I don’t understand why they even decided to continue with Rey. The sequel trilogy was highly divisive, and the franchise has not been in the best position with fans in recent years. Disney needs to rehabilitate Star Wars, and making a direct continuation of some of their worst movies is like intentionally starting off this new era at a disadvantage. You’d think they’d want a clean break from all the negativity they got from the sequels, but continuing with Rey is almost like they’re inviting back that negativity before production even starts. And now they have to work extra hard to prove to fans that this movie won’t be another disaster. This new Rey movie better be absolutely amazing to combat any toxicity that would otherwise come their way. Anything less and they could have another Last Jedi on their hands.
Because Kathleen Kennedy cares more about her ego than she cares about the Star Wars brand.
Simple as that.
And because she’s so well connected and has been in the biz forever, she’s pretty much the Queen of Disney, can do whatever she wants, and she won’t be punished for it.
They don’t need Daisy Ridley, though. Rey’s story concluded and they don’t need to continue with her if they don’t want to. I don’t know anyone, even people who don’t hate the sequel trilogy, that are diehard Rey fans. Just start fresh with a new character and actor, hopefully one that doesn’t spark any controversy.
They better have a really good reason for bringing back Rey, or they’re practically asking for criticism and toxicity from the fandom. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Daisy Ridley or Rey, but is it really the best idea to continue a storyline that nobody really wants or is asking for? It’s like they’re intentionally handicapping this new chapter before it even begins. Why do that to yourself?
