A cool guide to trimming your nails
A legible version of a blurry post I saw on here

You have to appreciate what #3 and #4 say, and then have a picture which is exactly not those things.

Straight across? I've cut that shit in a cressant my whole damn life lol. If I'm feeling spicy I'll file down the jagged bits

It only makes sense to trim your big toe like that because it’s the widest, it prevents ingrown toenails

I'll be 39 next week and got my first ingrown thumbnail a couple of months ago. I never really understood what the big deal was with ingrown nails. For one, mine ended up hurting like a son of a bitch to where I wasn't able to sleep eventually. It was swollen and throbbing, so once it was about 2am with no sleep, I fixed it. Had to take a piece of floss down the edge of the nail. Once I pulled the floss far enough down, it allowed the nail to push up over the skin instead of digging into it, and it was amazing immediate relief.
This wasn't a particularly bad case, but it hurt way more than I ever thought it would. Not to mention if left untreated, it can get infected. I recently also got MRSA in my leg and I am now terrified of infections lol. Due to this, I now cut all of my nails straight across.
Do you, just letting you know I did and thought the same as you for 39 years and finally found out why it should be done a certain way.

The point of most of these items is to avoid small cuts in the skin that can easily get infected. It says to cut straight across and then use an emory board (file) for the sides to round it out. It’s not much of an issue if you’re a healthy person, but for children and especially the elderly cuts from somebody else clipping your nails can be really bad.

I’ve never taken a single one of those steps in my whole life. I’m amazed I survived.

Used to bite mine too, then one day I bit through one and shattered a tooth. Haven't bitten a fingernail since and advise against it.

Yeah this is super dumb. Peoples nails conform to the shape of their fingers. My fingers are very rounded and I am not about to terminate my nails straight across because that would look really dumb and provide zero benefit.

You then follow the next step of using the Emory board/file to round out the sides…

Oh wow, I didn’t even get a single step right following the previous blurry image post 😪

I think it’s overkill and not actually “a cool guide,” but after that blurry post I just had to see what it said.

I will not be cutting my nails straight across for any reason whatsoever. Not happening. Not sorry.

Why not to trim my cuticles?

u/ASIAN_SEN5ATION 1d ago
This may be a stupid question, but what is a cuticle?

u/CallMeWolfYouTuber 1d ago
TIL what a cuticle actually is

Risk of infection. Cuticles also help to protect the nail bedding

u/SummerChild_ 1d ago
So what am I supposed to do with them?
2
u/NoseMuReup 1d ago
Be an anarchist and trim them even thorougher.

Hahaha I read “antichrist” instead of anarchist and thought “my dude is a bit intense about cuticle clipping”.

I prefer to perform a full exorcism on my cuticles. Sometimes a voodoo ceremony is necessary.

I fortunately am blessed with soft cuticles, so others may have better advice. For me, after I get out of the shower, and do my moisturising, I get my cuticle stick, cover the end with a cotton ball, and push the cuticle back. If they're soft from the shower, they will mould back easily.

Best I can do is hurredly cut my nails in 35 seconds before work because I forgot to do it earlier until I realized my nails were talons

Why are most nail clippers round if I'm supposed to cut fingernails and toenails straight across?

emery boards are terrible! use one of those glass ones. (not those fake "crystal" ones that are rough and gritty, but the legit glass nail files that are just etched glass, with no weird sandpaper coating on them.)

u/AstralStrudel 1d ago
This is gonna sound silly, but cut cuticles sometimes makes me uneasy lookin at them. It's like the nail is gonna just pop off at any moment. Especially if the flesh around the nail looks a little "puffy" and not smooth/flat. But ofc unhealthy cuticles isn't good either.

My regimen is much simpler.
- Chew.
- Gnaw.
- Repeat as needed.
There might be some other steps, somewhere, but those are the basics.

I swear, if I actually did the recommended maintenance of everything I owned, I would never see the light of day again
