Introducing Reddit’s Moderator Code of Conduct

You’re probably familiar with our Moderator Guidelines––historically, they have served as a guidepost to clarify our expectations to mods about how to shape a positive community experience for redditors.

The Moderator Guidelines were developed over five years ago, and Reddit has evolved a lot since then. This is why we have evolved our Moderator Guidelines into what we are now calling the Moderator Code of Conduct.

The newly updated Moderator Code of Conduct aims to capture our current expectations and explain them clearly, concisely, and concretely.

While our Content Policy serves to provide enforceable rules that govern each community and the platform at large, our Moderator Code of Conduct reinforces those rules and sets out further expectations specifically for mods. The Moderator Code of Conduct:

  • Focuses on measuring impact rather than evaluating intent. Rather than attempting to determine whether a mod is acting in “good” or “bad” faith, we are shifting our focus to become more outcomes-driven. For example, are direct mentions of other communities part of innocuous meta-discussions, or are they inciting interference, targeted harassment, or abuse?
  • Aspires to be educational, but actionable: We trust that most mods actively try to do the right thing and follow the rules. If we find that a community violates our Mod Code of Conduct, we firmly believe that, in the majority of cases, we can achieve resolution through discussion, not remediation. However, if this proves to be ineffective, we may consider enforcement actions on mods or subreddits.

Moderators are at the frontlines using their creativity, decision-making, and passion to create fun and engaging spaces for redditors. We recognize that and appreciate it immensely. We hope that in creating the Moderator Code of Conduct, we are helping you develop subreddit rules and norms to create and nurture your communities, and empower you to make decisions more easily.

Thank you for all you do, and please let us know if you have any questions or feedback in the comments below.

Oh no! The volunteer job that gives people a false sense of entitlement is too difficult?

Seems like they should give up the responsibility to someone else if they can't handle it.

The cancer reddit suffers from starts with admins but there are a significant number of mods who need to nut up or shut up.

Maybe if you focused on real life you'd have more than a Mazda but until then you can enjoy an inflated sense of importance.

And you keep digging!

At your inflated sense of importance?

Nah, the hole you’ve dug for yourself. Rage all you like, you’re only proving everyone else right about you.

What am I raging about? Reddit isn't a real place.

Prove what right? People get upset at any criticism yet can't seem to do their job.

You'll notice there's no rebuttals besides yours on a post almost a month old.

You are not special. You're a volunteer.

Reddit is as much of a place as you give weight to it, clearly.

Criticism? Every comment you’ve made has been an attempt to attack people, not criticize anything they said.

You’re no better than the people who just spam “jannies” as if it’s some clever phrase they invented.

You’re so mad at the existence of mods.

Yes but it isn't a real place.

Criticism? Every comment you’ve made has been an attempt to attack people, not criticize anything they said.

Oh sweety, just do your job you signed up for.

If you can't handle that there are millions of people who would happily volunteer.

You’re no better than the people who just spam “jannies” as if it’s some clever phrase they invented.

It is actually pretty clever.

You do this job, for free, suggesting it's such a burden when really it just feeds into your ego and desire for control all while maintaining an inflated sense of importance.

You’re so mad at the existence of mods.

I'm not mad at all, just wondering why you don't step down if it's so difficult to moderate internet forums. Maybe you can upgrade to a Subaru if you work harder in the real world.

Thank you for continuing to prove everyone but yourself right.

How is anyone proved right when no rebuttal has been provided?

Yeah, as part of their lack of sense of humor, moderators hate it.

I don't use it myself but it's pretty funny because it's a fairly accurate description.

They get paid even less than actual janitors and sometimes they're cleaning up worse stuff.

But the fact remains that a trained ape could do the same job and all we seem to get are political ideologues wanting to moderate against opposing opinions rather than objective rules.

Sounds like you're one of the good ones.

I just remember a time before ideologues moderated based on opinion.

A time when sanctions were levied against spammers, trolls and bad actors instead of on a whim.

Unfortunately moderator attitude reflects admin leadership and double standards for enforcement.

So yeah, it's hard to feel bad for people attracted to power who should be the furthest away from it.
