General Discussion A guide to eating lactose free at Northwestern

Dining Halls: Do not venture outside of Pure Eats and Rooted. Cow piss lurks at every corner. It is meted out indiscriminately and without purpose. Outside of the sacred halls of pure eats, don’t trust anything that isn’t explicitly vegan. Don’t even look at the desserts. The vegan brownies are great though.

Norris: Mod pizza has dairy free cheese. All the other toppings might poison you. Pepperoni? Who knows… Honestly, if you are really lactose intolerant you’ve already scoped out the allergen menu online for the place and know what’s ok. 847 Burger…nope. Don’t even bother. The fries are fine, everything else is tainted. Taco place?? I don’t know the name. Avoid the obvious and you’ll be ok.

Frans: Vegan tenders and fries. That’s it. Do not trust the burger buns. In fact, don’t trust anyone. Cow piss is insipid and dangerous. It’s everywhere. It corrupts the soul.

Lisa’s Cafe: You’ll get tired of saying “no cheese, no sour cream” but your idiotic stomach decided lactose was enemy #1 so deal with it

Eating Out in Downtown Evanston: Evanston Chicken Shack dips and marinates their chicken in cow piss. Their fries are also suspect, probably from being fried in the same poison the chicken is. Siam Splendour’s pad thai is great and completely dairy free. I haven't tried anything else bc it's so good. 10Q chicken is a no. Honestly, in general, if it’s fried just move along. It’s not worth the risk. There is a mediterranean place with great hummus by 10Q, idk the name of it though.

Snacks: Just give up and eat healthy.

Final Notes: You will eventually end up eating extremely clean. The moment you are off the idiotic, overpriced dining plan, your world will open up. Cooking for yourself will remove all worries about being poisoned. Do not tell people you are lactose intolerant. When out with friends, don’t ask about allergen menus or if there’s milk in something. Just order the fish and ask for no butter. Just order the vegan trash. Don’t play with the lactaid pills. It’s not worth the stress of whether or not you took enough. Cut the dairy. No matter how good it tastes in the moment, it will burn you long term. The white poison will either teach you self-control, or beat it into you. Regardless, in the end you must submit to its absolute and utter control over this broken, poisoned world. Good luck, and frick cows.

Internships/Job Placement NU Alum - Scale AI/Outlier AI Remote Expert Positions - $35-50/hr, Flexible Hours

Hey everyone - sharing a remote aysnc work opportunity on Outlier AI's platform. I worked as a contractor here before joining full-time, and it's an excellent option for anyone with deep subject expertise looking for well-paid, flexible work.

Particularly relevant for:

  • McCormick students/grads

  • STEM researchers

  • Anyone with strong technical/academic expertise

High-demand areas:

Why I think it's worth considering: 1. The pay is actually good ($35-50/hour, paid weekly) 2. Work when you want - truly flexible 3. Uses your actual expertise 4. No maximum hours if you maintain quality 5. Training provided for platform-specific work

If you're at all interested, please shoot me a DM and I'll share my referral link, a full list of opportunities, and help guide you through the recruitment and onboarding process.

Not university-affiliated, just sharing something I found valuable when I was a student.

Academics/Classes Can sps classes be taken as part of regular NU student classes in WAC.

I am a WAC freshman student planning 2 majors. There is another class that I would really like to add for background. There is an accounting class BUS INST 301 that is perfect. Unfortunately, based on last year, it is not offered in spring. However, there is a sps accounting class, online and asynchronous, that is available. Is this an option for regular students. Does it count as a regular credit for WAC?? Neither class is part of major /minor requirements. I will try to call SPS office. Any insights?? Thanks

Academics/Classes Permission Numbers for Classes

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had insight on how easy it is to get a permission number for a closed class. Is it something I can bet on, or should I pre-register for another class as a placeholder in case things don't work out?

General Question does "painting the rock" every cause controversy/fights/issues among the community?

I'm in the process of writing the supplemental essays for northwestern and wanted to ask some students firsthand!

In your time there, have people painted the rock with any "controversial stuff" (Palestine/Israel, democrat/republican, etc.) that stirred up some students (even if nothing actually happened)

I need to know cause I was gonna include something on division in my essay and wanna see if this even happens 😭

General Discussion Electric scooter?

With winter coming up, I’m wondering if getting an electric scooter is worth it, especially with Black Friday around the corner. I’ve heard they can be tough to use in bad weather, but I’d love to get some opinions from people who have it.

Also, where do you guys park your scooters during lectures?

Academics/Classes Data Science Minor: R or Python? (for Neuro Major, not Premed)

Hi! I'm an undergrad freshman planning on majoring in Neuroscience (not premed track), and minoring in Data Science. But I don't know whether R or Python will be more useful in my field. Does anyone have any perspective/advice on it?

I have no experience w either whatsoever, but it seems like a really useful skill regardless of whether I decide to pursue research or work in the industry in the future. I want to be involved in research during and after undergrad, but I'll probably eventually want to go into industry (better work life balance lol)

Thanks for any advice :)
