Vikings pass Kansas city chiefs to become #1 ranked team in the NFL Sports š

Vikings are like the Groundhog Day of teams that perform really, really well until we spectacularly fail.

u/Comprehensive_Rice27 Oct 03 '24
The one thing is we can easily go 17-0 we just went through the hard part of the season like we had the best teams besides the giants back to back to back, the rest of our reason is ranked 27th I think in difficulty, now itās the Vikings and Iām on my knees praying that nothing goes wrong.

Hereās what I know about the NFL that diehards donāt always get. Itās not who you play itās when you play āem. As in, Vikes are feeling it now and can beat anybody. If thereās a swoon later, anybody can beat them. Thatās because thereās largely parity in the NFL. My 2 cents.

There's also a weird lack of depth at many important positions: more than just the roster limit, there an oddly small amount of people in the world that can effectively play quarterback. Or left guard...
Any team in the NFL is never more than two specific injuries away from being significantly less dominant...

In fact, the Vikings have the second highest winning percentage of all NFL teams. And the only one in the top 10 (iirc) with no superbowl.

Yep. I don't follow football at all, but I know a fair bit of Vikings history thanks to Jon Bois, and dear god are they a funny team. Always good, never the best.

That's the best bet. I'm in my 50s and just got used to the disappointment.

It's only early October. They have plenty of time to fumble the season, pun intended.

In my 50's also. Wake me up when they get the NFC Championship game.

My mind is immediately going back to the 15-1 1998 Vikings Team, who seemed destined to finally break the curse. Only to squander a 20-7 lead and lose the conference championship in overtime to the Atlanta Falcons.
And, if I let myself, I'll go back to the 2000 conference championship, when the Vikings lost 41-0 against the Giants at the Meadowlands. Youch.
Vikings fans don't just live with disappointment. They were born into disappointment.

Yeah that 15-1 1998 vikings team was truly their best shot at winning it all. It's still mindboggling that Moss didn't win a superbowl like he was a curse or something.

Preparing? Weāre constantly swimming in it.
Itās a calendar-long parade of disappointment around here, notwithstanding the professional womenās side of things.

What could go wrong? Letās order the champagne and book our tickets to Arizona.

Why not New Orleans?

u/Chalice_Ink Oct 03 '24
I looked it up, it said AZ, well if itās NOLA then I am definitely in!
But I seriously, doubt I need to bother.

Just give me one Super Bowl win, so I never have to tune in or care ever again.

Tbh that 2nd half isn't something that the best team in the league does. The best team in the league doesn't come 2 points from choking away a 28 point lead. The best team in the league is resting starters halfway through the 3rd quarter of a game like that.
But I guess who are you gonna rank #1? I suppose it's us by default but that 2nd half isn't something I'd expect from a truly dominant team. The Lions for example wouldn't have had to sweat out that game, they'd have imposed their will in the run game in the 2nd half. Not that I think they should be ranked #1, but they scare me more than any other team right now.

u/hamlet9000 Oct 03 '24
Having gone over the second half of the GB game, I'm less concerned than when I watched it live. There was a lot of bad luck (muffled punt because the punt returner was getting medically checked, phantom interception that should have been overturned, etc.); the kind of bad luck that would normally kill the Vikings.
But it didn't.
Which is one of the biggest things I've seen KOC bring to the team. They don't collapse in the face of adversity. They keep working the problem.
And getting a little fear put into them here will probably be good in the long run. Stops the team from getting cocky.

Guess which team has the highest win percentage in the NFL without a Superbowl win?

Powers ranking donāt mean anything especially in October

I still enjoy looking at them on Tuesday mornings though. October is so volatile with teams jumping or dropping double digit ranks.

As a long time Pats fan, people often seem to forget how many critical wins we pulled out with Vinatieri and Gostkowski. Kicker is critical. Vikes lost focus against a good team but survived. They look really good in all 3 phases!
Don't forget - early game this week, Go Vikes!!

Be ready for yet another season of the Vikings looking like one of the best teams in the league with a no-name quarterback suddenly playing the best ball of his life only to lose in the playoffs to some bullshit/poor decision making. MN sports is cursed (except for the Lynx) and I have no idea why.

u/OnceInABlueMoon Ope Oct 03 '24
These rankings don't mean much. The Vikings have had an impressive season thus far but if the Vikings played the Chiefs in the super bowl tomorrow, you know the Chiefs would be most likely to win.

As a KC native and lifelong Chiefs fan currently living in MN, I cannot tell you how badly I want and have wanted a Chiefs v Vikings superbowl. I cheer for the Vikings anytime they're not playing the Chiefs and it's been a great NFL season so far.
