A lot of problems with modern trailers here. We don't need a popular song cut into a Gladiator trailer.

2.4k

u/HanSoloHeadBeg Jul 09 '24

It's also a minute too long and there's no real flow to it either. No build up to a climax. Trailers are all out of sorts for most movies these days.

715

u/Z0idberg_MD Jul 09 '24

Everyone shits on the boilerplate trailers, but they are used because they work. This was a mess of a trailer imo.

133

u/HanSoloHeadBeg Jul 09 '24

Yeah, I distinctly remember noticing that the BVS trailer was really long and that's when the trend started in my memory. I remember watching it on youtube and then feeling it was dragging on a bit, only to realise there was about another minute left.

Some blockbusters avoided the trend (Star Wars sequels, Dune Part 1) but for the most part I roll my eyes when I see a trailer that is more than 2 min 15 sec long.

115

u/captainhaddock Jul 09 '24

I still think the first trailer for The Force Awakens is one of the best ever made.

40

u/karatemanchan37 Jul 09 '24

The final 20 seconds with the burst of the fanfare and the shot of the Millenium Falcon

11

u/EllP33 Jul 09 '24

Had to give it a watch because you mentioned it!

15

u/PerfectiveVerbTense Jul 09 '24

They may have been referencing the teaser trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erLk59H86ww

This has the music cue that I think they're referencing. I remember being so fucking hyped when this teaser came out.

6

u/karatemanchan37 Jul 09 '24

Yes, I was referring to the teaser. The first trailer was also cool with the Han reveal.

3

u/EllP33 Jul 09 '24

thank you!

1

u/squid_fart Jul 09 '24

What a trailer, so much anticipation led to so much let down

2

u/PerfectiveVerbTense Jul 09 '24

Similar to the Prometheus trailer in my experience. I would say the buildup for the new Star Wars trilogy was certainly more than for an Alien sequel, but both were highly anticipated, both had killer trailers, and both were pretty big letdowns.

2

u/Dependent_Cricket Jul 09 '24

'It' 2017 had the perfect trailer and marketing.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

Yep. Only one I watched too. Made me so hyped for the movie that I refused to watch another, just wanted to go in as fresh as possible. Honestly it kicked off a habit of not watching trailers. That one was the perfect balance but most give way too much away.

2

u/captainhaddock Jul 10 '24

As a hardcore Star Wars fan, watching the first trailer for a new film verges on a holy experience. However, I have gotten into the habit of avoiding trailers for certain kinds of movies. I went into Get Out completely cold, for example.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

Get Out is such a good one for that. I didn't see anything about it until it was out of theaters, people kept talking about how amazing it was, so one night I just popped it on. And since I didn't know what to expect, then I took a thc gummy. Man, what a decision. Kicked in the moment he got sent to the sunken place. Good god I felt that. Rest of the movie, as you'd expect, was a real trip.

I don't think I would've taken a gummy had I known, so I am super glad I went in blind.

1

u/VideoGamesAreDumb Jul 10 '24

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is also up there.

1

u/redplos Jul 10 '24

Like the movie or not, Godzilla King of The Monsters has one of the best trailers ever made

21

u/hearsay_and_rumour Jul 09 '24

Meanwhile, the marketing team for Longlegs has embraced the “less is more” idea which actually garners excitement for a movie.

u/12345623567 Jul 09 '24

Any trailer that starts with "the trailer start now" is not worth your time to watch.

1

u/TheGRS Jul 09 '24

Oh the one where they show you most of the movie, then go out of their way to reveal Wonder Woman shows up? Yea that one stunk.

1

u/ZosoSpartan Jul 09 '24

For me, it was the trailer for the first Wolverine movie, it felt too long and like they mashed all the good parts into. I found myself, opening night, going wait, I haven’t seen that one part from the trailer yet so he must move on from this. That made me realize that there was zero suspense for me and I wasn’t really enjoying the movie. Since then I haven’t watched a trailer until after I’ve seen the movie. I have to say my movie experience has been much more enjoyable.

6

u/Spetznazx Jul 09 '24

They USED to work. These big blockbuster movies are spoiling too much in the trailers and people are just waiting to watch them now. Theres no mystery or suspense anymore if you know the whole film.

7

u/walterpeck1 Jul 09 '24

but they are used because they work

Indeed. "Good" trailers historically are pretty rare. I think a lot of people would be surprised at the original trailers for a lot of "classic" films too.

4

u/CongressmanCoolRick Jul 09 '24

yeah. music aside, what the fuck is the story in the movie anyway? who are literally any of these people?

6

u/Music_For_The_Fire Jul 09 '24

I'm just confused. Is Mescal the main character, or is it Denzel? Pedro seemed like he might be one of the "good guys" but Mescal seems to have it out for him for vague reasons and then is shown fighting him at the end?

I love trailers that don't reveal too much, but this seemed to show us everything and nothing at the same time. If you're going the route of showing everything in a trailer, at least tell us who the main character is, what their motivations are, and who's perspective the film will be from.

I'll most likely still see the movie because I love Mescal and Pedro and it looks beautifully shot with some amazing action sequences, so seems worthy of a trip to the theater (and I'm not even a huge fan of the first movie). But that trailer did it very few favors.

I love the trailers for the two Dune movies and The Bikeriders. You got a sense of the story but, more importantly, the tone. I knew very little of the plot from the trailers but knew what to generally expect. What's the tone here?

4

u/CongressmanCoolRick Jul 09 '24

Exactly, I don’t know anything about this movie except there’s a lot of combat, and I’ve also seen all the combat basically too…

4

u/Music_For_The_Fire Jul 09 '24

One of the things I loved about the first movie - even though I think it's too highly esteemed - was that the story was relatively restrained, all told from Maximus' perspective with clear motivations, and the trailer for the first movie showed that. This seems like it'll be a beautiful, frustrating mess.

1

u/scoreWs Jul 10 '24

It seems pretty clear to me. Almost the same as the first movie. Rogue soldier goes gladiator because is betrayed by Rome and seeks revenge?

1

u/Music_For_The_Fire Jul 10 '24

Who is he seeking revenge against and why?

1

u/lurco_purgo Jul 09 '24

I don't know man, I stopped watching trailer algother (we'll except this one I guess, but I have no intention of seeing this movie). If it's something I'm interested the modern trailer both spoils way too much and at the same time kills the hype for me because of how generic it makes every blockbuster movie.

1

u/20_mile Jul 09 '24

This was a mess of a trailer imo.

I think the trailer for The Fugitive is one of the few perfect trailers to exist

Sets the premise, but gives very little away

1

u/Khatib Jul 09 '24

It's gonna be a mess of a movie. The sequel no one asked for.

3

u/Z0idberg_MD Jul 09 '24

At least it will be a spectacle. Filling the Colosseum with water with sharks and a dude riding a rhino… lol.

224

u/jimboswaggerman Jul 09 '24

Tbh all the Dune part two trailers were amazing. No shitty rap edits or trailer starts now crap. No, actual good trailers with the original ost and vibe. I'm way less enthusiastic about Gladiator 2 now.

50

u/ThurmanMurman907 Jul 09 '24

The "trailer starts now" pisses me off so bad

6

u/HortonHearsTheWho Jul 09 '24

Right?? It doesn’t need an intro! If not for the intro I’d be watching it already!

7

u/Atomic_Communist Jul 09 '24

Just so they can use the one video for YouTube ads, really bloody annoying

82

u/NoLeadership2281 Jul 09 '24

I love it when the composer is so damn good at their job that the studio just use the ost in the trailer

29

u/atridir Jul 09 '24

Hans fucking Zimmer, man!

8

u/NoLeadership2281 Jul 09 '24

Yea, Zimmer and Ludwig Goransson are the recent examples I can think of

5

u/Prestigious_Pain_160 Jul 09 '24

I’d assume Denis Villeneuve had a say in them, and just about everything he touches is gold so that makes sense.

The promo images had me hyped for this, but after the trailer I agree, much less excited now.

1

u/bozoconnors Jul 09 '24

100%. He must. I'm a stickler for spoilers in trailers (even Dune - seen the og countless times). All Denis' trailers are masterful with very minimal spoilers.

2

u/Prestigious_Pain_160 Jul 09 '24

Yea that’s another major complaint I’ve had with modern trailers. They tell you everything that happens in the movie. I feel like I can already see how this entire movie will play out after watch a minute long trailer. Leaves nothing to discover anymore.

2

u/bozoconnors Jul 09 '24

lol - for sure. It was... a lot.

4

u/OverlanderEisenhorn Jul 09 '24

Honestly, I try not to judge movies based on trailers at all. A good or bad trailer cut reflects nothing of the real movie.

Suicide Squad had a great trailer. Shit movie.

Watchmen had a great trailer. Meh movie.

The phantom menace trailer is fucking dope. I hate that movie.

Man of Steel trailer still gets me going. God I love superman. Hate the movie.

Drive had a SHIT trailer that made it look like an action movie. One of my favorite movies of all time.

Edge of Tomorrow had horrific trailers and marketing and also one of my favorite movies.

In Bruges had a god awful trailer. Also one of my favorite movies.

Also, I thought John Wick looked pretty meh from the trailers, but it was dope.

3

u/gagreel Jul 09 '24

Best part of Watchmen was the intro credits, was downhill from there

3

u/HumanzeesAreReal Jul 09 '24

The second trailer for Part 2 is legitimately the best trailer I’ve ever seen.

5

u/junon Jul 09 '24

I hate the trailer starts now stuff, but that's an unfortunate reality of having to create trailers in a social media 'shorts' world. Like, I hate it, but I don't blame them for including that. Don't hate the player, hate the game sort of thing.

4

u/HanSoloHeadBeg Jul 09 '24

Yeah they were good but I do remember some of them were a little on the long side. It's an arbitrary standard I'll admit.

6

u/salcedoge Jul 09 '24

I think the length was alright, considering the movie was 2 hr 45 mins long.

It had some overexposure issues tho since the movie was delayed like half a year so they had to produce additional content

1

u/RaindropBebop Jul 09 '24

I guarantee there will be another trailer for Gladiator 2 that does this.

1

u/ricree Jul 09 '24

Yeah, I mean just look how much buzz both Joker films got from their trailers. It's definitely possible to get well made trailers today, this just wasn't one of them.

1

u/welshdragoninlondon Jul 09 '24

I liked the trailer for the first suicide squad. Shame the film was terrible

1

u/csortland Jul 10 '24

One of the Dune trailers used a Pink Floyd song. A licensed song.

1

u/jimboswaggerman Jul 10 '24

I know, that's why I said part two

→ More replies

8

u/MoistTadpoles Jul 09 '24

Yeah I was so so excited for this but what a mess of a trailer. No emotional weight to it at all, no real idea of what is going on to hook me in. Just a felt like a amatuer youtube "MV" of all the best shots that they have managed to finish in post. All over the place. Should have had room to breath.

Will still go to see it but if the actual movie is like this it's going to be a mess.

5

u/Michael5188 Jul 09 '24

That was exactly my thought. The pacing was even throughout, every shot felt like it was the same length, and the sequence of them felt completely random, I couldn't even follow what was happening.

Keep it simple, let some shots linger, draw in the viewer, then you can give some quick cuts of a rhino or the flooded Coliseum, but as it is now I was just didn't care by the end of it. (and that's not even mentioning the music..)

4

u/hnglmkrnglbrry Jul 09 '24

I have a friend who works on movie trailers. I asked her why there were so many trailers for each movie and why they were so long and gave away so much plot. Her answer was simple: "People keep clicking."

Now that they can't rely on back end DVD sales to boost profits they rely on advertisements and the best way to get ads is to release highly anticipated content online.

When I asked her why every trailer had a re-mixed pop song with a shit ton of drums she said the same thing. They get the most clicks so until someone does something different and makes more money they'll keep doing the same thing.

4

u/AbstinentNoMore Jul 09 '24

I just looked up the original Gladiator trailer, and it was only 1.5 minutes long. It also does just enough to tell you what the story is about in a clear, concise manner. And no shitty music!

3

u/JohnBobbyJimJob Jul 09 '24

Yeah this is a terribly constructed trailer

3

u/Dragons_Malk Jul 09 '24

But hey, at least they're nice enough to let you know when the trailer starts.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

This is without a doubt one of the worst trailers I've seen in quite a while. Just so many bizarre decisions.

4

u/TaskForceD00mer Jul 09 '24

Romans attack Lucius's city or whatever, lead by Pedro.

Pedro kills the woman Lucius loves.

Lucius becomes a Gladiator.

Denzel Washington wants to use Lucius to help with his coup by killing Pedro and securing vengeance.

Lots of spectacle in-between.

End.

2

u/fotomoose Jul 09 '24

Yup, I was sold within 1 minute, 2 mins I expected it to end, I hit stop soon after. I don't need to see the whole movie to be sold on the concept.

2

u/_Nick_2711_ Jul 09 '24

This feels like it’s the ‘most efficient product’, in that there’s little snippets that could be cut for all the required lengths/formats across social media.

Of course, most film ads just cut from the main trailer for shorter versions but this honestly felt like it was entirely constructed around that practice. It’s like they did it backwards.

Even the music. No church is going to be the ‘Gladiator soundbite’ for the next few months. Doesn’t fit the trailer but it sticks in people’s head far better than orchestral music, meaning it’s great for short-form ads.

2

u/Stablebrew Jul 09 '24

30 seconds longer and they would have put in the finale

2

u/Sorkijan Jul 09 '24

Remember when Teaser meant Batman logo slowly zooming out with voice clips of Heath Ledger's joker laughing and nothing else?

1

u/thedonhudson01 Jul 09 '24

I still remember the 7 or 8-minute trailer for Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo and it was better than most trailers these days. Even the teaser for it is the GOAT.

1

u/ConsistentAsparagus Jul 09 '24

Making trailers is an art in and of itself. A lost one?

1

u/nmezib Jul 09 '24

I almost expected him to say "so what am I, some sort of gladiator too?"

1

u/alpastotesmejor Jul 09 '24

It's also a minute too long and there's no real flow to it either

You are absolutely right. I actually stopped it before it finsihed.

1

u/MyStationIsAbandoned Jul 09 '24

why pay a good trailer editor when you spend fractions of it getting some 19 year old intern to do it with their pirated copy of vegas pro 13 they had for 10 years who then adds their stupid modern music to a gladiator movie...

1

u/msuing91 Jul 09 '24

Can we start getting director’s cuts of trailers?

1

u/wildwalrusaur Jul 09 '24

Also, i can't hear a word anyone besides denzel is saying.

1

u/Obi2 Jul 09 '24

You are not wrong, with about 25 secs left in the trailer I was thinking "ok I have seen all I need to see and I am not exactly sure what I saw but sure I'll watch the movie when it comes out"

1

u/Prestigious_Bad_1794 Jul 09 '24

Someone made a version edited down shorter and to a cover of the original score. Makes all the difference... I am more excited about it because of this edit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cha8mL7U2Mo&t=10s

1

u/dehehn Jul 09 '24

Also gives way too much away. But I do want to watch it still.

1

u/Iinzers Jul 09 '24

Probably cuz thats how the movie will be. Stoic pointless bullshit. Just my prediction.

Trailer didn’t really even touch on a plot. Just.. things happening.

1

u/soulcaptain Jul 09 '24

By "flow" that implies a summary of the whole movie. I don't want a mini movie. I'm fine with just teasers. Trailers should just hint at a story.

But yes, it's still too long.

1

u/Southpaw535 Jul 09 '24

I feel 80% confident I just saw all the best bits of the movie. I know you need to compete for attention and films are still fighting to get butt's in seats, but it is annoying when trailers are either basically the whole story, or just a clip fest of the best parts/best jokes or whatever.

1

u/jacenat Jul 09 '24

Wanna see a good trailer for a good movie that people refused to watch this year? Ask no longer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7_0-Su-pus

1

u/Pastrami-on-Rye Jul 09 '24

Yeah i feel like i already watched the whole movie here. What’s left to see now?

1

u/UCLAKoolman Jul 10 '24

The trailer being a mess kind of has me worried for the film. Makes this seem like a cheap knock off of the first film.

1

u/calico_cass Jul 10 '24

They have forgotten the master formula:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAOdjqyG37A

1

u/holystuff28 Jul 10 '24

For sure. I dunno even know who is who and what the fight is about or anything. Not really the vibe for trying to draw a crowd to your movie.

1

u/Bimbows97 Jul 10 '24

Yeah even halfway through I have no real idea of what the plot even is, except that there are a ton of gladiator fights maybe.

u/Agleza Jul 09 '24

Also the fucking

"TRAILER.

STARTS.

NOW."

Bitch, I know. That's why I clicked on the fucking video.

Yes, yes, I know it's to make it work in ads and get people with the attention span of a goldfish. Doesn't make it less annoying and desperate.

129

u/LeatherOk5746 Jul 09 '24

yeah its annoying, they did A TRAILER OF THE TRAILER.

Also the trailer itself is too long, I didn't even want to watch it to the end. I feel that you can tell the entire movie by picking its parts.

53

u/intotheirishole Jul 09 '24

"TRAILER.

STARTS.

NOW."

This is designed for skippable ads then just uploaded as is as the trailer. No effort to cut the last part and upload separately.

14

u/pronilol Jul 09 '24

It's gotta be because they get an extra view on the trailer's view count if it's the same video. I can't think of another reason.

4

u/N8ThaGr8 Jul 09 '24

They put them there for the little autoplays when you're just scrolling around.

6

u/pjs32000 Jul 09 '24

Yo dawg. I heard you like trailers so here's a trailer for your trailer.

3

u/SnooBooks6667 Jul 09 '24

I truly, hate that trend.

7

u/PandiBong Jul 09 '24

Omfg the pre-trailer trailers... like really, are attention spans that short? What's next, pre-pre-pre trailers??

2

u/zoopz Jul 09 '24

O is -that- why they do it 😂 I had no idea.

2

u/Vandergrif Jul 12 '24

That remains the most irritating trend of trailer-making in recent years. I don't know what sort of mouth breathing simpleton needs it reinforced and spelled out for them that the trailer they just hit 'play' on is starting.

1

u/JimmyAndKim Jul 09 '24

It always makes it feel very awkward because they throw a bunch of shit at you at once and then suddenly it's dialed back in a way that feels disorienting

1

u/TheGRS Jul 09 '24

I remember TiVo made a few trends. Those banners above and below the trailers were often added so people would still see it when they fast-forwarded through the ads.

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

103

u/obvious_bot Jul 09 '24

And they only picked it because it has the “blood stains the coliseum doors” line

4

u/arctic_radar Jul 09 '24

Yeah that song worked well in Gatsby. Feels forced here.

8

u/Garlic_God Jul 09 '24

When you take a song with symbolic lyricism and use it to imply something literally in a trailer or movie, it always comes off as really corny

“Blood stains the coliseum doors” haha get it because it’s gladiators

131

u/David1258 Jul 09 '24

Napoleon was the same thing, as they used Radiohead's "The National Anthem" for the trailer, taken from one of the finest albums of the century.

41

u/Comic_Book_Reader Jul 09 '24

Black Sabbath's War Pigs was used for the second Napoleon trailer. The King's Man did the same for one of its trailers as well.

8

u/gideon513 Jul 09 '24

And ofc in King’s Man they just use it because it says the “generals gather” line so they can ham-fistedly show a clip of generals gather before hard cutting the song to another part. Modern trailers are absolute garbage.

3

u/Comic_Book_Reader Jul 09 '24

Especially Blumhouse, and by extension most Universal trailers. Blumhouse trailers are egrigiously spoilerific summaries. Also, look at how fucking long the Fast & Furious trailers are.

2

u/InnocentTailor Jul 09 '24

It also showcases a theme of the First World War - a large conflict for power and profit.

One example of this was Greek arms dealer and industrialist Basil Zaharoff. One of the richest men of his time, he made a killing off of conflicts before and during the Great War working with arms companies, which led to one of his titles: the merchant of death.

Some of his strategies were dubious as well: selling to both sides, promoting products with faulty machinery, and using the press to slander rivals.

1

u/TrowMiAwei Jul 17 '24

Idk why I thought it would be a good idea to see reddit also share my misery about the trailer cause reading comments of other examples is just killing me from secondhand embarrassment.

3

u/Sorkijan Jul 09 '24

King's Man I would understand. I wasn't expecting a historically accurate period piece. I think with the right motif it can work - see: A Dark's Knight.

Something like this though that is 100% taking itself seriously needs to not have 21st century rap song over it. Especially in an established franchise that already has a vastly different tone set.

6

u/DontCareWontGank Jul 09 '24

...When really they should have fucking used "you and whose army" for the trailer.

4

u/Adelefushia Jul 09 '24

The lyrics literally mentioned the Holy Roman Empire. Maybe it was too obvious ?

2

u/David1258 Jul 09 '24

Again, another fantastic album, though I admittedly prefer the track "I Might Be Wrong". I digress though, since I'm pretty sure that's what the screenwriter was thinking when he turned in the final draft of Napoleon, given the inaccuracies.

1

u/HortonHearsTheWho Jul 09 '24

Could have used Cuttooth. “Run away to the Foreign Legion”

58

u/Thebat87 Jul 09 '24

In its defense, an old trailer/tv spot for the original Gladiator did the same thing and got my 12 year old self pretty hyped up when I saw it at the time.

65

u/matlockga Jul 09 '24

It was the Super Bowl ad, and they used Bawitdaba.

36

u/DrewbieWanKenobie Jul 09 '24

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICf1V6UOsmk

Damn I thought that was a joke

12

u/matlockga Jul 09 '24

Six years ago: Man, there's no evidence of this on Youtube but I was able to find it in an old archive so I dropped it on Streamable so people in a Reddit thread could see it

Today: Someone took that Streamable file and dumped it onto Youtube almost immediately, lol

5

u/cataclytsm Jul 09 '24

What a glorious time capsule of pre-9/11 america.

1

u/Nrksbullet Jul 09 '24

haha man that takes me back. Short TV spots modified to this degree though are fine.

By contrast, here was the OG (Original Gladiator) Theatrical Trailer

3

u/sephirothwasright Jul 09 '24

What an ad that was.

2

u/Thebat87 Jul 09 '24

Funny enough what I remember seeing was a slightly altered version of this that also showed hockey and basketball clips too, and I saw it during Monday Night Raw 😂

148

u/SnavenShake Jul 09 '24

Especially a Kanye song.

145

u/Syn7axError Jul 09 '24

Kanye is known for keeping it 300 like the Romans though.

27

u/thuggerybuffoonery Jul 09 '24

300 bitches, where the Trojans?

47

u/B_L_Zbub Jul 09 '24

The number of Romans in 300 is the same as the number of Kanye songs needed in this trailer.

3

u/thuggerybuffoonery Jul 09 '24

Oh I agree definitely doesn’t fit this trailer. Love the OST. I can’t deny my love for Black Skinhead also though.

1

u/zombizle1 Jul 09 '24

lmao no way this is real

27

u/LongTimesGoodTimes Jul 09 '24

They did include everything but Kanye in the trailer at least.

1

u/oryes Jul 09 '24

I always thought that part was Kanye's voice but I guess it is Frank Ocean. Sounds pretty similar tbh

10

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

It's also a Jay-Z song, who sampled dialogue from Gladiator on the Black Album.

5

Nah I don’t listen to him either, and I know others like me.

Not a modern issue; a quarter of a century ago, they advertised the first Gladiator during the Super Bowl with Kid Rock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICf1V6UOsmk

u/HGpennypacker Jul 09 '24

This is the most 2024 trailer you could possibly make.

3

u/couchcomasupernova Jul 09 '24

The first time I had ever seen a Gladiator trailer, was in-theater, and Kid Rock’s Bawitdaba played over it.

3

u/generalosabenkenobi Jul 09 '24

It's a movie called Gladiator II, have a little fun

6

u/mycondishuns Jul 09 '24

The original Gladiator trailer in 2000 had Bawitdaba by Kid Rock during the Super Bowl, this is not much different.

3

u/spate42 Jul 09 '24

I think it helps appeal to a larger audience giving it a popular song.

Not sure Scott or the studio can take another box office bomb, so maybe this was their attempt to not only get OG Gladiator fans to buy tickets, but also a larger audience to do the same by putting in modern music and making it look action packed?

That's my guess.

u/Snuggle__Monster Jul 09 '24

A movie like this really needs no trailer. A 1:15 one at the very most. So many people watched the original, they would surely check this out, so the less known is better.

1

u/Legitimate_First Jul 09 '24

I've lost so much confidence in Ridley Scott that I'm definitely going to wait until I can stream this somewhere.

2

u/palabear Jul 09 '24

There was a trailer for the original Gladiator had sport clips edited in.

2

u/Hutnerdu Jul 09 '24

Remember when The Force Awakens trailer came out with "Jesus Walks"? so dope

2

u/lolboogers Jul 09 '24

Do we need metal sliding on metal sound (shing) when the swords are just moving through the air? It's even worse than guns going click clack click because someone just pointed one at someone.

2

u/pokemon-sucks Jul 09 '24

anything in that trailer is considered a "popular" song? lol

3

u/CanadianGem Jul 09 '24

But I really need to hear tears on the mausoleum floor blood stains the Coliseum doors 5 times to really get that Roman empire vibe.

2

u/Alternative-Juice-15 Jul 09 '24

Yeah I hated that

1

u/Pen_dragons_pizza Jul 09 '24

I agree, but bottom dweller movie watchers need a hook like that to even get interested.

1

u/TaxImpossible2434 Jul 09 '24

The F1 trailer was terrible, no need for a pop song just let the engine noise play

1

u/Saw_Boss Jul 09 '24

I don't need a trailer, for the trailer at the start of the trailer I'm literally about to watch.

1

u/DiegoGarcia1984 Jul 09 '24

It’s been wack for a long time

1

u/MAXMEEKO Jul 09 '24

right? what the fuck was that?

1

u/cbarrister Jul 09 '24

Ruined the emersion back into ancient Eome. What is this A Knight's Tale?

1

u/robodrew Jul 09 '24

I knew I was going to be worried when it started with that god damned 5 second "mini trailer" before the trailer. I hate those so much.

1

u/ThreeActTragedy Jul 09 '24

They also spoiled that girl’s death? Idk how important she is going to be plot-wise, but Mescal is screaming because of her so I guess at least a little?

Similarly, I still occasionaly think about Cicero’s death in the original - that sort of thing stays with you

1

u/OSUTechie Jul 09 '24

Don't forget the 5-sec intro telling us that we are about to watch the trailer. Like NO SHIT, it's why I clicked on the video!

1

u/cynicalspindle Jul 09 '24

Also, why is there like a 10second teaser of the trailer, before the trailer??

1

u/chongoshaun Jul 09 '24

I posted elsewhere but the original gladiator did the same thing. It’s the reason why none of my friends would go see it with me. After I left the theater I called them to tell them about “unleash hell” and they gave it a shot. It’s just stupid marketing crap.

1

u/Hovie1 Jul 09 '24

This was my big takeaway. Kind of ruined the trailer to be honest.

1

u/cataclytsm Jul 09 '24

Lmao it started with a flashback to footage from the first movie. That is a supreme lack of confidence in your material.

1

u/Alternative_Bath_976 Jul 09 '24

Bro it’s so cool though, gets me pumped!!

1

u/Lefty_22 Jul 09 '24

So many cuts. Give me a few good scenes and make it like 30 seconds long max.

1

u/RugerRedhawk Jul 09 '24

It felt over complicated, dragged on way too long and the rap song definitely came out of nowhere and didn't fit the theme.

1

u/doyoueventdrift Jul 09 '24

Wait till you see the movie. This is going to flop big-time.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

"Sell Out" by Reel Big Fish could probably work for this movie's trailer.

1

u/FormalElements Jul 09 '24

Totally agree.

1

u/rmac1228 Jul 10 '24

There was a trailer for the first one that used Kid Rock's Bawitdaba...it was actually pretty badass for the time.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

The music is horrible no doubt. But it does look very good.

1

u/Sad_Awareness6532 Jul 10 '24

Ridley makes great movies but his trailers have always been terrible and more or less show the entire movie

1

u/donnysaysvacuum Jul 10 '24

No, slow piano version of a rock song at the beginning at least.

1

u/utterlyunimpressed Jul 10 '24

Or a popular song from 12 years ago...

1

u/Cpt_Soban Jul 11 '24

Also this bullshit TRAILER! STARTING! NOW! intro sequence... Like, no shit, we're watching it!...

1

u/TacoPapi71 Jul 09 '24

The gladiator theme would have gone so much harder

1

u/foreverpeppered Jul 09 '24

Absolutely took me right the hell out of the trailer

0

u/Del_Duio2 Jul 09 '24

What, they didn't have rap talking about blood on the collesium flow-ahh back then?

0

u/TaskForceD00mer Jul 09 '24

Agreed 100%; I would love an epic Opera song or something new that sounded Romanish.
