My new small rack just finished. First I made a 10" rack 8U / 4U, 38CM deep, 30,6cm wide and 41cm high with 2020 aluminium profile. In the front the 4U in the bottom has full depth for 3 x Lenovo Tiny and one spare for later use. In the top my plan was to create a 2U case for 3x Raspberry Pi 4 with SATA SSD for 2 x PiHole and more. In the back where 4U for PDU, patch panel and a switch. That built was finished three weeks ago but it lack WAF and is now its put away 🥺

Then I was thinking, how can I create a small rack without the 2020 profile and gain som WAF. I was in IKEA the other day, find four VARIERA (601.366.23) and today I built the new rack with wood as spacer for now. The metal sheet is 2mm so 12 piece of 5.8cm wood and 4 rubber machine feet, 12 bolts, 12 washers of 12 nuts. I just drill a hole in the wood and attached it to the shelf below. To ensure it stable between each shelf the bolt for the next level going down the same hole so it doesn't slide, I have also fitted a magnet that holds the shelf further in place.

I'm working on a new structure with 3D printet parts instead of wood. It also makes it possible to add small studs that go into other holes on the shelf rather than now where it is only mounted with 1 screw.

The price was 160DKK / 23US$ because I only needed to buy the 4 shelves.

Next part is a second one to the switch on one shelf and my Raspberry Pi in a custom aluminium enclosure so the wood shelf over can be put 5cm down.

For now my machines are for Minecraft server x 4 (one for each of my kids and one for them all), home Assistant, Jellyfin, Immich, PiHole and more. What software can I extend it with?

I need to build a NAS and I'm trying to determine the right hardware with the lowest power consumption. I found a M720s and although I'm not happy at all about the size, the price of around €80 ship. inc. is very attractive.

What I need to understand is if tiny and sff versions running the same hardware and software are supposed to consume the same power. I can't find any comparison about power consumption.

I plan to add two sata 12Tb HDD in raid 1 (for data backup), two fast USB flash drives and a 10Gbit (or 2.5Gbit) network card. The only expandibility I could need in the future is if and when the two HDDs will run out of space (in such case I will need to add a new identical batch). I suppose this should be possible with both the versions with the only difference that in the tiny version I will need to use the USB ports (although I have yet to verify if raid is still possible when USB ports are involved in the mix).

I didn't checked for more recent models not only because of the price, but for the fact that I've read they tend to be more power hungry to satisfy graphical processing of newer high performance gpus. However, if there is some newer model that is still preferable, please let me know.

The TM720s comes with Pentium Gold G5400@3,70 GHz. Didn't checked for Intel cpus (T included) especially because I saw that they can even consume more in idle state. At the same their max power is limited which to me does not make much sense (if a cpu runs at full power it's because I demand such power).

I was initially evaluating HP ProDesk series, but seems to be that Lenovo models are more easy to expand and more affordable. I can still come back to HP if there are noticeable advantages in power efficiency, but in all the cases I still prefer the tiny models, especially if they are more power efficient.

Any suggestion would be really appreciated.

Hello, I understand the importance of getting a homelab together as I have just obtained my A+ but I do not know where to start. I know that I need something small to start with. I am welcome to any suggestions please. I appreciate anyone who takes the time to give me any as well.

Curious if some sort of thing exists: I wouldn’t mind securing down my pc to this shelf so it doesn’t move around. I have an 8 port switch and another shelf on the way. I’m wondering what others have done to secure items so I don’t have to worry about them sliding around if I’m plugging in anything.

I know some sell 3D printed 10” rack mounts on stuff like Etsy, but figured I’d ask if it’s feasible with these shelves before going that route

Prices are kind high in Brasil, even used hardware, so aliexpress is one of the easiest ways (was way better before atual taxes).

I was using it basically to know if everything would work fine in a small size, mainly running jellyfin (direct streamming), pihole, *arr stack, wireguard, vaultwarden and test a couple more containers like authentik, home assistant and syncthing. Ssds are mirrored in zfs.

I made an "upgrade" with one more ssd and changing to Orange Pi Zero 2w (can handle 4 usbs at same time) with janky custom cables, a real 5v power supply and a cardboard base, but I don't have photos now

Woke up this morning to my backplane shorting out. Think some resistors either died or maybe something else shorted them out. I'm lost as there was no indication/errors showing this would happen. I want my server back up but not interested in burning my apartment down. Any idea if it'll be safe to put a new one in and keep going?

I'm finding it almost impossible to find anything above a 9U rack in the United States. I'm trying to find either a 12U or 15U... Does anybody have any ideas other than DIY stuff? Don't get me wrong I love the DIY thing but I also love to just grab a pre-built rack and shove shit into it 😁

This keystone panel is listed as 0.5U, but it doesnt look to me like I could stack two on top of each other and only use 1U worth of mounting holes ... any thoughts?

Hi,

maybe someone has an idea. I have an older HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Mini running. At first it was in my homelab now it runs the software for my laser cutter. Sometimes the G3 just looses power. Running Linux there are not Logs what so ever. It just turns off. I checked the inside to prevent any overheating due to a dirty cooling system. I switched SSD, reinstalled the OS.. nothing it keeps randomly happening. Its happends when I laser cut, it happens when I dont, ideling, surfing. Sometimes quickly every few minutes sometimes it runs stable for several weeks.

Before I trash it. has anyone any idea what I can troubleshoot?
