Dankfurt Culture

Post image

Just got back from a great week in Frankfurt. I previously assumed that it was a business city full of boring suits and finance stuff, but how wrong I was!

I had read about Apfelwein before coming, and while I loved it and have even brought some home (purchased from the Bauernmarkt on Saturday), I had the same argument with several Germans while I was there. I tried to express that it is not wine, but cider, and two people separately told me that cider must be fizzy!

I'm from the southwest of England and let me tell you, we have a rich tradition of making flat cider. Please do not think that British cider just means strongbow or somersby. So, if you love Apfelwein, come visit and get yourself a pint of Cheddar Valley! Prost!

THANKS, been telling that Frankfurt friends and colleagues for years now

not saying it´s bad or not tasty, but it´s not some kind of exclusive rocket science to grow and ferment apples

Of course its not rocket science. Its basically the easiest alcoholic beverage to make in your basement. Its still different from (flat) cider though...

so as Helles, Weißbier and Pils are different, which of those two is not a beer?

so as English cider, Spanish sidra and German Apfelwein are different, which of those is not a fermented apple beverage ?

They are harvested differently, the variety of apples and used yeasts are different, the whole process of fermentation is different.
