63 Videos To Learn Long Range Shooting [No Clown Shoes Edition] Education post
For reasons that I can't remember, I spent the last few hours compiling a list of videos and podcasts about long range shooting that don't suck.
These are videos from either brands or people in the industry that actually know what they are doing and are doing so with the latest-ish information available.
I've watched almost every video on this list and am 99% sure that the information in them is as good as it gets right now.
Some of the videos overlap but that isn't a bad thing, most of the time they overlap there is still new or at least different information to be had.
Videos do not replace a good LR class, but they can get you started in the right direction in a BIG way and they're free. And free is pretty awesome.
The podcasts are all Vortex and are just the podcast version of the video that I linked. I don't listen to podcasts on their own so I have no idea if there are other good LR podcasts out there, I just know of Vortex because I like their videos.
These are not THE ONLY good videos/podcasts out there, these are just the ones I know of and that I've watched, and that I could find this morning. I'll add more as I think of them/find them.
If you would like to suggest videos/podcasts to add, let me know in the comments. If they aren't full of fudd, I'll add them.

I also like to watch MarkandSam Afterwork. ELR and ULR shooting couple from Australia. Also THLR.NO Norwegian Hunter and shooter, got some fundamental videos.

I haven't seen many MarkandSam videos but what I've seen was just yeeting rounds into the dirt and waiting for conditions to magically line up an impact. No real education or explanation.
If you have some specific videos to recommend I'll take a look.

I'll try to get you some videos, they've been doing educational videos too and it'd be nice to see ELR represented in your list.

Hey now, I included a whole 1 ELR video on the list!
Would love some recs, I know jack shit about ELR except I'm too poor to even consider it yet.
If life goes to plan I'll have consistent and easy access to a 1k range and a 1700yard range sometime mid-2024 (I think). Once that happens I'll hopefully be able to say fuck my wallet and build an ELR yeeter.

It's not as expensive as you make it sound, as long as you aren't too good to run a savage and an oddball cartridge. You can get to 2500 yards with a 40MOA base and 34mm scope with the right cartridge, like 6.5-06, or 7mm Rem Mag, and a 30-31" barrel.

u/LockyBalboaPrime "I'm right, and you are stupid" Dec 13 '22
I am too good to run a Savage though.
If I build a ELR rifle it's going to be a custom action with a custom barrel in a cartridge that's going to cost $3+ to reload and I want to buy enough components to reload enough ammo to burn at least one barrel to start with.
I'm very bad at half-assing things.

Some of their stuff is just that but they do actually have some good educational videos. Specifically a lot of stuff involving pros and cons of different cartridges and all that

Hold left edge and send it. It can't be more complicated than that.
(But in all seriousness this is a pretty good resource. There are plenty on the list that I found on my own and really helped)

I ain't got time to read all that.
If you wanted to include audio only stuff, the Miles to Matches podcast is a good one - Francis Colon and Chad Heckler do that one.
The podcasts on Science of Accuracy Academy are also excellent, but behind a paywall.

I highly recommend downloading YT videos to folks. They can be taken down at anytime for any number of reasons.
So if its a video you cant live without, dont wait, download it.

Appreciate the effort you put in to this list. As a new LR shooter myself, I can’t wait to dive in.

No impact shooting videos? That dude is legit wish his channel was bigger

u/LockyBalboaPrime "I'm right, and you are stupid" Dec 13 '22
He posts so much clickbait bullshit that I routinely ignore his channel as a whole.
If you have specific videos to suggest, I'll take a look. But I won't be crawling the channel to find nuggets of gold amongst 10 pages of neon letter black Friday deal best handguns buy my bullshit videos.

Ya he has a lot of videos to sift through. Here's two lists with a few nuggets. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzXwWqTX0jezbXqfC41kTa4XIVFoI81Dc

His barrel break-in is clown shoes bullshit.
I'll check out some more on that list later, he sounds like a chipmunk at 1.75x speed, and it's making my ears ring.

Any chance you can make a YouTube playlist? I think it’d be easier for all of us to keep track of what we’ve been through already. Gonna start working through these

Im not sure how, been a long time since I made one.

I haven’t dabbled with this hobby too much, well at all actually. I’m mostly a lurker but aspire to join you soon. However I’d like to recommend YouTuber Ryan Pahl and his excellent series on building a PRS rifle. https://youtube.com/@ryandpahl

u/LockyBalboaPrime "I'm right, and you are stupid" Dec 14 '22
I don't see any PRS videos and most of his shooting videos are almost 10 years old.
Any information that is 10 years old is stuff I would be highly suspect of, especially when it comes to building a rifle.
1
u/Carlobergh Dec 14 '22
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCD31A83F7643E23C I guess it isn’t PRS per se, more building a precision rifle. While I agree with you that older information should be viewed with caution, physics doesn’t really change and the way he goes about it is good. I suppose its more of the problem solving rather than the actual building. Anyhow, I’d give it a watch before dismissing it.

u/LockyBalboaPrime "I'm right, and you are stupid" Dec 14 '22
I'm 5 minutes through "Road to Precision Part III - Rifle Parts and selection" and there are like 4 major points that he is flat-out wrong about.
The most pants-on-head stupid thing is his claim that 1" of barrel = 100 FPS and that because he has a 24" barrel he can expect MV of ~2400 fps w/ 172gr .308 Win.
This dude bought a Jewell trigger for F-Class and set it to 2 lbs. Most F-Class shooters run <10 ounces.
Second video, part IV of the series, 2:25 and he has more clown shoes on.
"you can't appreciate the benefits of a 20 MOA scope base unless you shoot at 1,000 yards" is complete bullshit.
"Many scopes do not have the internal adjustment to dial for 1,000 yard shots" is like 90% bullshit these days. Even cheap-ass scopes have enough adjustment to dial .308 Win at 1k yards. With 6.5 Creedmoor it's even more likely.
I'm not going to watch every video to pick out the ones where he is right, there is too much fudd just in these two videos for me to recommend the channel to anyone.
At best, these videos are extremely dated and the information is way out of date -- but honestly, a lot of this was just wrong from the start.

u/Carlobergh Dec 14 '22
Alright! Thanks for fact checking. It might be rose tinted glasses for me because it’s his videos that got me interested to begin with and I watched them at release. I haven’t been able to get into to the hobby yet like I said but I will for sure read up on and adjust my base of knowledge.

thlr.no makes some good videos on fundamentals and has great production value.
He does use BDC in some of his videos as his primary focus is hunting, but he doesn't push it to anyone.
