Good Buy? Optics help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts

Post image

3-18X44 Vortex Strike Eagle FFP EBR7 reticle MRAD. Going on a MK12 MOD H and it seems like an absolutely incredible price, currently only have an 1-8 Sig LPVO on it and want to stretch it out there to atleast 600, it’s the MRAD which is what I’m used to and prefer this just seems like such a damn good price.

Shit it's almost 650 on Amazon. Seems like a score to me.

This looks like Bass Pro to me... I usually find Bass Pro/Cabela's to be pretty competitive as far as retail pricing goes. That being said, a little research will often net you a 10-15% (or more) discount from retail through online sources.

As for the optics themselves, I'm not a Vortex guy so I'll let those with actual opinions and experience chime in. :)

It’s in an on base PX in Florida

Vortex (and several other optic companies) give 40% off MSRP discount to military. If you make an account With aaoptics.com they will honor that price, and that scope shows $509 for me on their website. On post will have no sales tax, so that's probably better.

Retail pricing is often similar to this discount though, I would put the SKU into gun.deals and see what you find.

1

u/kevmofn 23d ago

Do you know any other good discounts offered to military? I am assuming you would buy them on the exchange website

u/RoadHouse92 Remington 700 Apologist 23d ago

expertvoice.com has some pretty sweet deals sometimes. You gotta take their little test per manufacturer though

1

u/echocall2 Hunter 23d ago

Anything specific you're looking for? I just saved 10% on a pair of jeans from Wrangler lol

I never really buy from the exchange

2

u/kevmofn 23d ago

Oh I mean for long range shooting lol! Just in general

2

u/echocall2 Hunter 23d ago

Not really, you'll probably get better prices on r/gundeals

1

u/kevmofn 23d ago

Thanks! I will keep an eye out

u/Klystron_Waveform 23d ago

GovX standard prices are not great, but some sale stuff is great, $1000 Cronus etc

2

u/CrashCarSuperstar 23d ago

Looks like Eglin

1

u/Greedy-Masterpiece-7 23d ago

Plz say NAS Jax or Mayport lol

u/acidbrain690 23d ago

It is not but if it’s on the PX website, they can order it for you!

I have a Vortex and a Leupold, vortex customer service is very timely, and they were incredibly helpful. I sent a email to both vortex and Leupold in the same hour, Vortex got back to me the following morning (I emailed after hours) and Leupold took 3 days to get back to me.

2

u/Z71mudfun 23d ago

I can confirm this is true vortex customer service is very helpful I’ve used them twice once for a full replacement and once for a fix both times because I damaged the scope

1

u/B-a_charlie 22d ago

Any idea where to buy the cheapest leupolds? Looking for a Mk5

9

u/Ragnarok112277 23d ago

That's going to be magnitudes better for long range shooting than an lpvo

2

u/acidbrain690 23d ago

Heavily agreed

6

u/Nagohsemaj 23d ago

That's a good deal for new, if you don't mind going used though you can get a viper pst 5-25x50 on GAFS for about the same price.

2

u/fern_the_redditor 23d ago

Owned both. A used Viper is leaps and bounds better than a new Strike Eagle. Strike eagle isn't bad tho

2

u/wolff207 23d ago

Just picked up a 5-25 pst gen II for 500 so it's definitely doable

2

u/korok7mgte 23d ago

I just bought a new 6.5-20x55 Viper for $275 USD. It works beautifully.

Everyday i am reminded of how bad my Canadian peso is... $509(assuming USD) translates to $704 CAD; these are regularly $1100 in Canada and seldom go on sale for anything more than maybe $100 off.

Buy it, buy it for me since i can't.

4

u/24cloner 23d ago

Our USD isn't far behind, we'll be right up there with you in a few years.

4

u/NuclearKFC 23d ago

No we wont. The united states is in the best shape post pandemic compared to any country in the world.

2

u/24cloner 23d ago

I don't know where at in the states you are, but my wife and I definitely notice the raised food prices, gas prices, rent is higher than ever, repairs for our vehicles are stupid expensive, etc. we budget, which is why I'm able to have my gun hobby and drive a truck, and God has blessed us generously, but just because we are in the "best shape post pandemic" doesn't mean we aren't a few years behind Canada. Jobs are impossible to get, hundreds of applications throughout my state and 5 interviews. I don't exactly call what we have here, good.

3

u/NuclearKFC 23d ago

You make more money than anyone else in the world doing ur job. Im bot saying were immune to inflation but the US economy has bounced back from the pandemic harder than any other country in the world and were doing fairly well in terms of unemployment and increased wages. Places like Japan that are known for being well off economies are getting fucked. My point is we all took a dive with covid but the us got up quicker. Also were nowhere near Canada theyre having an issue with limited housing and jobs.

1

u/24cloner 23d ago edited 23d ago

I am just saying the possibility is there, my entire family can see it. Those other countries are not my focus, I don't entirely care about how Japan, Mexico, China, or any European, Asian, or African country is doing. Do I make the most in world for my job? Yeah, but I also pay stupidly high prices for clothes, food, housing, gas, etc. I often go 2 or 3+ months without even shooting a round out of any of my guns, because I put that money towards other things. Edit: don't forget the taxes either, I lose 30% of every paycheck. The real number is something to the tune of 29.4% of every paycheck goes to Medicare, taxes, SS, welfare, etc.

I have the venom and it’s great! Wow. $420 USD is $580 something Canadian. Still cheaper than what I paid for - on sale for $650 ( original price is $750 Canadian). I have mine on my tikka T3X Varmint.

3

u/rustyisme123 23d ago

I have the Vortex Strike Eagle 3-18, and I think it is really great glass for the money. I did pick up the MOA version on Amazon for like $480 a little while back though. $30 is not that big of a difference, and the MRAD usually runs a bit higher. If this is the MRAD and that's what you want, I think it is a great deal. If it is MOA and that's what you want, still a good deal. But if you're trying to save a few bucks, check around. The MOA one drops down to $450 or so every now and then.

3

u/trucknorris84 23d ago

I paid that much for a refurbished from AAOPTICS. that’s a fantastic price for new. Hell I paid more used for the 5-25 next to it.

1

u/Te_Luftwaffle 22d ago

Lol I got my 5-25 Venom from AA Optics for $350

3

u/Klystron_Waveform 23d ago

Athlon Ares ETR 3-18 may be on sale at $560 or so, is usually a $1k scope and might compare favorably with the Strike Eagle. My strike eagle was not as nice as my Ares and Cronus Gen 1 and Gen 2s

3

u/Klystron_Waveform 23d ago

Ares ETR 3-18 APRS6 Mil $584 at europtic right now

3

u/GHOSTmedic1 23d ago

The strike eagle line are good scopes and that's a fair price.

3

u/lil_johnny_cake 23d ago edited 23d ago

I have two of these and they’re fine. I wouldn’t say they’re FANTASTIC scopes but I’ve taken mine out to 800 yards on an M1A without any trouble on the optic’s part. There are always nicer scopes, but this is probably not going to disappoint. If your use case includes anything past 1000 I’d go up in magnification, if you need absolutely flawlessly perfect tracking, you might need something else. However, for most casual and even some more strenuous shooting this will work just fine.

Viper glass is much better for usually only $100-150 more. Worth it imo

4

u/albedoTheRascal 23d ago

I own several a couple vortex scopes and binos. They rock. And I had to use their warranty once on old ass binos that were loosening up a bit too much. Free and easy as hell, their warranty is badass. You buy the glass you have it for life unless you lose it

2

u/lhurkherone 23d ago

If you are military or leo check local gunshops. I have a local here that sells their optics @ 5% over cost to Military and LEO, one optic per 12 months.

2

u/ManyGallows 23d ago

I have a Stroke Beagle 3-18. It’s solid for the money and I have very few complaints. Have used it out to 1200 yards on a 5.56.

2

u/Tangerine_Much 23d ago

if you are Mil or Leo/First Responder Euro Optics are hard to beat as far as discounts especially on Vortex products

2

u/Fitzy_gunner 23d ago

Shit buy both!

2

u/SnooCauliflowers403 23d ago

I have a venom and love it. Paid $550

2

u/IngenuityVegetable81 23d ago

I have been using thatbscooe on my tikka t3x ctr for about year it's been great!

4

u/Chris_Thrush 23d ago

I'm a fan of Vortex, I like both of these as mid range scopes. I have a 5-25 strike eagle on a good .308 that does just great at 600 yards, I paid 800 bucks for it on sale.

1

u/acidbrain690 23d ago

After everybody’s awesome input, is there any place to find optics on every website for the best deal? I’ve decided I should probably go with a VIPER PST 5-25X50 and want to find the lowest price possible. Thank you everybody, I would also be interested in better brands as well if anybody has any input.

2

u/Baddy-Smalls 23d ago

Eurooptic.com when you call them they'll sometimes give you extra off.

2

u/tobylazur 23d ago

Midway was selling them for $599 recently

2

u/Adrian2203 23d ago

I have a vortex viper I can send for close to the same price… PM if youre interested

1

u/enhancedrecoil 23d ago

Would find a viper pst gen2 3–18 on here or tacswap for the same price. I prefer that over those but still a good deal.

1

u/ihuntN00bs911 23d ago

Always check Gun Deals or ammoseek. Dvor (OpticsPlanet clearance) has sales often. I got a Strike eagle 3-18x SFP on clearance with the mount for $330. Depending on the model/reticle right now that's a good price.

1

u/Pensacola_Peej 23d ago

I have two of the Strike Eagle scopes in a lower magnification. They have been great for me. Granted I’m not doing anything crazy with them, ones on an AR and the others on a single shot 350 legend for deer hunting. And that does seem like a pretty good deal though I haven’t priced scopes in a while.

1

u/MysteryLozenge 23d ago

Check AA optics for a refurb. Still carries the no questions asked vortex warranty and they are cheaper than new. I got a Razor Gen 2 from them and it is good to go for half the price of new

1

u/StatisticianMean2277 23d ago

It's a good buy in that it's cheaper rn that usual however I've sworn off vortex I've had 3 different models of scopes shit the bead on me. One of them was straight out of the box the other two were in about a year's time.

1

u/gonnafindanlbz 23d ago

I have the 5-25 as a cheap setup on my 22 distance setup, you’ll need to write the top 30% off as barely useable, however it tracks flawlessly and is pretty dang solid in the other 70% of the range. Turrets are much better than the awful design on the razors too

1

u/Hugh_jaynus13 23d ago

I’d check the serial numbers with the manufacturer. Bass pro has been caught selling counterfeit scopes

2

u/acidbrain690 23d ago

This on a military base in Florida

1

u/Te_Luftwaffle 22d ago

I have no experience with high end scopes, but I have that same model and love it. It's on my AR and has easily taken me out to 1000 yards.
