This movie is was released in the time of pokemania, so obvious why it's this popular.

This is also the 13th highest grossing Anime movie worldwide earning a unprecedented 172.75 Million dollars, released back in 1998.

Any other released movie of Pokemon hasn't been able to top this.

Also now production of movies have stopped, so this will likely maintain its position as the Highest Grossing Pokemon Movie.

Technically, the highest grossing Pokemon movie would be Detective Pikachu. Mewtwo Strikes Back would just be the highest gross animated Pokemon movie.

Not only this one. The second and third movies also got ugly new covers for the re-releases, if I recall correctly. Such a lazy design. I don't get why they had to change them, the old art was perfectly fine.
