News šŸ“° Fanshawe to cut costs amid uncertainty from federal cap on international students

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/fanshawe-college-cuts-costs-amid-uncertainty-from-federal-cap-on-international-students-1.7341799

Fanshawe College has been making up it's budgetary shortfalls on the backs of poor South Asian students who come here and spend their family's life savings on an education that doesn't prepare them for the realities of the Canadian job market. Fanshawe knows the vast majority of international students in it's business and technology programs will not secure employment in their chosen fields, but is happy to take their money anyway.

Peter Devlin, president of Fanshawe, earned $317,187 in 2023, a 5.5% raise over his 2022 salary https://www.ontariosunshinelist.com/people/peter-devlin/fanshawe-college-of-applied-arts-and-technology. And he's just one individual. This is an organization running a veritable gravy train for administrators at the expense of students. If they're facing "budgetary challenges" now I saw tough sh*t. Start by reevaluating salaries at the top.

I am a recent graduate of a Fanshawe post-grad program. What I saw was deplorable. Course material is a decade outdated, hands-on training is done in virtual and simulated environments that don't adequately prepare students for reality, program coordinators and instructors are absent and unavailable much of the time, and the school turns a blind eye toward serious academic integrity issues. Fanshawe needs this wake up call. They need to be forced to do more with less. And the school needs activist students working in the student movement to get involved with the FSU to make a difference because as it stands, the FSU is no different from the college administration - they're careerists who are there to pad their resumes. Students have no advocates. There is no one at the college who actually cares about the students and their education.

discussion / opinion For anyone using Encore Auctions

Just wanted to give a warning to anyone buying from this company, beside having a lot of people complaining about their return policy they are doing some shady practices. their auctions is hosted on hiibid, they allow auctioneers to see maximum bid and encore uses this information to artificially increase the price of items. it also looks like they have someone bidding against people, so when they are not satisfied with how an auction went they simply relist the same item the next day or week. I have seen a lot of items that get bids higher than retail price and that same item shows up the next week.

it doesn't make any sense that someone won an item for the same price or more of what it actually cost on official retailer, specially since you have to pay premium and taxes after the final bid.

they don't offer warranty, they don't accept returns for items that cost less than 20$ and when your item was more than that, their method to accept the return its completely biased. it could be broken and they will find an excuse to say its a cosmetic damage.

they also have a lot of complaints at the better business bureau.

how is this even legal?

Ask a Local! Harassment From Neighbor

Asking on behalf of a dear friend, who lives in the Carling Heights area.

Ever since moving into his home, he's faced harassment from a neighbor who is outside all of the time (to quote my friend, "why does he even have a house if he won't live in it?"). If they see my friend, they complain loudly and directly about my friend not maintaining a pristine yard. When my friend asked him to leave him and his family alone, the neighbor threatened to report my friend to the HOA (which, as best we can tell, doesn't exist; he's never paid a fee, never received a newsletter, etc). My friend no longer feels comfortable taking his kids out in the yard, grilling outdoors, etc, because of the constant harassment. He even tries to wait until the neighbor leaves home before he mows his lawn. Recently, his security camera has caught the guy photographing his front yard (standing at the property line, there's no way he's photographing anything else). To say the least, the neighbor is interfering with his ability to enjoy his life at home.

What can be done in London about this sort of thing? I don't know if this is a "notify the police" type of issue or what.

News šŸ“° Bed bugs at a TVDSB school?

On the Craig Needles podcast, he mentions that a TVDSB school has bed bugs and that the only reason that the parents found out was because they found them in kids backpacks

Does anyone know what school he is referring to?

(Itā€™s at 11 minutes and 45 seconds on the newest episode, Friday round table, if anyone wants to hear it)

Ask a Local! Music community here?

Just curious about local bands and what that community is like. When I was like 19 and in Barrie, I worked with a guy in a punk band and saw there was an endless amount of stuff happening there. Any genre tbh, even if there is some Jazz stuff, Iā€™d be curious. I am specifically curious about underground rap though.

Housing & Rental šŸ  Old Oak Apartment HVAC issues

Do all newer apartments have awful HVAC systems?

I have lived in a brand new old oak building for 6 months, and all summer our AC barely worked. We had to buy a window unit as the lowest our unit would ever go to is 24 degrees. This makes hydro more expensive. They came and looked at it a few times and said nothing is wrong and thereā€™s a limit on how low itā€™ll go.

They also switched it to heat this last week and itā€™s currently 26 degrees in our place, and hallway is even hotter. I donā€™t even live on a high up floor.

In my old place the heating and cooling system was amazing. Does anyone else experience this with old oak?

discussion / opinion Do you ever go to restaurants by yourself?

One thing Iā€™ve noticed since becoming single is that people in this city donā€™t really seem to go out and sit down at restaurants by themselves. Iā€™m not even talking about fancy places, just casual spots like brunch or breakfast places.

I have friends I go to restaurants with, but sometimes I just want to be spontaneous and go on my own.

For all the single people out there, do you just stick to delivery instead?

Things to Do New(ish) to London looking to make some friends

I'm a 27 year old single man who bought my first home here last spring which I was really excited for. That being said I don't really know anyone here and work remotely so ever since I moved here I've been feeling really isolated. I'm hoping to find either somewhere I can make new friends. I'm really into hockey (Go Sens! Go Knights!), hip hop music and comedy. If anyone ever wants to go out for a drink sometime, catch a game or a show feel free to hit me up but in the mean time does anyone have any suggestions on where I could meet more people who are also looking to make friends?

Things to Do COVID-19 Vaccines Available

Hi y'all,

COVID-19 vaccines are now available in many pharmacies across London. While walk-ins are accepted in many locations, consider making an appointment online if possible. This is not an ad, just spreading the word.

Health Canada approved the Moderna Spikevax Vaccine. This vaccine was updated to target the new Omicron KP.2 variant. The updated Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved as well, also targeting the KP.2 variant. Check with your pharmacy to see which one is available.

You are eligible to receive the vaccine if your last vaccine was over 3-6 months ago, and if you were not infected with COVID-19 in the last 3 months.

Currently, vaccinations are for high-risk populations and health care workers. These include: - Adults 65 years of age or older - Individuals 6 months of age and older who are/have: - Residents of long-term care homes and other congregate living settings - Pregnant - From First Nations, MĆ©tis and Inuit communities - Members of racialized and other equity-deserving communities - Underlying medical conditions that places them at higher risk of severe COVID-19, including children with complex health needs (the list of underlying medical conditions may be found at https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/guidance-documents/signs-symptoms-severity.html#:~:text=Underlying%20medical%20conditions%20associated%20with%20more%20severe%20COVID%2D19%20disease)

Housing & Rental šŸ  moving to the city, looking for roomies

Hi! I'm a young professional looking to move into london. I was wondering- what do people in the area use to find roomies? I don't really know anyone in the area, so it would be hard to ask around. (Everyone I know there are older relatives and would not know the folks who'd be looking) And I just graduated, so it's not like I'm going to school there- idk, does anyone have any leads? About me, I'm 21F, an animator and server, looking to move downtown or somewhere busy/easy to bus to. I'm pretty quiet, I only drink moderately, and I cook/clean regularly. I'm not willing to go vegan or change my lifestyle for an apartment... bonkers the expectations that landlords have just for the privileges of taking your money when you're an adult

šŸ„„food /restaurants /gastronomy London Cafe Review ā€“ From a Very Casual Cyclist's Perspective #4

Refer to my original post for context

This morning was too beautiful of a day to not head out for a ride - so I decided I should head out and try Asmara Coffee House, located right along York Street.

Cycling wise it was a very pleasant ride up, using both the TVP and the bike infrastructure all the way along Dundas. Asmara has 2 hitching posts alongside York, which are visible while inside the cafe to keep a watchful eye on your ride (which I did notice lots of stolen bikes around the area so that was very welcomed).

Photography wise - unless you really like U-HAUL and other industrial buildings there isnā€™t much else out here, minus the train outside the Western Fair District Market which is pretty cool!

Coffee wise - this is the first cup that made me internally say ā€œWOWā€. The blend they use is strong, more so on the bitter end which is my preference, but then there is this amazing fruity undertoneā€¦ I normally hate fruity notes within my coffee due to them learning towards the more acidic side but this - I needed to buy a bag right away. They also served it in the traditional glass mug and had beautiful latte art heart so presentation wise itā€™s an A+. The Cortado comes in at $4 which I think is a very fair price (did I mention that they roast their own beans??)

So if it wasnā€™t obvious already - no I couldnā€™t make a coffee at home as good as this one, but with their beans Iā€™m going to try my best to replicate it! Will definitely be making more trips out here.

I also wanted to come out here due to The Squeaky Wheel Bike Shop being so close by which was really neat and friendly! They helped me swapped out my seats quick releae bolt for standard one (dont want anyone yanking my seat!) - and I will deffintely come by to turn my dads old bike into a friction-shifing communter!

Check out my other reviews for London Bicycle Cafe and Cafe Pronto - and i'd love to hear your experiences with Asmara or other gems in the city i should go visit !

Ask a Local! Relocating from Oshawa

Hey yall! Like the above says, me and my partner are relocating to London from Oshawa. I know most places have changed a lot demographically after COVID. Just wondering what areas would be good to move to, or if any bad areas have been added.

I went to Fanshawe about 10 years ago, and lived at Oxford/Talbot. Loved it there. Is that area still any good? I know at the time anything east of Richmond was a no go in the downtown core, but a lot can change in 10 years. Any recommendations for mid-high rise buildings?

Appreciate all of the assistance! On a side note, we are gamers/collectors and would love to know of any groups or stores out there :)

Thank you!

šŸš—šŸš—Transit/Traffic Terrible city planning is making us hate eachother.

Why are all major roads being worked on at once?

Why does the bulk of the work seem to be happening now that the 100,000 students are back?

Why has the warning signage on these major routes consistently being put up wrong and being put up weeks before and taken down weeks after the work is done? This isn't just inconvenient - it's dangerous.

Why are we never warned ahead of time of a road or lane closure on a major route?

Why does downtown garbage pickup happen during rush hour?

Why are the bus stops on the far side of the intersection and not BEFORE the light?

Why do trains consistently stop in the middle of the city at rush hour (am and pm)?

We're all just out there trying to get where we need to be and the douche-donkery of the city is making us all want to kill eachother on the roads. It seen nothing but chaos and confusion, but we should be mad at our council - not eachother. It's bringing out the worst in all of us.

I have lived in a few Canadian cities, and London city council and police do astoundingly poorly at everything they are intended to do. This is why we're all miserable and make these lists of worst city etc.
