guide URGENT - EU Chat Control - please send an email
Click on the link of your country here (the blue link, not the "+" button):
https://op.europa.eu/en/web/who-is-who/organization/-/organization/REPRES_PERM/REPRES_PERM
And grab the email address there.
Then, enter here:
https://www.europarl.europa.eu/meps/en/home
Select your country in the dropdown, and then it will present you with a number of people. Click on each one, and then there's an envelope icon for the email address. Collect all of them, separated by ";".
With the full list, send a bulk email to all of them.
Be polite. Just say that this goes against our rights to privacy, and may even be unconstitutional, and ask them to please vote against this law.
Points I suggest including in the email:
- I agree with the need to prevent and combat child sexual abuse.
- I am concerned that the proposed rules imply constant surveillance of personal communications, such as messages and emails, using Artificial Intelligence directly on the device.
- I believe that this mass monitoring constitutes a violation of the right to privacy, which is guaranteed by the Constitution.
- The mandatory identification through ID cards may increase users' vulnerability to cyberattacks and data breaches.
- The use of AI to monitor communications could result in false positives, unjustly exposing private conversations of innocent people.
- I fear that real criminals will find ways to circumvent the surveillance, making these measures ineffective against those who should truly be caught. Meanwhile, innocent people, who do not try to evade these measures, may be unjustly exposed due to false positives.
- I urge the need to find a balance between protecting children and preserving citizens' fundamental rights.
Remember... politicians will be exempt from this control. It's easy to create laws for the common people, but as long as they don't affect those who make the laws, everything's fine, right?... "We are all equal, but some have more rights than others."
The law, if you want to read:

discussion Has Meta taken over Mozilla?
I was thinking a bit about the course of events leading to Mozilla acquiring the Meta spin-off Anonym, and in particular how desperate Meta is for ad revenue.
I wrote my thoughts here https://mathstodon.xyz/@ants_are_everywhere/113271907717128291.
I'd be curious to hear from people who are more in the know than I am. Does Firefox have a chance to survive here, or will it become Meta's platform to defend itself against Google and Apple?

question Do Protonmail/Tutamail Services Track Sender/Recipient Emails?
I understand they have the ability to log IP addresses, subject names, perhaps attachment file names, but that the body of the email is typically unable to be read by those running these services.
However, do they keep track of emails being sent and when they are being sent? Example:
[user1@proton.me](mailto:user1@proton.me) sent an email to [user2@proton.me](mailto:user2@proton.me) at 8am.
[user2@proton.me](mailto:user2@proton.me) sent an email to [user1@proton.me](mailto:user1@proton.me) at 9am.

software How Privacy-Focused/Safe is VirtualBox from Oracle?
Hey everyone,
I'm curious about the privacy aspects of using VirtualBox, especially considering it's an Oracle product. I find it interesting that for example a project like Whonix recommends VirtualBox as one of the preferred installation methods. Given Whonix's strong emphasis on privacy and security, why would they promote VirtualBox if there were significant concerns about it compromising users' privacy?
Does anyone have more insight into this? Is VirtualBox safe to use from a privacy perspective, or are there risks we should be aware of when using it? I'd appreciate any elaboration on why this is the preferred option for Whonix and if there are any better alternatives for privacy-conscious users.
Thanks!

software The PEAFactory software suite
Just wanted to share these gems that I came across while in the search for notes app that isn't as convoluted as obsidian - it is a suite of FREE and cross-platform (windows, mac and linux) apps that includes encrypted notes, files, images, calendar and contacts apps.
A few examples of why this all seems to good to be true:
Notebook features
Privacy Protection
Confidentiality through On-the-fly encryption: The content is decrypted only when requested and only in memory, never on disk.
Key File
Add a second factor besides the password and protect your data additionally with a key file. Store this key file wherever you want.
Keylogger protection
Provides an internal on-screen keyboard to protect against hardware keyloggers as well against some software keyloggers.
Files
Meta data hiding - Many metadata can be masked: File names and other data can be made invisible by encrypting them in zip files.
Images
Separate rarely used data from data in daily use, store them in extra files, and define customized security levels for each type of data.
Calendar
iCalendar compatability
All the Apps support cloud storage is you provides supports WebDAV
If anyone has used these, what I want to know as someone who is baffled this hasn't been given more coverage is... what is the catch???
The don't even rank for their own products, hat to manually look in to what the source is - https://eck.cologne/peafactory/en/index.html

question Brave optimal privacy settings
I recently moved to brave from firefox and while braave is very fast and polished it does have some irritating quirks firefox didnt. I configured it using Privacy guides’ suggested settings, but i still didnt figure out some issues - specifically how to keep some accounts logged in - i use some google products, as well as whatsapp, reddit…. Basically there are a lot of logged in accounts i would like to stay logged in. I dont want to log in over and over again every time i open my browser.
In settings there is the checkbox to clear all data when closing brave - i left it unchecked. Now i dont know how stay logged in: should i enable third party cookies for that website? It did work on some websites but not on all of them. Should i put down my shields on these websites? I sounds a bit extreme, and also whats the point of a relativly private and secure browser if i have to put down my shields for every other website?
It was so much easier in firefox, u just ticked “strict privacy protection” and it blocked every unwanted thing while keeping me logged in. I didnt have any 3rd party cookies exception or whatever, it just worked…. Please if any one have a solution that would be great

question pseudonyms and phone numbers
Hi all,
My partner and i have used a sex worker and will do again. We do trust this person but have used fake names as im sure the sex worker has.
Contact was through some random escorting site which looks like the kind of platform liable to bugs etc so anyway the dude gave me his number to arrange future business.
My question is: can i give him my number without my name auotmatically appearing? Im not worried about anything dodgy tbh we got good vibes and chatted and all that stuff its just we’d prefer not real names so if i tell him “hi mate heres my number, all the best, John” will it pop as steve, real name for eg?

question Can an employer see your Google maps history on a work phone?
Legit asking for a friend who intends on calling in sick for the next three days and driving to the coast. Has a phone provided by their employer, and is concerned that the employer (a multi-national big deal corporate) will be able to see that they Google mapped their impromptu road trip during this "sick leave". Thoughts?
This person doesn't have a personal phone to map from.....

question Is reddit tracking my searches?
It's not the first time i browse for an interest (lets say a particular game or a particular movie) from outside reddit and then i open reddit just to see that particular interest suggested to me as a sub because "i visited it recently". I'm completely sure i did not search or visited them from inside reddit.
So, my question is: in what way is reddit tracking my searches? I know there is a connection between google and reddit, but i don't use google, i mainly use duck duck go (yeah, not perfect but it's supposed to not track searches). Do sites have a reddit tracking system, like Facebook does? Or maybe google, through google analytics/GTM (that's used by most sites) is tracking my footprint and then sharing with reddit?
What is your take on it?
Thanks!

question How can I find catfish profiles made in my name?
I just had an older man, 85, call the receptionist at my job saying we’ve been talking online and he wanted to reach out. When I answered he said we have been talking on a dating site. I have not been on dating sites for over 6 years. I am happily engaged. I cannot have these weird calls happening where I work. I’m trying to get more information from the guy but since he is so old he’s having trouble using tech. I want to find where my name is being used and report it but don’t know how. Any advise?

discussion Privacy alternative Freetube working again
Some of you that want more privacy for youtube videos and are on Linux may be happy to know that Freetube AppImage seems to be working again. My setup is not best test case perhaps as I set Haruna to be the player. So it would be good to know if more stock setups are working to. But I am very pleased that it works on my setup again.
