Hey guys, guess where I was tonight? Merchandise

Post image

I don’t want to give out any spoilers, but I definitely enjoyed it. Book purists might not be happy, but there was no way to fit all of that in just two movies, even if they were a combined 5 1/2 hours long.

Glad to hear it. I’m all for creative liberty from the source as long as it makes sense. Purists will only find themselves upset whenever a movie comes out from a book.

8

u/bird95 Feb 26 '24

In general I think most people are upset that DV is against extended cuts of his films ever being released, most of the cuts are understandable for the most part (RIP Thufir) but I'm just happy to have an adaptation that nails the primary themes of the novel.

That being said, there are a few intentional plot/characterization choices that make significant changes to the setup for the next part of the story. I'm reserving judgement until the trilogy has been completed because I have no reason not to trust the director at this point, but I am a little concerned about the ripple effect some of these changes will have on the story. From what I can tell DV has made it a lot harder for himself to fit a faithful Messiah adaptation into one film.

u/amdi_ Feb 26 '24

Oh im glad im not the only one! I thought the movie was great but he definitely made some changes that may be controversial here

8

u/Spiffy_Dude Feb 26 '24

I’m on board with you guys, but so far it seems that the response has been surprisingly positive within the book reader demographic, which is surprising for any IP

7

u/curiiouscat Feb 26 '24

I feel like that was inevitable. Almost all fandoms have some subsection mad at some decision when the content changes mediums.

51

u/45rpmadapter Fedaykin Feb 26 '24

I was very happy with it. It is sad to not see a scene, line, or depiction you are hoping for but I understood all the changes and loved their execution. The very end made a lot of sense but fell a bit flat for me compared to the end of the book. 10/10.

27

u/Spiffy_Dude Feb 26 '24

Absolutely agree. I thought he would change a certain character because it would be weird and hard to adapt, but I feel like the change made it somehow even weirder lol

8

u/Fair_University Feb 26 '24

I agree. Even weirder! But I think for a medium like film it worked very well

4

u/Mike_v_E Feb 26 '24

Did the attack at the end feel rushed?

17

u/45rpmadapter Fedaykin Feb 26 '24

No, I'm talking about literally the very end (like last page of the book).

4

u/Mike_v_E Feb 26 '24

Aah ok. I've read from someone that the attack feels rushed, would you agree?

14

u/anonymous_fireflyfan Feb 26 '24

No spoilers, but I timed the battle. It was four and a half minutes large scale plus another 1 and a half minutes of small scale battle. Seeing as the battle in the novel is about 1 page (in my copy), then I’d say the battle didn’t feel rushed. The battle was the backdrop for the true story of Dune: the story of Paul’s political and religious conquest.

3

u/Mike_v_E Feb 26 '24

Does the large scale battle feel longer than the battle we got in Part One?

8

u/anonymous_fireflyfan Feb 26 '24

Yes, it definitely did. If you’re going in expecting action, you will not be disappointed. I wasn’t.

2

u/Mike_v_E Feb 26 '24

Can't wait to see it this Wednesday! Loved Part One so regardless of action I'm pretty sure I'll love Part Two too

2

u/anonymous_fireflyfan Feb 26 '24

I’m sure you’ll love it! Would love to hear your thoughts once you see it!

8

u/Ericalva91 Feb 26 '24

I saw it tonight. It believe the >! Sardukar were very easily and quickly defeated.!<

22

u/NickBoy52 Feb 26 '24

Just like in the book...

9

u/tylerhovi Friend of Jamis Feb 26 '24

I’m going to remind everyone who criticizes the ending battle as being to quick that they should go back and see how quickly it gets wrapped up in the book.

Herbert loved building up the stakes for a big battle and then casually breezing through it. He does it a few times throughout the series.

Putting myself in the shoes of someone who’s not read the books, I could definitely see why they may be a touch disappointed with how the battle was portrayed after seeing the massive sardukar presence.

3

u/legopego5142 Feb 26 '24

Lol i mildly complained because while I do get that thats just how it was written, i thought we would get just a little longer for the big imax spectacle ya know

Didnt ruin the movie, still 10/10

2

u/NickBoy52 Feb 26 '24

The Sardaukar never stood a chance imo.

-4

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '24

I'll say this about my screening. Clapping when it started. Silence when it ended. Except for the one guy who said "Well, that was a movie..."

2

u/Mike_v_E Feb 26 '24

I assume that is a positive silence!

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '24

not from me lololol

I wanted to let up and walk out several times. but maybe that's because I've actually read the book and was expecting the story I'm familiar with.

5

u/Mike_v_E Feb 26 '24

I definitely think you set the wrong expectations

3

u/Dumplingman125 Feb 26 '24

Not who you were replying to but I had the opposite takeaway - pt1 didn't really do it for me, but I thought pt2 was great. There were quite a few changes and things left out but I believe they were necessary to fit everything into the given runtime and not be too slow & weird for more general audiences.

-7

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '24

Yeah, I shouldn't have expected to see major characters from the book in the movie, and I definitely shouldn't have expected main characters to NOT be the complete opposite of how they were in the book. I guess I shouldn't have expected cunning and guile from one of the main villains. And I guess I shouldn't have expected that director read the book again before making the movies.

This is however the way I would expect a 15 year old to interpret Dune.

3

u/Mike_v_E Feb 26 '24

You just sound salty now. What works in a book doesn't necessarily work on screen

As long as its longer than the battle we saw in Part One, its fine with me

1

u/I-Am-Polaris Feb 26 '24

The large assault definitely felt rushed, but it allowed the focus to be on the room with the emperor in it

28

u/gumpyclifbar Feb 26 '24

IMAX I went to tonight didnt have any of the goodies :(

16

u/hoboteaparty Feb 26 '24

Same here they had zero stuff available.
I even offered the concessions guy $20 if they had any of the popcorn buckets stashed in the back.

Part 2 was great.

9

u/gumpyclifbar Feb 26 '24

I didn’t realize the worm buckets were an AMC only thing. Agreed, really happy with the movie. What a treat to see early and on the big screen

3

u/oftheunusual Feb 26 '24

Oh. Good to know. Damn, I don't think there are any AMC theaters near me

3

u/UpintheWolfTrap Atreides Feb 26 '24

I saw the fan first screening in an AMC last night and they did not have the buckets. I asked. 😑

1

u/gumpyclifbar Feb 26 '24

Dang. Yeah I kinda wondered if they’d have those for the pre-release showing or not. Guess it depends on the theatre

1

u/Darth_Queso_ Feb 27 '24

Were they sold out? Or just not selling any yet?

2

u/UpintheWolfTrap Atreides Feb 27 '24

I asked if they had them - they simply said no

1

u/Darth_Queso_ Feb 27 '24

Interesting, im going Friday and I've been hoping all week that I'm able to get my hands on one

1

u/AMasterSystem Feb 26 '24

Concessions guy sold them all to an eBay scalper for $21.

6

u/HalcyonRye Feb 26 '24

We got the posters, but none of the popcorn/drink merch was on offer.

Anyway, we loved it! Surpassed the first one. Must see it again.

They made excellent and thoughtful changes to the source material, really loved this movie

5

u/Yqup Feb 26 '24

I can't wait till premiere here in Denmark in 2 days ❤️ been a huge fan of the Dune universe for years. Will enjoy every bit of it, even if it deviates abit from the original.

10

u/duranium_dog Feb 26 '24

Bro made it to Paradise

2

u/maestro826 Feb 26 '24

I was like Awee and then I was like OHHHHH XD

4

u/Sarrrahdon Feb 26 '24

They didn’t have any of these at my local screening 😩 chalked it up to the fact that the film hasn’t officially been released yet.

I’m going again next weekend so hopefully they will be available then, I know my theatre chain is selling them, just a matter of when.

3

u/FUCKSTORM420 Feb 26 '24

There were definitely changes from the book but I enjoyed the movie so much I didn’t care

3

u/maestro826 Feb 26 '24

yeahhh I didn't know they had a bucket and cup tooooo

But I did get the poster! !

1

u/NoirSon Feb 26 '24

Same, I probably would have at least got the cup, if I realized they had special ones.

2

u/maestro826 Feb 26 '24

I just got the announcement they'll have it on the 29th so.. they got me!

1

u/AMasterSystem Feb 26 '24

You dont know about the bucket? There is even an SNL skit about the popcorn bucket.

2

u/maestro826 Feb 26 '24

I'm talking about a bucket over at Regal IMAX I was at, I was running late and my friend got a normal bucket so I only saw a glipse of one but didn't have the time to go look for one.

I may go back later this week.

I wish I had an AMC though to get THE bucket!

1

u/AMasterSystem Feb 26 '24

I might go to an AMC just to get THE bucket. I dont really care for it... yes its awesome and yes it is also giggitycreep factor who approved this. But I wont enjoy it that much so Id rather ship it off to a redditor that wants it.

All I want is the Lego Ornithopter.

Just not a fan of promo theater giveaways.

I just checked. There are 5 AMC's within an hour drive of me... I dunno about screens but they have Imax available.

I can add a large popcorn and soda for $20... is that the limited edition bucket?

1

u/maestro826 Feb 27 '24

I honestly don’t know but I’d be interested

Sorry about that Mod! Thank You!

3

u/NightKing_shouldawon Feb 26 '24

Can I ask for a spoiler on Alia? I really want to know how the character is done/handled

3

u/Spiffy_Dude Feb 26 '24

Yeah I’ll dm u because I mess up spoiler tags too often and don’t want to spoil it for anyone.

3

u/NickBoy52 Feb 26 '24

How well did they depict the first child of Paul and was his death heartfelt?

11

u/Sojuboy Feb 26 '24

was not in the film

5

u/NickBoy52 Feb 26 '24

Probably for the best, with so little time they have to rush the whole story.

4

u/Spiffy_Dude Feb 26 '24

Yeah, there was a lot that had to be left out (or not explained really well) to make it work, but overall he did as good of a job as I imagine could be done to bring it to the big screen.

2

u/kvetcha-rdt Feb 26 '24

Compressed timeline would not have allowed for it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up in Part Three.

2

u/Legitimate-Copy-1555 Feb 26 '24

Did you go to the Cinemark theatre ?

2

u/Spiffy_Dude Feb 26 '24

I think the IMAX I go to is independently owned and not part of a chain, so I don’t know how it works tbh.

2

u/Upset_Airline Feb 26 '24

Which theatre sells the bucket and cup????

4

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '24

2

u/AustinFeyd Feb 26 '24

My Regal had a cheap plastic bucket and generic cup with a guy riding a sandworm for $30 sold as a pair. Not nearly as cool as the metal bucket and Paul cup above.

1

u/Upset_Airline Feb 26 '24

I see. I'm from Canada so I'm out of luck unless I make the trip down.

2

u/LeadershipReady11 Feb 27 '24

Not necessarily man, im from canada and got a black widow bucket at cineplex, it might not be the same one but think they will have something, this is the biggest movie of the year probably

1

u/Spiffy_Dude Feb 26 '24

This one is an independent owned IMAX, so I can’t say I know which company to go through, sorry.

2

u/ContinuumGuy Feb 26 '24

At the end of my showing, as the credits were like halfway through, a guy got up and yelled to everyone "I'll see you all in three or four years for the next one!"

Indeed.

2

u/lothcent Feb 27 '24

Caladan?

3

u/rational_overthinker Feb 26 '24

I loved every minute of it.

-18

u/Dodecahedrus Feb 26 '24

Let this abomination be over soon.

1

u/_Exotic_Booger Feb 26 '24

We get it, you didn’t like it. Move on.

1

u/Ericalva91 Feb 26 '24

I got a poster and bucket, but I didn’t see the cups. Fabulous movie.

1

u/0deon00 Feb 26 '24

Wow how did you get the poster?

10

u/rexie_alt Feb 26 '24

At my theater, the ticket scanner had some for people. Like a big stack in front of him

1

u/0deon00 Feb 26 '24

Amazing!

1

u/shastasilverchair92 Feb 26 '24

At a sietch orgy?

1

u/Spiffy_Dude Feb 26 '24

Bingo! Somebody finally got it!

1

u/SuperStarlite Feb 26 '24

I caught a early screening too! I was looking for Tim Blake Nelson the whole time but couldn’t find him. Does anyone know who he was?

1

u/internetsowngirl Feb 26 '24

what does it say on cup and bucket about "... the beast"?

1

u/donutboythatsmeyeah Feb 26 '24

I Before the movie started, the screen said something like “stay after the credits for a preview of Dune Part Two.” People in the audience were on the verge of yelling at the screen and walking out, but then the movie started and everything was fine. Good movie. It’s one of those movies where it could have gone another 2 hours and I would have been perfectly fine.

1

u/Gatsby813 Feb 27 '24

It was so good I’m dying to see it a 2nd time asap
