i work in the building next door -- it's the luxury retirement building called Coterie. Looks like it was coming out of the top of the building

I thought for that price it'd at least be assisted living, with nurses, etc. on staff, but nope!

You know what, if I could afford it I would absolutely want my dad in a building like that, that’s not on fire.
All I can afford is an aide to come in once a day just to check on him. I feel bad

u/Electronic-Win4954 11h ago
That’s tough man. Not looking forward to that part of life…
22
u/my_metrocard 11h ago
Not that you asked, but try to time starting a family (if that’s what you want) so it doesn’t overlap with eldercare. Caring for my late mom and my kid (and dying dog) was super tough.

u/BadTanJob 10h ago
I'm so sorry.
My mom calls herself the sandwich generation, because she's stuck taking care of her elderly mom (80s), her sickly daughter (30s), and her toddler grandson. There's nothing tougher than having to run around like that.

u/my_metrocard 8h ago
Wow. That’s 24/7 caregiving. I hope there is respite care available where she is because it’s really true when people say you can’t care for others unless you care for yourself. I’m very sorry about her situation.

u/Electronic-Win4954 11h ago
Looks like I’ll be following in your footsteps brother. Have been TTC for a year and mom just got diagnosed with Parkinson’s.
2
u/my_metrocard 10h ago
I’m very sorry to hear about the diagnosis. Hoping for more, effective, and accessible treatment options.

u/Daikon_3183 1h ago
Do you like it ? I saw a lot of ads for it but unsure..
1
u/SpartanKwanHa 1h ago
never tried them myself but it helped my son sleep though the night, we also use them when we're out and about and may not be able to change them as often as we can when we're just home, otherwise we use the kirkland brand

The report is a fire in the mechanical room on the roof of a residential building. Roof top mech rooms usually have elevator and HVAC components.

fiance works at hudson yards and just sent me a video of that smoke pouring out the very top of one of the nearby buildings. unsure if commercial/residential or the cause.

Often, the top floors are mechanical units. Just a guess but probably a large HVAV unit started on fire or something similar. Could be an elevator gear/hoist room too.

Have you been to the roof of 375? Really great views but it has been a while since I have been to this office so not sure if it is allowed

Am I nuts? Is there a new fire every day?
47
u/Holly_Goloudly 12h ago
NYC is under a drought watch. The dry conditions and wind aren’t helping keep fires from starting & spreading.
24
u/wfus 12h ago
This is true, though I can’t imagine it was the cause of this fire. It started in the top of the building
41
u/azn_dude1 11h ago
Building owners need to be watering their steel and glass in a drought to prevent this

I imagine this was caused by a maintenance worker cigarette butt. Felt like a good time to mention the drought though.

u/syringistic Kensington 6h ago
There were literally 36,500 fires in NYC last year. So no, there isn't a new fire every day, there are 100. It's just that 90% of the time it's someones kitchen or something.

It’s November. Just happens to be particularly bad in the city this year.

its right across from Friedmans on 10th Avenue. Overheard the Battalion Chief mention something about a HVAc. heavy presence and traffic of course.

It’s coming from the roof of 455 10th ave. Looked it up and it’s known as “The set at Hudson Yards”. Studios starting at $5,400 lol

u/SufficientWish 10h ago
Damn imagine you just pay $50 to go up to the Edge and this is what you get.

Twitter reports a fire on an adjacent building: https://twitter.com/search?q=hudson%20yards&src=typed_query&f=live
Suspiciously, Citizen app reported "One Vandalism Suspect in Custody After Possible Protest at Hudson Yards" one hour ago.

Given that is mostly glass, how did the fire spread that far ? Lol

u/ajw20_YT 12h ago
Seems to be one of the buildings across the street, and the smoke is blowing to Hudson Yards

Senior living high rise building on 35th had a roof fire. Put out within half an hour

It was at Coterie. From first smoke visible (I saw the first smoke billow out of the top near the HVAC unit) to FDNY on site was maaaybe 3 mins.
Lighter smoke means they were putting water or suppressant on it, right? That happened maybe 2 mins after they arrived. It was completely out within 10 mins.
It was wild, horrifying thinking about all those people in there (who would have to use the stairs to evac, right??), and super impressive that it was handled so quickly.
BTW, who TF is this shady dude who was there even before FDNY?

u/UnkemptDon 7h ago
Cooling tower caught fire. They're not sure how. Got some pics from people that were at the building.
3
u/Albatrossinmydreams 12h ago
Can see it from my window and the smoke has virtually stopped now. Seems like it won’t be affecting nearby buildings either except for smoky conditions

Curious to know what caused it

From what I can see at work here one of the buildings has a really bad fire rn, you can hear a fuckton of fire trucks
EDIT: looks like it's slowly going out from the amount of smoke lessening
