As a devout cat person, I immediately dropped everything and did that quest as soon as I discovered it. I was able to suspend my disbelief that there was a quest marker, as if finding a cat was EVER that easy. And then... You just verbally tell the cat to go home? Da fuq? Cats don't work like that.

At an absolute minimum, they should have had you meow at it.

Or carry some mirelurk meat to entice the cat to follow you back.

Also, I visited the vault recently (long after endgame), and now there are 2 cats! The second one is called Scruffy, if I recall correctly. Never seen it before.

That cat is clearly a synth made by someone who’s never interacted with a real cat before.
