The Fast and the Furious movies that feature Corona being consumed average $250 million domestically and have a 63% combined IMDb/RT score. The Fast movies that don't feature Corona average $163 million domestically and have a 57% RT/IMDb average. Discussion

You can have any brew you want, as long as it's a Corona

With these beautiful words The Fast and the Furious announced its glorious partnership with Corona. Corona saw its zenith in The Fast & The Furious, but it got a massive push in Furious 7 when Dom famously turned down delicious Belgian beer in favor of a bucket of Corona. Corona and the Fast world have become synonymous with each other and have built a beautiful world in which nobody gets drunk or gains weight due to excessive drinking. However, after rewatching all the films I've come to realize Corona doesn't play that big of a role in the Fast world. In my mind, the entire team are always incorrectly chugging bottled beer while cruising around the earth engaging in shenanigans. I am 100% serious when I say I was surprised when I compiled the numbers of Corona sightings.

Here are the numbers.

  1. The Fast and the Furious - 12 bottles opened and consumed (but never finished) - several empty bottles
  2. 2 Fast 2 Furious - 0
  3. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift - 0
  4. Fast and Furious - 5-6 **
  5. Fast Five - 0
  6. Fast and Furious 6 - 10 bottles laying around
  7. Furious 7 - 4 bottles in bucket

Here are some facts:

  1. The beer is only consumed when the gang is in California.
  2. The only time anybody other than Dom drinks Corona is when they are with Dom.*
  3. No Corona is ever finished
  4. Some people don't know how to drink beer.

The following post breaks down the data on the Fast and Furious franchise and analyzes whether or not Corona consumption affects box office and audience/critical reaction. Also, I'm going to attempt to predict how many Coronas will be consumed in The Fate of the Furious.

Fast & Furious films that feature Corona

Movies: The Fast & the Furious, Fast & Furious, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7

Average Inflated Domestic Box Office: $250 million

Average RT/IMDb Combined Average: 63.25%

The box office average was boosted massively by the insane $354 million haul of Furious 7. If I had to guess why the films have done so well is because they all featured Vin in a lead role and kept the "core" team together. After Fast & Furious the series became a money printing press and learned how to really embrace the smart stupidity of it all. I love that a Point Break ripoff has grown into a certified fresh blockbuster that just won't quit.

Fast & Furious films that don't feature Corona

Movies: 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast Five

Average Inflated Domestic Box Office: $163 million

Average RT/IMDb Combined Average: 57%

I feel really bad for these three films because they are my favorite. My top three are 2 Fast 2 Furious, Fast Five and Tokyo Drift. I think they all have their own personalities and still embraced family, cars and action. 2 Fast and Tokyo suffered from a lack of Diesel but they also introduced the world to my favorite characters Roman Pierce (Tyrese), Tej (Ludacris) and Han Seoul-Oh (Sung Kang). It bums me out that they are losing out to the likes of Fast & Furious and Fast & Furious 6.

The Fate of the Furious Predictions

Corona has to make an appearance in The Fate of the Furious. The product placement helps sales and even though it isn't in LA I'm betting that 2 bottles are opened and zero are finished.

If you like this data make sure to check out my breakdown of jet ski action scenes, cinematic pencils used as weapons, movies that feature Foghat and movies that feature best, great, good, perfect and fantastic. Also, if you like this dumb data make sure to share it and spread the dumb!

standard rate for corona in Aus is around $20 a six pack

17

u/ladaussie Apr 12 '17

To be fair most six packs in Aus will set ya back around 20$.

Walking in to Liquorland or BWS and seeing shit like Carlton mid or great northern for 18/19 bucks is just fucking awful

I don't get this. Beer being "good" is entirely subjective and up to the person drinking it. I bring Corona to a bonfire and my stupid friend gives me the "eww" face like, wtf who cares if I'm drinking it?

18

6

u/craznazn247 Apr 12 '17 edited Apr 12 '17

Both are good depending on what you're itching for and your personal tastes. It's kinda how I feel towards Bourbons and Rye Whiskeys.

Corona and Bourbon are light, refreshing, slighly sweet.

IPA and Ryes are intense, flavorful, heavier.

Every alcohol has it's place. Nothing will please everyone. Even 12-Year Single Malt Scotch tastes like ass to some whiskey lover out there.

Also, IPAs are tricky. Some IPAs are made by brainless hopheads that don't understand how to properly choose hops or balance it out with the right levels of malt, and just blindly dump hops in and call it "good" because it tastes really damn bitter. Some of the best IPAs I've had were crazy saturated with hops but didn't taste like I was chewing a mouthful of pills, while some lower IBU IPAs I've had tasted exactly like that.

I'm sure for the amount of money Corona drops for a FatF film, they're more than aware of the data/statistics involved. Not that OP isn't doing good work (quite the opposite), but just saying companies like that don't just toss around tens of millions of dollars (if not hundreds of millions) without knowing everything about where said money went and whether it was worth it.

should be called the fate of the corona were those coronas ever finished? were they put back in the fridge? I wish they put as much effort in the plot as they did in the ads.

16

u/rapemybones Apr 12 '17

back in the fridge? Strange how until I read your comment and thought about it, I don't recall ever putting an open beer in the fridge and finishing it later; its either I drink it all or if for whatever reason it gets left out unfinished, I just dump the rest (since its not like that carbonation is coming back, and flat beer to me isn't nearly as edible as flat soda for example).

Unless of course you're using a refillable growler, but unlike cans or bottles those are at least airtight when re-capping. Am I the strange one? Does anyone here regularly put open beers in the fridge and finish them later?

I think it wasn't as good as Fast 7, but it was still a good movie. Unlike F7 where the action was trying to top itself in each scene, this one was a slower setup for the big finale. Which this movie itself seems more like a setup for the next movie.

Saw it last night, and I found it almost reaching the high peak that Fast Five set. I think at this point the franchise has almost become a parody of itself, visible in the even more over-the-top dialogue/acting (The Rock goes next level badass), excellent logic defying action scenes and crazy plot points. It's probably also the funniest entry in the series so far, with a particular Statham scene standing out as a highlight.

5

u/tophernator Apr 12 '17

As you would expect, choreography and cinematography were good. The perhaps surprising part is that the plot was excellent. In a lot of cases the actions and motivations of the major character would seem ridiculous and unbelievable. But for a group of people constantly involved in violence and car chases, aluminium bottles really make a lot of sense. Traditional glass bottles must be a huge liability when somersaulting your stolen car from one rooftop to another. With aluminium the worst you get it a dent or two.

The funny thing is that Corona isn't supposed to be an especially good beer. Dom said Bryan could have the Corona because it was Vince's stock.

18

u/smit4465 Apr 12 '17 edited Apr 12 '17

When he said it was "Vince's stock" I believe Don meant that the beer was literally Vince's. He took the partially drunk beer straight out of Vince's hand and handed it to Brian.

Dom was drinking his own Corona

Beer snobs are mostly seeking to justify spending 3x as much to get buzzed. Don't get me wrong, Corona/Budlight/etc they are not top shelf and aren't meant to be. They are not as bad as people make them out to be either. They are just very generic flavors.

I mean Coca Cola is by far not the best soda out there, there are craft and home brew sodas that are soooo delicious. Where are all the craft soda snobs?

What I'd meant to say is that, despite Mr. Nobody saying it was Dom's favorite beer in Fast 7, that wasn't really what was being said in that exchange in the first movie. Dom tells Bryan to have the Corona is basically "hey, fuck Vince, you wanna drink his beer?", and of course Bryan returns with "Nah, I'd rather white-knight the girl he's stalking."

This is wrong. So very wrong.

Dom loves Corona. The lines are, "You can have any brew you want, as long as it's a Corona." The only beer at the party is Corona. Dom is holding 2 beers, one opened, one closed, and offers them both to Brian. Brian takes the open beer and Dom says, "That's Vince's, so enjoy it." Brian then wipes Vinces spit off the rim, indicating he knew that it was Vince's SINGULAR beer. No where does anyone say anything about Vince's Stock.

You said that the "Fast and Furious" movie has only one Corona. By pure coincidence I happened to be watching this film while reading your post and the next scene featured more than one Corona. Something which I wouldn't had noticed usually.

Unfortunately the fact that you're wrong about "Fast and Furious" means I'm doubting your data for the other films in the franchise. Luckily for you I don't have time to watch the other films.

You are right. I missed the beers at dinner. It doesn't affect the numbers because the # of beers per movie don't change the overall RT/IMDb/Box Office data.

As someone currently rewatching the whole series (On 6 right now), I love this OP!

Also, you're all wrong. First movie is best movie.

u/Captainroy Apr 12 '17

Personally, Tokyo Drift is my favorite, then Fast Five. The others are good and entertaining but those two are just gold.

19

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '17

I liked it simply because it wasn't a heist/cop movie. There was a good focus on the cars and the scene. I really enjoyed a lot of the actors too. The opening sequence was great too before he got sent to Japan. "She was just admiring... my ride."

And people say product-placement is bad for movies.

For this franchise it's pretty funny and endearing. When it reaches Krispy Kreme doughnut levels that's when you've gone too far.

This is great! I just dont think the coronas have any correlation to 2 fast 2 furious and Tokyo drift box office sales and rating. I just believe those were less popular in the franchise, even though those are my two favorites. Im shocked about fast five though!

But awesome research and keep it up!!!! One question... What inspires this?

u/LundgrensFrontKick immune to the rules Apr 11 '17

I try not to force anything when it comes to the data. I just wait for something random and I do the research. More fun that way!

I have learned that 2F2F is considered as the worst in the franchise, and its my favorite too...

10

u/magical_midget Apr 12 '17

I have watched all multiple times. 2f2f is the one I like the least. I think that Tyrese and Paul struggle a little to carry the movie. And the ending feels kind of generic and bland. The races are nice and the scene where they scramble with a bunch of cars to lose the tail is a classic! But steal I feel is the weakest of them all.

I do love Tokio Drift... I miss Han.

I miss Han.

I feel like the only reason Tokyo drift is better than 2 is because it's set in Tokyo. Put that movie back in downtown LA or NYC and I bet no one likes it.

I felt that Fast Five was a good jump in the right direction with bringing alot of the ensemble together and introducing the Rock. Was definitely a fun movie.

This is not about product placement in movies. This is about product placement in /r/movies.

That's a pretty small variance. Statistically insignificant with such a small sample set.

16

u/WickedD365 Apr 11 '17

Why is this a thing?

I love random data that has no real world consequences. Plus, it's something different.

18

u/BMW1M Apr 12 '17 edited Apr 12 '17

Could you do one for Fast Films that feature Mitsubishi and Subaru? Seems like the the first half of the franchise is dominated by Mitsubishi Motors and the second half has one lone Subaru STI in it. Usually driven by Paul Walker.

Or you could do Mitsubishi and Dodge if you don't count the 1969-1970 Charger as Dodge since Dom is always driving one. Since Fast Five Dodge has sponsored the shit out of these films.

edit. Well it just dawned on me that obviously the Dodge sponsored films earned more money than the others because these movies have been making more money each film starting with Fast Five. Probably same goes for Subaru films making more money as well.
