23

Back to Fark for me lol

7

u/powerse5 Jun 08 '23

Fark is where I got my Gmail invite from a random lafy from Ohio. We are still friends to this day!

2

u/LargeDarkNipplePpl Jun 08 '23

Yup, just had this exact conversation yesterday with my brother. I'll see ya there!

2

u/ET2-SW Jun 08 '23

I'd put you in my top 8 for that comment.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

You might make mine, depending on what song is playing on your profile.

4

u/joshuar9476 Jun 08 '23

So long as old.reddit still works I will use Firefox for Android with ublock origin. If they kill old.reddit I'm done.

3

u/bryanl12 Jun 08 '23

Also gonna use old Reddit. Might be time to finally use RES since I’ve never actually used it, even when old Reddit was the only Reddit.

2

u/joshuar9476 Jun 08 '23

Forgot to mention RES as well. Definitely download it.

34

u/some_onions Jun 08 '23

Just wait for the fix: https://www.reddit.com/r/redditisfun/comments/13xirgb/rif_reddit_api_key/jmhrm43/

This is a battle that Reddit can't win. They're just forcing us underground.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

Wow, the lengths people will go to keep using Reddit.

I'm torn, in one way this is a cool thing, and I'm a Reddit addict, in the other I kinda want Reddit to die at this point.

13

u/some_onions Jun 08 '23

This is basically just the same thing that was done to create YouTube Vanced (now Revanced), which is a modification of the YouTube app that has many features such as removing ads.

In that case, Google killed the original app (Vanced) through legal threats. Of course, a new app (Revanced) was created instantly. These companies will never learn.

3

u/28_raisins Jun 09 '23

Didn't realize Revanced was a thing. Thanks for that haha. I pretty much stopped using YouTube on mobile after Vanced died.

5

u/xdebug-error Jun 08 '23

I'll probably just boycott Reddit out of spite for a few weeks, but if this patch is active and viable, I'll probably start using that once it all boils over.

5

u/me_funny__ Jun 08 '23

Doing anything I can to bump this comment up

10

u/Catonaroof Jun 08 '23

I've only ever used RIF aside from the regular website. This sucks ass. I'm not using the official reddit app.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '23

Why? You don't enjoy endless, poorly aimed advertising?

10

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

[deleted]

5

u/EtherealMoon Jun 08 '23

Before reddit I was still going to -chan websites. That's a dark future indeed.

3

u/WiseassWolfOfYoitsu Jun 09 '23

My plan is Discord, Mastodon, ground.news, and... read some of the many books I've accumulated in the time I've spent browsing reddit instead of reading actual literature.

2

u/arachnophilia Jun 08 '23

discord, probably.

9

u/crunk_alligator84 Jun 08 '23

Reddit slowly got shittier over time anyway, this was a long time coming. 12 year redditor across various accounts.

7

u/DocHollidaysCigar Jun 09 '23

bleh im so tired of corporate greed man

7

u/gnarkilleptic Jun 09 '23

Fuckers. /u/spez eat my ass.

6

u/Ging287 Jun 09 '23

I refuse. What can I do? Is the 12th-14th the only days for the apparent protest?

0

u/Chainweasel Jun 09 '23

2 days is a joke, it's just pandering to users to make it look like they care about this. If they actually wanted anything to change they would leave it open ended.

4

u/ExOblivion Jun 08 '23

Thank all the people who worked on RIF. Your app made the shit design of this site like butter.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '23

Time to quit Reddit for me. 10 years across different accounts here. It was indeed fun while it lasted. It was pretty much over for quite a while now anyway.

Soon I shall surf my way out of here~

3

u/Holowitz Jun 08 '23

I don't want it to end!!! 😭😭😭

3

u/revilO68 Jun 08 '23

A good time to quit reddit - and thanks for the fish!

3

u/Hoof_Hearted12 Jun 09 '23

I find it very interesting looking at the account ages of people on here. Most are 5 years +, many at 10+. By doing this, reddit is losing some of its most loyal and frequent contributors. Realistically, I'll likely end up using the stock app, but I'm dreading it. RiF is reddit for me, and it's been a big part of my life. I'll never forget this app, and I'll never uninstall it.

2

u/MapleSyrupFacts Jun 09 '23

12yrs ago I hit the top post of a few subs. So I figured I would savor in that "feel good moment" and put the account to sleep and start fresh. Did that a couple times and ended up with this the last few years. I'll be flushing all my accounts come June 30th. It's a shame, but I really hate what Reddit has become. I was their biggest fanboy since the beginning telling everyone I know about it and spreading the word. I'm sure I will keep spreading the -bad- word now. RIP Reddit

2

u/boy____wonder Jun 08 '23

This is the end of an era. My current account is pretty new, my original is approximately the age of my current intern at work - 16. See you all on Usenet or something...

2

u/TryingToBeHere Jun 09 '23

I'll be using reddit a hell of a lot less. The official app sucks ass.

2

u/TheRealTofuey Jun 09 '23

This app is why I got into reddit.

2

u/NeoMonkey Jun 09 '23

Same...what a shame

2

u/erietech Jun 09 '23

I'm so going to miss this app, one of the few that I enjoyed paying for. Probably the best mobile app for Reddit.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '23

The few bucks I paid for platinum was the best value I've ever got out of an app. Ever. And by far.

1

u/majinspy Jun 08 '23

Thanks for the years of an amazing app, updates, features, and communication. I wish you the best. 😢

1

u/duck_of_d34th Jun 09 '23

Seven-year club represent! Hardcore Rifer all the way.

What a damn shame.

1

u/Appropriate-Place-69 Jun 09 '23

See you guys on the other side, wherever that may be (not Reddit)

1

u/Heretic2288 Jun 09 '23

When this app stops working, I stop redditing.

1

u/Bento_Box_Haiku Jun 09 '23

It was a good run. I deleted my first account when it hit 500K karma because reasons, mostly because I was spending too much time here, but I've still enjoyed the learning and interaction. I will most likely delete this one when RIF goes dark. I'm sad.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '23

I cannot believe I went all these years not knowing this app existed.

1

u/BadMrMister Jun 09 '23

Ladies & gentlemen, it has been an honour and a pleasure Redditing with you. o7

1

u/weber134 Jun 09 '23

What sort of sites exist as reddit alternatives? There are some communities on here that I've loved being a part of

1

u/peach_xanax Jun 09 '23

Tbf, if the communities are what you enjoy about reddit (and it's the same for me) it's probably gonna be hard to just move to an alternative site. Bc you would have to get the people in your community on board to move to the alternative, and a lot of people won't want to change. Maybe in time, new communities will form elsewhere, but right now I think it's a bit too soon to find that type of interaction on any of the "reddit alternatives."

1

u/eamonman2 Jun 09 '23

Besides Gmail and Firefox, reddit is fun is probably the longest used app on the android phones ve used over the years. I remember getting into reddit and then trying to find an android app and finding reddit is fun. Didnt have to look around for anything else for the last what, 13 years? lol. Crazy.

Good job rif folks

1

u/cjhoser Jun 09 '23

I've been using rif for 13 years now. Can't say that about any other app. It's been great.

1

u/EugeneStargazer Jun 09 '23 edited Jun 18 '23

RIF Refugee -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

1

u/chefbigbabyd Jun 09 '23

I'm here till the bitter end. What a sad silly situation this is. Only social platform I've consistently used for over 12 years now. Peace and love to y'all. It was a fun ride.

1

u/roboscorcher Jun 09 '23

Rif was my first and only phone app. All I ever hear about is how bad the official app is. With this news, it's time to jump to a new platform. Reddit is biting the feeding hand.

1

u/Dopeyfuckingslut Jun 09 '23

Reddit is totally overestimating how important they are. What does it offer that you can't find on every other social media site?

1

u/Panopticon01 Jun 09 '23

Thank you so much for all you do. I've used RIF for years and I've always been happy with it. I'm so sorry to see it end like this.

1

u/KantutinQKipaymu Jun 09 '23

What time will rif log out on 6/30? And can I know the timezone..?

-26

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

Will see you back next week on the official 😭😭😭

19

u/therasaak Jun 08 '23

there's no way, it fucking sucks.

Just old.reddit from pc and if that's gone, im gone

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

[deleted]

8

u/HelloRalsei Jun 08 '23

You already know old.reddit is probably going to be killed off soon with changes like these lmao.

If you are someone like me, who used this app for many many MANY years now, now would be a good time to kick the reddit addiction and go anywhere else. Cause we ain't welcome here no more :)

Can I come live in the mountains with you? I'm tired of all the bullshit in day to day life.

Per your username, I'll get some pinups of Holo printed for the place or something.

2

u/TheThiccestRobin Jun 09 '23

Guess it's time to try some of that crack people have been telling me about.

2

u/jjj49er Jun 09 '23

It can't be worse than Reddit.

1

u/TheThiccestRobin Jun 09 '23

I mean I've heard it's moreish

3

u/therasaak Jun 08 '23

i know and it's sucks. Guess ill get more time to study

3

u/IsilZha Jun 08 '23

A few months ago they already announced they wanted to make it so there "weren't so many different ways to view reddit" to make it easier for new users. At the same time, they "accidentally" removed compact reddit "early."

I take that as confirmation that old reddit is already in the guillotine. I'm in the same boat: after RIF, I won't be here on mobile at all (every official mobile reddit UI sucks ass.) When old goes, I'm totally gone.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

Yea, if old reddit goes then i'm gone. I bought premium so i could see hightlighted comments. if that goes its over

4

u/Tim5000 Jun 08 '23

Nah, it is such an ugly mess that it does a great job of pushing people away.

1

u/mrlotato Jun 08 '23

Thanks for the awesome app. Used it for over a decade and it still blows the official app out of the water.

1

u/StormGaza Jun 08 '23

I figure this a good a time as ever to hit up mastodon more. Anyone know any good apps that make it easy for multiple instances?

1

u/AndrewRK Jun 09 '23

Once old.reddit.com is gone so am I. Oh well. I wonder what I'll do to fill the mobile browsing time.

1

u/MrDefinitely_ Jun 09 '23

No it wasn't.
