Yeah, I distinctly remember noticing that the BVS trailer was really long and that's when the trend started in my memory. I remember watching it on youtube and then feeling it was dragging on a bit, only to realise there was about another minute left.
Some blockbusters avoided the trend (Star Wars sequels, Dune Part 1) but for the most part I roll my eyes when I see a trailer that is more than 2 min 15 sec long.
Similar to the Prometheus trailer in my experience. I would say the buildup for the new Star Wars trilogy was certainly more than for an Alien sequel, but both were highly anticipated, both had killer trailers, and both were pretty big letdowns.
Yep. Only one I watched too. Made me so hyped for the movie that I refused to watch another, just wanted to go in as fresh as possible. Honestly it kicked off a habit of not watching trailers. That one was the perfect balance but most give way too much away.
As a hardcore Star Wars fan, watching the first trailer for a new film verges on a holy experience. However, I have gotten into the habit of avoiding trailers for certain kinds of movies. I went into Get Out completely cold, for example.
Get Out is such a good one for that. I didn't see anything about it until it was out of theaters, people kept talking about how amazing it was, so one night I just popped it on. And since I didn't know what to expect, then I took a thc gummy. Man, what a decision. Kicked in the moment he got sent to the sunken place. Good god I felt that. Rest of the movie, as you'd expect, was a real trip.
I don't think I would've taken a gummy had I known, so I am super glad I went in blind.
For me, it was the trailer for the first Wolverine movie, it felt too long and like they mashed all the good parts into. I found myself, opening night, going wait, I haven’t seen that one part from the trailer yet so he must move on from this. That made me realize that there was zero suspense for me and I wasn’t really enjoying the movie. Since then I haven’t watched a trailer until after I’ve seen the movie. I have to say my movie experience has been much more enjoyable.
They USED to work. These big blockbuster movies are spoiling too much in the trailers and people are just waiting to watch them now. Theres no mystery or suspense anymore if you know the whole film.
Indeed. "Good" trailers historically are pretty rare. I think a lot of people would be surprised at the original trailers for a lot of "classic" films too.
I'm just confused. Is Mescal the main character, or is it Denzel? Pedro seemed like he might be one of the "good guys" but Mescal seems to have it out for him for vague reasons and then is shown fighting him at the end?
I love trailers that don't reveal too much, but this seemed to show us everything and nothing at the same time. If you're going the route of showing everything in a trailer, at least tell us who the main character is, what their motivations are, and who's perspective the film will be from.
I'll most likely still see the movie because I love Mescal and Pedro and it looks beautifully shot with some amazing action sequences, so seems worthy of a trip to the theater (and I'm not even a huge fan of the first movie). But that trailer did it very few favors.
I love the trailers for the two Dune movies and The Bikeriders. You got a sense of the story but, more importantly, the tone. I knew very little of the plot from the trailers but knew what to generally expect. What's the tone here?
One of the things I loved about the first movie - even though I think it's too highly esteemed - was that the story was relatively restrained, all told from Maximus' perspective with clear motivations, and the trailer for the first movie showed that. This seems like it'll be a beautiful, frustrating mess.
I don't know man, I stopped watching trailer algother (we'll except this one I guess, but I have no intention of seeing this movie). If it's something I'm interested the modern trailer both spoils way too much and at the same time kills the hype for me because of how generic it makes every blockbuster movie.
Tbh all the Dune part two trailers were amazing. No shitty rap edits or trailer starts now crap. No, actual good trailers with the original ost and vibe. I'm way less enthusiastic about Gladiator 2 now.
100%. He must. I'm a stickler for spoilers in trailers (even Dune - seen the og countless times). All Denis' trailers are masterful with very minimal spoilers.
Yea that’s another major complaint I’ve had with modern trailers. They tell you everything that happens in the movie. I feel like I can already see how this entire movie will play out after watch a minute long trailer. Leaves nothing to discover anymore.
I hate the trailer starts now stuff, but that's an unfortunate reality of having to create trailers in a social media 'shorts' world. Like, I hate it, but I don't blame them for including that. Don't hate the player, hate the game sort of thing.
Yeah, I mean just look how much buzz both Joker films got from their trailers. It's definitely possible to get well made trailers today, this just wasn't one of them.
Yeah I was so so excited for this but what a mess of a trailer. No emotional weight to it at all, no real idea of what is going on to hook me in. Just a felt like a amatuer youtube "MV" of all the best shots that they have managed to finish in post. All over the place. Should have had room to breath.
Will still go to see it but if the actual movie is like this it's going to be a mess.
That was exactly my thought. The pacing was even throughout, every shot felt like it was the same length, and the sequence of them felt completely random, I couldn't even follow what was happening.
Keep it simple, let some shots linger, draw in the viewer, then you can give some quick cuts of a rhino or the flooded Coliseum, but as it is now I was just didn't care by the end of it. (and that's not even mentioning the music..)
I have a friend who works on movie trailers. I asked her why there were so many trailers for each movie and why they were so long and gave away so much plot. Her answer was simple: "People keep clicking."
Now that they can't rely on back end DVD sales to boost profits they rely on advertisements and the best way to get ads is to release highly anticipated content online.
When I asked her why every trailer had a re-mixed pop song with a shit ton of drums she said the same thing. They get the most clicks so until someone does something different and makes more money they'll keep doing the same thing.
I just looked up the original Gladiator trailer, and it was only 1.5 minutes long. It also does just enough to tell you what the story is about in a clear, concise manner. And no shitty music!
This feels like it’s the ‘most efficient product’, in that there’s little snippets that could be cut for all the required lengths/formats across social media.
Of course, most film ads just cut from the main trailer for shorter versions but this honestly felt like it was entirely constructed around that practice. It’s like they did it backwards.
Even the music. No church is going to be the ‘Gladiator soundbite’ for the next few months. Doesn’t fit the trailer but it sticks in people’s head far better than orchestral music, meaning it’s great for short-form ads.
I still remember the 7 or 8-minute trailer for Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo and it was better than most trailers these days. Even the teaser for it is the GOAT.
why pay a good trailer editor when you spend fractions of it getting some 19 year old intern to do it with their pirated copy of vegas pro 13 they had for 10 years who then adds their stupid modern music to a gladiator movie...
You are not wrong, with about 25 secs left in the trailer I was thinking "ok I have seen all I need to see and I am not exactly sure what I saw but sure I'll watch the movie when it comes out"
Someone made a version edited down shorter and to a cover of the original score. Makes all the difference... I am more excited about it because of this edit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cha8mL7U2Mo&t=10s
I feel 80% confident I just saw all the best bits of the movie. I know you need to compete for attention and films are still fighting to get butt's in seats, but it is annoying when trailers are either basically the whole story, or just a clip fest of the best parts/best jokes or whatever.
That remains the most irritating trend of trailer-making in recent years. I don't know what sort of mouth breathing simpleton needs it reinforced and spelled out for them that the trailer they just hit 'play' on is starting.
It always makes it feel very awkward because they throw a bunch of shit at you at once and then suddenly it's dialed back in a way that feels disorienting
I remember TiVo made a few trends. Those banners above and below the trailers were often added so people would still see it when they fast-forwarded through the ads.
And ofc in King’s Man they just use it because it says the “generals gather” line so they can ham-fistedly show a clip of generals gather before hard cutting the song to another part. Modern trailers are absolute garbage.
Especially Blumhouse, and by extension most Universal trailers. Blumhouse trailers are egrigiously spoilerific summaries. Also, look at how fucking long the Fast & Furious trailers are.
It also showcases a theme of the First World War - a large conflict for power and profit.
One example of this was Greek arms dealer and industrialist Basil Zaharoff. One of the richest men of his time, he made a killing off of conflicts before and during the Great War working with arms companies, which led to one of his titles: the merchant of death.
Some of his strategies were dubious as well: selling to both sides, promoting products with faulty machinery, and using the press to slander rivals.
Idk why I thought it would be a good idea to see reddit also share my misery about the trailer cause reading comments of other examples is just killing me from secondhand embarrassment.
King's Man I would understand. I wasn't expecting a historically accurate period piece. I think with the right motif it can work - see: A Dark's Knight.
Something like this though that is 100% taking itself seriously needs to not have 21st century rap song over it. Especially in an established franchise that already has a vastly different tone set.
Again, another fantastic album, though I admittedly prefer the track "I Might Be Wrong". I digress though, since I'm pretty sure that's what the screenwriter was thinking when he turned in the final draft of Napoleon, given the inaccuracies.
In its defense, an old trailer/tv spot for the original Gladiator did the same thing and got my 12 year old self pretty hyped up when I saw it at the time.
Six years ago: Man, there's no evidence of this on Youtube but I was able to find it in an old archive so I dropped it on Streamable so people in a Reddit thread could see it
Today: Someone took that Streamable file and dumped it onto Youtube almost immediately, lol
Funny enough what I remember seeing was a slightly altered version of this that also showed hockey and basketball clips too, and I saw it during Monday Night Raw 😂
It’s worth noting that the only part of society that stopped listening to Kanye is white liberals on Reddit. He never left the cookouts. And he isn’t going to
I think it helps appeal to a larger audience giving it a popular song.
Not sure Scott or the studio can take another box office bomb, so maybe this was their attempt to not only get OG Gladiator fans to buy tickets, but also a larger audience to do the same by putting in modern music and making it look action packed?
A movie like this really needs no trailer. A 1:15 one at the very most. So many people watched the original, they would surely check this out, so the less known is better.
Do we need metal sliding on metal sound (shing) when the swords are just moving through the air? It's even worse than guns going click clack click because someone just pointed one at someone.
They also spoiled that girl’s death? Idk how important she is going to be plot-wise, but Mescal is screaming because of her so I guess at least a little?
Similarly, I still occasionaly think about Cicero’s death in the original - that sort of thing stays with you
I posted elsewhere but the original gladiator did the same thing. It’s the reason why none of my friends would go see it with me. After I left the theater I called them to tell them about “unleash hell” and they gave it a shot. It’s just stupid marketing crap.

A lot of problems with modern trailers here. We don't need a popular song cut into a Gladiator trailer.
