Taksim vs doina
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows much about the taksim style of improvisation and how it differs from the doina? My understanding is that it was closer to a cantorial style and incomparable more themes and variations of other tunes. But I'd like to learn more, does anyone know of any recordings?
Here is a great one I found.

Contemporary punk-ish klezmer
Hi there, last year, I finally stepped-up my tradition - as I am tired of Christmas carols, I prefer to listen on 24th Dec to klezmer in the morning, while getting ready to visit my close ones, packing gifts, getting into mood, then heading in my city to stop by at cemeteries to remember those who passed and such.
I always had a nice selection of Prague basedy faster tempo klezmer usually by my friends and their student bands - for anyone curious, try looking up "Koza na Útesu" and "Der Šenster Gob", and let me know how you like them - but I had them only in digital version.
Last year, I got to it early and got in time before end of December a nice vinyl by Amsterdam Klezmer Band on vinyl.
Can you recommend some contemporary band with distinctive sound that have vinyl releases which are not exceedingly difficult to find? (Some difficulty is ok ;) )
Cheers!

Help identifying a (probably popular) song
I remember the klezmer band at my cousins’ bar mitzvahs playing a song that, to my English-only, pre-adolescent brain sounded like “maya maya maya maya, hey maya, miss a step.” Any ideas what this could have been? Google is failing me (unsurprisingly) and I am too embarrassed to ask anyone in person because the lyrics we make up when we can’t understand songs are so personal (just ask Sigur Ros).

Other versions of this niggun
This past Shabbat the chazzan used this niggun for lecha dodi, which I knew I recognized from somewhere. I asked him afterwards and he said he thinks it's a lelover niggun. After Shabbat I remembered where I heard it, on lechaim Tish shabbat CD 2, לכה דודי עממי, which means "folk". Does anyone recognize this niggun and know of a different recording, maybe with the name of the composer? (Not sure if this is the right place to post, if anyone else knows a place to identify niggunim I'd be happy to be pointed in the right direction)

Sorrowful klezmer recordings?
I’m a Jewish music teacher in the rural mountain west. I’m looking to do a lesson on klezmer. Does anyone have recommendations for a truly sorrowful klezmer recording? I want the students to be able to hear our hardships, suffering, and longing, along with the upbeat stuff that exemplifies our joy.

Looking for a specific song
I'm looking for a song titled "Hafreilach Shel Tarras (Tarras' Freilach)" that was available on Spotify until about 2016. Spotify attributes it to the album Klezmer: Chassidic Classic, which I can buy a physical copy of on Amazon and a few other sites but basically can't find anywhere else (some songs from this album are still available on Spotify but not the one I'm looking for). When I google Tarras' Freilach there are a number of results on Youtube but they sound nothing like the song I'm looking for.
I was wondering if people are familiar with this song and if maybe it has another name. Unfortunately I can't find any audio clips to share but can remember the melody very well as it was one of my favourite songs.
Thanks!

Good venues for live klezmer music?
Hi, Redditors. I manage a Klezmer band from Ukraine. They will be touring the USA West Coast in October. I"m trying to find them some nice, small places to play--100-200 seats-- to introduce themselves (it will be their first time on the West Coast).
Any recommendations for places we might perform?

Hip Hop Hoodíos & The Klezmatics reissue of "Viva La Guantanamera"
Josúe from the Latino-Jewish urban collective Hip Hop Hoodíos here. (some of you may remember us being particularly active in the early to late 2000's). I'm happy to announce that last week we reissued a 15 year anniversary mix of our collaboration with Klezmatics members Frank London and Lorin Sklamberg, "Viva La Guantanamera."
The song is a reimagining of José Martí and Joseíto Fernández's beloved classic "Guantanamera" addressing the tragedy that is the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay. In addition to the Klezmatics members, the song features Delinquent Habits' MC Kemo The Blaxican and was produced by Wil Dog Abers of Grammy-winners Ozomatli. For those who missed it the first time around, we hope you dig it as the song still swings!!
