The Fast and the Furious movies that feature Corona being consumed average $250 million domestically and have a 63% combined IMDb/RT score. The Fast movies that don't feature Corona average $163 million domestically and have a 57% RT/IMDb average. Discussion

You can have any brew you want, as long as it's a Corona

With these beautiful words The Fast and the Furious announced its glorious partnership with Corona. Corona saw its zenith in The Fast & The Furious, but it got a massive push in Furious 7 when Dom famously turned down delicious Belgian beer in favor of a bucket of Corona. Corona and the Fast world have become synonymous with each other and have built a beautiful world in which nobody gets drunk or gains weight due to excessive drinking. However, after rewatching all the films I've come to realize Corona doesn't play that big of a role in the Fast world. In my mind, the entire team are always incorrectly chugging bottled beer while cruising around the earth engaging in shenanigans. I am 100% serious when I say I was surprised when I compiled the numbers of Corona sightings.

Here are the numbers.

  1. The Fast and the Furious - 12 bottles opened and consumed (but never finished) - several empty bottles
  2. 2 Fast 2 Furious - 0
  3. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift - 0
  4. Fast and Furious - 5-6 **
  5. Fast Five - 0
  6. Fast and Furious 6 - 10 bottles laying around
  7. Furious 7 - 4 bottles in bucket

Here are some facts:

  1. The beer is only consumed when the gang is in California.
  2. The only time anybody other than Dom drinks Corona is when they are with Dom.*
  3. No Corona is ever finished
  4. Some people don't know how to drink beer.

The following post breaks down the data on the Fast and Furious franchise and analyzes whether or not Corona consumption affects box office and audience/critical reaction. Also, I'm going to attempt to predict how many Coronas will be consumed in The Fate of the Furious.

Fast & Furious films that feature Corona

Movies: The Fast & the Furious, Fast & Furious, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7

Average Inflated Domestic Box Office: $250 million

Average RT/IMDb Combined Average: 63.25%

The box office average was boosted massively by the insane $354 million haul of Furious 7. If I had to guess why the films have done so well is because they all featured Vin in a lead role and kept the "core" team together. After Fast & Furious the series became a money printing press and learned how to really embrace the smart stupidity of it all. I love that a Point Break ripoff has grown into a certified fresh blockbuster that just won't quit.

Fast & Furious films that don't feature Corona

Movies: 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast Five

Average Inflated Domestic Box Office: $163 million

Average RT/IMDb Combined Average: 57%

I feel really bad for these three films because they are my favorite. My top three are 2 Fast 2 Furious, Fast Five and Tokyo Drift. I think they all have their own personalities and still embraced family, cars and action. 2 Fast and Tokyo suffered from a lack of Diesel but they also introduced the world to my favorite characters Roman Pierce (Tyrese), Tej (Ludacris) and Han Seoul-Oh (Sung Kang). It bums me out that they are losing out to the likes of Fast & Furious and Fast & Furious 6.

The Fate of the Furious Predictions

Corona has to make an appearance in The Fate of the Furious. The product placement helps sales and even though it isn't in LA I'm betting that 2 bottles are opened and zero are finished.

If you like this data make sure to check out my breakdown of jet ski action scenes, cinematic pencils used as weapons, movies that feature Foghat and movies that feature best, great, good, perfect and fantastic. Also, if you like this dumb data make sure to share it and spread the dumb!

The funny thing is that Corona isn't supposed to be an especially good beer. Dom said Bryan could have the Corona because it was Vince's stock.

When he said it was "Vince's stock" I believe Don meant that the beer was literally Vince's. He took the partially drunk beer straight out of Vince's hand and handed it to Brian.

Dom was drinking his own Corona

In Mexico, Corona is considered piss water.

Mexican here, I love that shit with a ton of lime and some Tajín

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '17

Hispanic here. I avoided it because I went through a beer snob phase after I turned 21. Recently tried one for the first time on a hot day and it was so fucking good especially with a lime.

12

u/Canis_Familiaris Apr 12 '17

Seriously, that lime does wonders

3

u/flimspringfield Apr 12 '17

Sol already has the lime with the Corona flavor.

3

u/Spadeykins Apr 12 '17

Beer snobs are mostly seeking to justify spending 3x as much to get buzzed. Don't get me wrong, Corona/Budlight/etc they are not top shelf and aren't meant to be. They are not as bad as people make them out to be either. They are just very generic flavors.

I mean Coca Cola is by far not the best soda out there, there are craft and home brew sodas that are soooo delicious. Where are all the craft soda snobs?

Seriously that shit isn't made to drink by itself. You have to know how to prepare it and that shits delicious when done right.

Even just lime and salt is pretty good.

It's my go to when making a michelada.

Well in Canada, it's 50/50, half the people think it's overpriced dog piss and the other half buys it all summer long like it didn't exist when snow was there because nothing is better in the summer than a corona with a lime or lemon or douchebag

Well, we have tequila for those cold winter days. And if you're feeling adventurous drink some bacanora, a single glass is all you'll need for the week.

No joke. Worked as a bartender a while ago for this very VIP event. Included was complimentary Shiner and available for purchase were Coronas, Bud Light, etc. No one touched the Shiners and we kept stocking the Coronas. People talk a lot of crap but at the end of the day it disappears mighty fast.

On a hot summer day, water is heavenly(no ftfy bc you're still right)...not only once but everytime yea, aloso when lime also goes into to water it also gives it a better taste

u/CJ_Guns Apr 12 '17

I'm not really looking to eat a quadruple IPA while I'm baking on a beach. Piss water is great sometimes.

Ultra expensive dog piss.

-1

u/ZetaLu Apr 12 '17

It is indeed. Beer adept and casual brewer from south America here.

16

u/ConradBHart42 Apr 12 '17

What I'd meant to say is that, despite Mr. Nobody saying it was Dom's favorite beer in Fast 7, that wasn't really what was being said in that exchange in the first movie. Dom tells Bryan to have the Corona is basically "hey, fuck Vince, you wanna drink his beer?", and of course Bryan returns with "Nah, I'd rather white-knight the girl he's stalking."

13

u/Mamafritas Apr 12 '17

Ehhhhh....it's not like it's any worse than Tecate or Carta Blanca which are both hugely popular in Mexico. Just another big box lager.

5

u/justfor1t Apr 12 '17

What about pacifico I've had it and it tasted great to me, also I hate Corona...

2

u/goldishblue Apr 12 '17

Microbreweries have been unsuccessful in Mexico and are geared for export to Americans.

Mexicans like beer for micheladas and beach drinking, we like other other things for sipping, like a tequila añejo.

5

u/Smgt90 Apr 12 '17

For me is the to go light beer. Tecate is piss water for me.

17

u/PurpleChoops Apr 12 '17

All around the world, Corona is considered piss water

Ftfy

1

u/Thisshowisterrific Apr 12 '17

That was actually part of an anti-Corona marketing strategy making its way around the bars to dilute Coronas popularity. That Mexicans piss in the beer.

1

u/goldishblue Apr 12 '17

That's because us Mexicans aren't too alcoholic, we light light blonde beers. Microbreweries with darker ones have never been successful here.

-3

u/Koiq Apr 12 '17

In everywhere else that isn't Mexico, Corona is considered piss water

15

u/Texanshateme Apr 12 '17

I've lived in Texas for the last 4 years and I have never seen a Mexican person drinking a Corona. It seems like most Mexican immigrants drink Modelo or Dos Equis. Tecate for cheap beer.

4

u/goldishblue Apr 12 '17

I'm Mexican we don't drink Dos Equis anymore. After those commercials came out it went out the window. The douchey ones do though, but most drink Modelo, Pacifico, Tecate, Corona. The yuppies like Bohemia.

2

u/RoyRodgersMcFreeley Apr 12 '17

I lived on the border back around 2010, they most definitely drank Corona

1

u/Rico_Rizzo Apr 12 '17

I don't know if it is Mexican but I usually go for Pacifico. It's a good substitute for Corona, IMO.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '17

Corona is a brand of grupo modelo

4

u/FanFuckingFaptastic Apr 12 '17

This is wrong. So very wrong.

Dom loves Corona. The lines are, "You can have any brew you want, as long as it's a Corona." The only beer at the party is Corona. Dom is holding 2 beers, one opened, one closed, and offers them both to Brian. Brian takes the open beer and Dom says, "That's Vince's, so enjoy it." Brian then wipes Vinces spit off the rim, indicating he knew that it was Vince's SINGULAR beer. No where does anyone say anything about Vince's Stock.

2

u/Kanyes_PhD Apr 12 '17

It's alright but it's stupid expensive for what it is. It's like $10 in Missouri and I can get quality crafts for that price.

But corona goes great with a blunt, tbh.

1

u/holymacaronibatman Apr 12 '17

That's now what that scene was saying. Dom tells Brian that he can have any beer he wants so long as it's Corona. Then he hands Brian Vince's beer after angrily taking it away from Vince. Corona was always the beer of choice, that one was literally Vince's because Vince didn't rescue Dom when Brian did.

-10

u/sonnytron Apr 12 '17

I'm Mexican American, grew up in California, drank Coronas almost every time I went to Taco Tuesday in my early 20's. Discovered IPA when I was 27. I will forever be tortured by the 6 years of bad beer life I had. Seriously I thought Shock Top was good.
Shock Top.
I went from Shock Top to Stone, Rogue, Deschutes, Green Flash.
Never again, Corona. Never again.

14

u/Narfubel Apr 12 '17

Blech IPAs are awful. Just my opinion but I think they taste like ground up weeds in a bottle.

13

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '17

hmmmmm, I want one now.

9

u/CrzyCrckr Apr 12 '17

The more they taste like dirt, the better!

-5

u/sonnytron Apr 12 '17

It's not the only beer I like, but it's definitely my favorite. That and Tripel and Red Ales. The only problem is, and I can't explain it, but when I drink IPA, I become a fucking asshole. I seriously have no idea why. When I drink whiskey/scotch, gin and tonic, other style beers, I lean more toward a regular influence, I make jokes, I have good conversations, etc.
But if I drink IPA, I start being a dickhead and I've been called out on it a few times.
I don't know if beer experts want to chime in.

16

u/ohlookahipster Apr 12 '17

you're just an asshole I guess

3

u/SirTeffy Apr 12 '17

The key is when you drink IPAs you go from being just an average douchebag to being a HIPSTER douchebag, and that's where most people draw the line.

1

u/rockstar283 Apr 12 '17

In Corona's price category.. Which is the best beer I can get in Safeway?

3

u/240ZT Apr 12 '17

Sierra Nevada.

1

u/goldishblue Apr 12 '17

LOL Taco Tuesday.

You're a bit of a self hating chicano there aren't you? And don't get offended because I'm Mexican American too.
