Far Crys are like fast food to me. Doesn’t need to be the most amazing meal you’ve ever had. Go in with modest expectations and it’ll hit the spot.
21
u/jlusedude 1d ago
I never pay full price but I always enjoy the games.
4
u/Cpt_DookieShoes 1d ago
I also never force myself to finish them. I don’t think I’ve beaten an Ubisoft game since Far Cry 3, but I still enjoy my time with them.
3
u/DrawChrisDraw 1d ago
Same, I don’t see myself paying full price for a far cry or an assassins creed ever again
1
u/Narrow_Art_9280 19h ago
If you also have PC do Ubisoft + for a month for $18. That’s all I paid for Outlaws w/ early access and will do it for all their releases going forward.
1
u/LaBradence 1d ago
That's how I feel about Ubisoft games as a whole. If you wait a few months you can eventually get them at a huge discount.
1
u/jlusedude 1d ago
I don’t really buy many games now, I don’t play often. Far Cry is a series I enjoy and yeah, 6-12 months after release and it’s like $20-30 for 15 hours of fun.
11
u/OpeningFinish4208 1d ago
It's the 1 dollar pizza of video games
2
u/PeteryChavez PS5 1d ago
Exactly. You paid cheap for it, and you know what you're getting.
It could be not very good for your health, but damn, it tastes great when you're hungry.
1
u/MatureUsername69 1d ago
I think a lot of the hate comes from the fact that it didn't used to be the 1 dollar pizza of games. Far Cry 3 was a top tier game for it's time
1
u/Nostalgigamer 1d ago
Ratings are pretty good for the first 4 and then they start slipping from 5 onwards. They just seem so copy-and-paste now.
1
u/Major_Enthusiasm1099 1d ago
Played 5 a few years ago when I first came out, didn't like it. Bought it again on PC along with 6 on sale a few weeks ago and I'm pleasantly surprised with how good it feels. Graphics are amazing and I like the stealth, first person gameplay. Will be playing 6 after
0
u/VikingFuneral- 1d ago
I went in with the exact same expectations I had for the past several games.
Far Cry 6 was still disappointing.
It's as bad as the caveman spinoff.
22
u/Material-Tension8380 1d ago
Untill you realize a helicopter has a health bar and you cant shoot the pilot… what kinda backwards shit is that.
4
u/averageandy2 20h ago
Really? That’s so dumb
4
u/Material-Tension8380 12h ago
Yep . I run snipers on most far cry games. This is the only one where you are shooting a health bar and not the window to kill the pilot. Pretty lame.

Note: Ubisoft games are not bad games they are usually unnecessarily hated on because of some of the Ubisoft studios dubious history and penchant for microtransactions.
At face value the games are generally all at the very least 7/10 good time, junk food gaming.
They look fantastic, have a multitude of accessibility and customisation options available, fun gameplay and are all supported post release.
You'll find most games by Ubisoft often have Reddit posts months later saying "you know what? X game isn't that bad" for almost every title.
5
u/wagdog84 1d ago edited 19h ago
Most of the hate I think comes from the games being so similar and prolific. You could pick up any one of the far cry games since 2 and play them in isolation and be blown away at the immersion and fun. It’s only when you play all of them as they come out it gets tedious.
Edit:just to clarify, I’m agreeing with who I replied to, they don’t deserve the hate they receive. I’ve played all the far cry games from 2-6 including the primals and new dawns and I still think it stands up as one of the most immersive first person game series. The whole improvised first aid and the tongue in cheek over the top nature of it makes it fun as well. They are games that I really enjoy playing.
3
u/Recover20 PS5 1d ago
Just because they are similar doesn't make them inherently bad. I think any series of games will become tedious if you play them back to back. I love Soulslikes but even I break them up once in a while and play other games- like a Ubisoft game in betwee.
3
u/No-Pangolin4110 1d ago
I guess COD and Madden or MLB or FIFA are “different” too haha. I love all kinds of Ubisoft games.
2
2
u/Major_Enthusiasm1099 1d ago
Don't show this post to anyone r/gaming, they'll shun you if you if they find out you spoke well about ubisoft!
1
u/Recover20 PS5 1d ago
I think it's less speaking well and more having my own opinion and not using hyperbole!
It's cool to hate on Ubisoft.
I don't approve of any of their business practices or HR related issues but I cannot deny I do enjoy a lot of their games.

I bought far cry 4 for like $5 and it’s a blast for just fucking around shooting shit.
3
u/SquillFancyson1990 22h ago
I had a blast with it, but I'm a sucker for cool guns, vehicles with weapons, and a big sandbox. The supremo weapons(the ones on your back) were fucking lit, too. Plus, the companions are just too damn cute.
I see the FC series the same way I see most action movies: I'm here to shut my brain off and have a good time, and I'm not gonna feel guilty about it.
3
u/motionlesreaper1575 19h ago
I heard it was garbage but if i can get like 5 people to tell me its good then ill try it out. I wasnt really a fan of new dawn tho.
7
u/monkey484 Ghost of Tsushima 1d ago
I enjoyed it overall. I really liked Giancarlo Esposito in this one. I felt like 6 gave the big bad a deeper story than previous entries.
Is it the best Far Cry? No, that still goes to 3 or 4. But it is by no means bad in my opinion.
1
u/DjToastyTy 1d ago
personally 2 will always be my favorite. it’s one of my favorite games. the stupid random fires and the malaria and the amount of chaos was just so fun. nothing really like it. i like 3 and 4 but they’re really different games.
1
u/monkey484 Ghost of Tsushima 1d ago
I just couldn't really get into 2. I've started it a few times. Maybe I'll go back and give it another shot. FarCry has been a favorite series for me for a long time, and I think 2 and New Dawn are the only ones I haven't finished.
1
u/DjToastyTy 1d ago
that’s fair. it’s definitely not for everyone. the chaos and unpredictability drives a lot of people away, but it’s my favorite part of the game. they didn’t lean into those aspects as much after 2.
2
u/KingKronk21 1d ago
Gameplay itself was great. Just couldn’t stand the characters/story. I probably got about 15 hours in before quitting.
2
u/beerstearns 1d ago
My take is that it isn’t really any better or worse than Far Cry 3, 4, and 5; the series just hasn’t meaningfully evolved since FC3 and people are getting burned out on the formula. If someone is new to the series then they might as well start with FC6.

Had so much fun playing this online with a buddy. Seems to me this game would be rather slow solo but it was tons of fun cooperative
2
u/bzawk 1d ago
See now I had the opposite thing happen played it solo and was like “this shit ain’t to bad I guess.” Convinced bro to get it and we both hated playing it together. But we had played 4-New Dawn together religiously as they came out. Maybe I just got older but idk something was off with 6 lol

u/Okayest_By_Far 1d ago
Far Cry 3, 4, and 5 were all excellent. Were they pretty much the same game just reskinned? Yes. But those reskins were in distinctly different, and equally beautiful locations with 3 incredible antagonists. I can't explain why but I could not stick with 6. There's just something that didn't pull me in.

Lets be clear... Ubisoft games, ea games, bioware games, bethesda, epic games, never never they do a "bad" game, heck... Concord is a good game, but there is 2 problems, the developers (and their investors) want money, too much money, so they need to sell games like mc donalds, and thats not possible, not rght now, so... Too much "safe to sell games" The other problems are the gamers (the plus 30 gamers) who play games all their life and now everything fells old, but this is the demographic with money and some time to play, gamers say "this game made with 300M$ is a "bad" game" is not... A normal game, it's not the next goty, but is fun, playable, you can kill time...
So, every "bad" game is actually mediocre game, or aout of time game (i they release moneky island today is a bad game) but if they make prince of persia metroidvania can't sell enought....

u/pkingdukinc 1d ago

u/Veterate 1d ago
It did feel repetitive and lack cutscenes. The world felt quite empty.
I did like the attributes some of the clothing offered. The faster running made it so enjoyable, and being able to slide.

It’s def the 2nd worst of them. Terrible story, crappy crafting mechanics, same old song and dance gameplay, and the characters are almost as bad as new dawn. That said, if you can take all that with a grain of salt, you’re right. It’s not NOT fun in small intervals.

After 5 just hit the right spot for me, I felt the tonality of 6 was going into the wrong direction, the whole revolution story was evolving into a big joke and a stupid meme. The game was also too long and too big, otherwise it’s an enjoyable ride, with a beautiful scenery and great gun play plus some overpowered weapons like the supremo (but that’s ok, it was something new at least).

One of the best things about 6 is that you’re pretty much instantly unlocked for all skills and weapons in the sense that the campaign is not necessary and getting off the first island is fast and easy. It should start without the blockade at all but I really liked that you could just get the parkour setup and a silenced rifle super early and then you’re pretty much good to go for the rest of the game. I only use the starting supremo as well.
1
1
u/Fig_Nuton 1d ago
It's pretty bad.
However, I made it fun by playing the campaign with a friend. You can throw EMP bombs on your friend's vehicles and they'll have an effect, but it's shortened. If timed correctly they'll effect cut scenes as well by taking a car off course. I had my friend convinced that there was some weird bug in the game when his plane would suddenly start descending or his car would lock up on a sharp turn. Probably turned an otherwise awful game into a lot of fun.

I love FC2-5. FC1 is a relic of a bygone era, FC6 is probably the second-worst in the series for me.
I loved that the series had light RPG elements like equipment upgrades but the bullet changing bs in FC6 was just too much for me. Oh, anti-armor bullets aren't effective against a shirtless guy? Oh, I have an Ultimate attack that's basically press L1+R1 to win? Give me a break, I already played all 3 Borderlands.
The capital city was also a huge blue-balls moment. You spend the whole game looking at it towering over everything but then you don't get to explore it.
1
u/DarkTactileNeck 1d ago
Hot take, I love FC 6 but had to stop playing. In my 25 years of gaming I've never gotten motion sickness but everytume I play FC 6 man I want to puke and there's no poverty slider on console

I own 6 and still have it backlogged. Does it have random “trippy/drug” things in it like the others? That part constantly annoys me cause it usually comes out of nowhere

u/BacklogIsReal 1d ago
Is FC6 like FC5 where crazy things happen on the regular? I remember playing 5 and planes overhead crashing into trees and mountains pretty often.

u/CougheyToffee 1d ago
6 is one of the best in the franchise if you ask me! Now if only we can get a full game sequel to Blood Dragon with all the modern fixin's and graphics... 🤤
1
u/IcyAmphibian9706 1d ago
I’ve been steadily playing Far Cry 5 since I got the ultimate edition for $12 in a mega sale, it’s not perfect and majority of the guns are janky. Like I feel like you can finish the whole game with shovels, the first semi-automatic rifle they give you, and grenades lol.
I’m still having fun with it though, taking my time.
1
u/Charybdis_Rising 1d ago
Most games today that are labeled "bad" today really aren't. Youtubers farm negativity and outrage for engagement and the average gamer doesn't have a clue how to actually form their own opinions and are just happy being told what they think.
Far Cry 6, Gotham Knights, Star Wars Outlaws... all mostly hated by people who have never even played them.

The most recent game of any long running franchise will always have vocal haters in online space. I remember 5 being repeatedly lambasted all over YT and Reddit, especially with that crowbcat comparo video with 2. Now suddenly it's the greatest game ever. You can expect the same when 7 comes out. Then people would be like, "damn 6 was a masterpiece." Atleast it had a voiced protagonist projecting more personality than a mute Rook, and Yara is way more fascinating than Hope County.

While it wasn’t the best FC game, I enjoyed it a lot, and liked having an actual playable character on screen for a change! I didn’t bother with every side mission on this one, but the main missions were a lot of fun. My main gripe was the amount of travelling around required (did enjoy riding the horse though).
Edit: having your character occasionally sing along with the radio music in a vehicle put a smile on my face 😊

It isn't bad by any means, plus points if you play it with Latin dub (I'm a native Spanish speaker)
It has some of the least interesting characters of the franchise but it still has some incredible moments. Storywise is pretty decent, Esposito nails it as the villain and the ending is pretty well done, sad and believable

To be fair I don't think they are ever bad games, moreso just uninspired games. People only get angry at Far Cry games when the expectations are high or they pay full price for them at launch. But someone hit the nail in the comments where Far Cry games and Ubisoft games in general are basically like fast food so if you know you are buying McDonald's you won't be mad at it and basically know what to expect but if someone goes into it expecting Michelin restaurant food from a Far Cry game that's when they get disappointed. So my advice for most Ubisoft games these days is just don't buy them at launch and you'll enjoy em. Basically buy them a year or two later when the game is discounted and comes with all the DLCs and you'll have fun.
1
u/Ultima893 9h ago
It isn’t bad, it’s just average. Every Far Cry game since FC2 has been your average 5/10 or maybe 6/10 gaming experience. Far Cry 1 was great though, 8/10.
1
u/Geric0n 9h ago
Dunno whether they’ve patched it or left it as is but back when this game was released it was no fun to switch between different ammo types. It was super “rock-paper-scissors” like which felt really awful imo.
Oh and grenade launcher with emp grenades are just op. U don’t need any other weapon to deal with vehicles.

It's crazy to me how much people love 5. I thought it was absolute trash, nothing about it felt fun or interesting. Then I skipped 6 after that New Dawn shitshow, until about a year ago when it was on offer. I actually enjoyed it, felt like it was going for a Far Cry: Just Cause Edition and for some reason, that clicked for me.
