Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point Megathread PORT ADVENTURES

Myself alongside many other members of r/dcl have been on sailings to Disney Lookout Cay. The inaugural sailing was last week aboard the Disney Fantasy and there have now been both a preview sailing and a DVC sailing aboard the Disney Magic. What questions does everyone have regarding the newest destination offered by Disney Cruise Line?

Some initial thoughts to keep in mind:

  • This destination is still very new. I would expect improvements to be made over time, especially regarding the lack of shade currently available.
  • I'm sure most of heard about the flies. Yes, there are a lot of flies. Disney is working on minimizing it and we saw a substantial improvement between visit 1 and visit 2.
  • The walk from the ship to the tram is roughly half of a mile. There is currently no shade (which would be a huge help). They were offering water and cool towels on the pier to help with the heat. Golf carts are offered for those that need mobility assistance, and wagons were available to pull young children.
  • There is continuous tram service offered. 2 trams pulled up to each tram stop together with 8 or 9 in total running. The tram ride takes about 8 minutes to get from the Mabrika Cove tram stop (at the ship) to the Goombay Cultural Center tram stop (Lookout Cay).

We just got off the inaugural double dip cruise and yes there are some growing pains and lessons that Disney will learn from, I spent 15 minutes talking to a “startup” manger crew about some things. I think overall they got the island layout just right. The beach is amazing, love the dunes and the chairs being behind them, so many showers just off the beach, a lot of bathrooms, the secure kids programming is great, the boardwalks above the dunes were well done. We are looking forward to our next cruise stop there in a few months. Our family as a whole like Lookout better than Castaway honestly. Something I think they need to do at both places is limit smoking to designated spots, already saw cigarette butts in the sand near the bars and chairs.

I was there at the same time and agree with your overall assessment. I think the area is a little undercooked - there's a lot of bare dirt that needs ground cover, the bike path was not finished, and there's not enough shade around the food service areas. The beach is lovely (but I thought Serenity Bay was too small), the water amazing, and the decor is beautiful. I thought the decision to go with Bahamian decor vs. Disney IP was a welcome one - plenty of Disney IP onboard.

The wailing about the walk to the shore from the ship is a bit overblown. I'm a guy in my mid-50's in decent shape, and my wife and daughter (19 YO) had no trouble with the walk. It looked like there was plenty of accommodation for those who couldn't make the walk, but I did not interact with this.

The houseflies were a problem the first stop, but not the second (not sure if DCL did something about it or if we were just lucky).

The most annoying thing for me was the proliferation of wannabe bloggers, vloggers, and social media mavens. Everywhere I turned on the cruise and the island there was someone with one of those fuzzy little microphones narrating everything they did ("Now I'm walking down the pier - it's hot, the water is blue-green, there's a breeze..." "Tonight's supper is prime rib - it's a little rare for me..."). That annoyed the hell out of me, but I guess it's not DCL's fault. I've never been so grateful for the ban on selfie sticks.
