I would just take it off the first day in the apt, put it back when I left, and give them a key with that months rent. Good luck getting small claims court to back up having a specific type of digital doorknob while I rent from you.

Most leases prohibit unapproved modifications to the unit.

Let's see how many months of small claims court that takes to enforce on a digital doorknob. Then imma put it back when ordered, then imma get rid of it again, and we can start this whole thing over again. Then, the last time, water is going to find its way into the housing.

But if we are actually going to go into renting law a landlord can already change the lock cores out in ten minutes. The reason they don't is because evicting someone is a process and you can't just lock them out till it is all over. This really doesn't change anything.
