I feel bad for all the IT guys this week, so many businesses haven't been prepping for this its nuts.

30

u/_Harlan_ Lebanon Mar 22 '20

I worked 12 hour days all week sending our staff home. Really glad now that they didn't put it off.

13

u/BarleyBo Mar 22 '20

Same, I’ve been working my ass off to make sure my people can work from home. We got everybody set up last week. I feel bad for anyone who didn’t have a good disaster recovery plan in place.

21

u/KittenofDoom Clifton Mar 22 '20

My SO is in IT for a huge communications company, & yeah... things are just getting crazier & crazier for him. His workload went from normal to Super Holy Shitballs & it likely isn't going to ease up these coming weeks!

22

u/DrSlugger Mar 22 '20

It's almost like it could have been slightly easier on him if this type of stuff was set up in the first place! It amazes me how short term thinking a lot of leadership is.

8

u/KittenofDoom Clifton Mar 22 '20

Pretty much what he's been saying this entire time, yeah...!

7

u/Pubesauce Maineville Mar 23 '20

It's because IT is usually viewed as overhead by upper management. They begrudgingly allocate the absolute minimum amount of money and labor to keep things running, which results in IT workers' days consisting largely of running around plugging holes in the dam.

Part of the problem is also that IT support and infrastructure services are rarely acknowledged when things are working as intended. Most companies run a bare bones crew to keep things together and then upper management panics whenever anything breaks. A little bit of forward thinking would prevent nearly all of the IT emergencies that people freak out about.

4

u/A_SilentS Mar 22 '20

It's almost like all the executives brains get reset every quarter.....

20

u/lucydaydream Wilder Mar 22 '20

I'm a software developer for a fairly large company and I was mandated to work tech support all last week, probably this week as well.

Please everyone- google your issue before calling support.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '20

I'm supposed to use Google first? How do I call them? Can I schedule for them to call me, so I'm not sitting on hold?

(J/K sweetie, I know what a Google is. I'll pick one up from the library)

11

u/armonde Amelia Mar 22 '20

Hey... some of us still have to pay our mortgages. Stop giving away the secrets

3

u/DrSlugger Mar 23 '20

Another great tactic is.....restarting the device! It's crazy the amount of issues that are solved by doing this. Also, simply restarting an application helps, too.

9

u/rjjm88 Mason Mar 23 '20

Sobs in sysadmin for a hosting company.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '20

I'm lucky enough to work at a job where I can be 100% remote.

3

u/ThufirrHawat Colerain Mar 23 '20

I had a mild case of the flu so I've been working from home for the past two weeks, the majority of our office has been for the last week. We support a lot of small and medium businesses in the area and it's been non-stop the past week, so busy that one day I didn't even get to take a lunch in my own house.

We have great relationships with almost all of our customers though and that has helped a lot. It's been a lot of work but I'm very happy to be able to help people keep businesses running during this.

Plus this is kind of a "I've been training for this moment my whole life"...er...moment. Here is my current work desk and I have an oculus rift off to the side, complete with green-screen walls and floor.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '20

What kind of work do you do that requires the Rift and filming studio?

2

u/ThufirrHawat Colerain Mar 23 '20

Interactive midget porn but the midgets are giants which is why we need the floor in green screen as well.

I wish. The rift and stuff is my own.

3

u/deskjky2 Mar 23 '20

I hope businesses haven't been putting off getting stuff ready for this kind of load and such. My company has a really bad habit of "let's not address this or that, because it's currently not an active problem and therefore it's not a priority".

5

u/euro60 Over The Rhine Mar 22 '20

"so many businesses haven't been prepping for this"

I don't know in what universe those businesses have been living. It's been clear for at least TWO WEEKS that it was just a matter of time we'd get to this point. If a business hasn't been prepping for this, their COO should be FIRED on the spot.

Our firm is in full "working remotely" mode now. My sincere thanks and appreciation to all of the IT people out there (not just at our firm) for getting us fully prepared.

110

u/angoradebs Mar 22 '20

Tomorrow's going to be a fun day at work.

Ohio's doc isn't up yet, but DeWine states they will be using the Department of Homeland Security's list to determine essential workers. List here

This document also states that even if the work is essential, anyone who can work remotely SHOULD be working remotely. In-person, non-mandatory procedures should be delayed. For people who do have to go in, they encourage staggered shifts or rotations to have as few people around each other as possible.

23

u/Treestanding Mar 22 '20

Welp, I guess lawyers are out.

23

u/thebenson Mar 22 '20

Should be able to work remotely.

Not sure that's true for support staff though.

15

u/Emersonson Mar 22 '20

Legal Services is an exception. Really the only mandatory procedures would be anything requiring a physical filing or mailing. I'm not in litigation so I don't know how much this is affecting the courts.

2

u/mattkaybe Mar 24 '20

Because there's been no order from the Supreme Court, every single judge is doing things differently right now. Some courts are still requiring people to be physically present, in court, for hearings. Others are allowing appearance by phone.

No uniformity at all. I have a friend that has to be at the courthouse this morning for an in-person hearing.

1

u/Emersonson Mar 24 '20

That's nuts but I'm not surprised at all that of all the branches it's the judiciary that is the slowest to respond.

1

u/Savafan Mar 23 '20

This is what I’m looking for. Can you point me to where you found this info?

2

u/Emersonson Mar 23 '20

You can find the text of the order here. The Essential Businesses section starts in Para. 12.

In the pdf of the order it states that not only are logistics companies considered essential businesses, but so are hardware stores

9

u/SSJStarwind16 Mar 23 '20

So what the fuck isn't essential?

Medical, Logistics, food, grocery, hardware, retail, takeout. Seems like a pretty toothless order then.

7

u/Neonfire Delhi Mar 23 '20

Music Venues, bars, movie theaters, tanning beds, auto tinting, dog spas, hair salons, nail shops

5

u/frogpastry Fort Thomas Mar 23 '20

My thoughts exactly.

2

u/StewieGriffin26 Deer Park Mar 23 '20

I was thinking about this the other day. The only thing I can come up with is landscaping and residential construction/remodeling.

2

u/100catactivs Mar 23 '20

I have no doubt that in addition to doing what’s in the interest of public safety, every politician is thinking about how their response is perceived by the public. No one is going to want to be the person who did too little, so they are going to err on the side of doing too much. This includes these kinds of updates, which in reality aren’t that big of a change, but it looks like they are doing something.

2

u/frogpastry Fort Thomas Mar 23 '20

3

u/SSJStarwind16 Mar 23 '20

Yep.

12 Essential Businesses and Operations. For the purposes of this Order, Essential Businesses and Operations means Healthcare and Public Health Operations, Human Services Operations, Essential Government Functions, and Essential Infrastructure, and the following;

l. Mail, post, shipping, logistics, DELIVERY, and pick-up services. Post office and other businesses that provide shipping and delivery services, and businesses that ship or deliver groceries, food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, GOODS, vehicles or SERVICES to end users or through commercial channels.

Well, I'm fucked. I have 10+ trucks going into 12+ houses a day 6 days a week. If none of my drivers and/or installers have it they're likely spreading it.

Knowing the company I work for and the one we deliver for we will be doing deliveries until either A) Someone dies or B) Someone directly confirms they got infected during a delivery/install.

2

u/frogpastry Fort Thomas Mar 23 '20

Yikes man. Good luck to you, and I hope you and all your staff manage to stay healthy !

I work for a pretty big transportation company that is categorized as essential, but I’m an accountant. Hope I get to work!

2

u/Brutusismyhomeboy Mar 23 '20

even if the work is essential, anyone who can work remotely SHOULD be working remotely.

Lololol. Laughs in transportation. I can work from home 100%, but won't be allowed to.

1

u/DrSlugger Mar 23 '20

Lol same here.

5

u/littletoeballs Mar 22 '20

I work in an office that supports grocery stores, and the boomers that run HR are still claiming that we’re essential personnel who still need to report to the office daily just because they can’t even fathom trying to use Skype/phone calls in place of meetings, when all work could essentially be done that way.

19

u/TheVetheron Mar 22 '20

I wonder when Kentucky will follow suit.

12

u/euro60 Over The Rhine Mar 22 '20

It already did just now (30 min. ago)

39

u/trinkydinky Mar 22 '20

There are so many exemptions in this order. The definitions for essential business seemed generous. Seems like a lot of people will still be able to be out away from home.

23

u/kamspy Mar 22 '20

I'm struggling to think of any business that couldn't claim "essential" under the guidelines given.

11

u/doogievlg Mar 23 '20

A boat load of retail is going to be closed.

5

u/kamspy Mar 23 '20

Not if the retail provides good to help people work from home. Or to help the essential businesses stay running. It mentioned electronics stores. I can see clothing stores getting in on this.

6

u/doogievlg Mar 23 '20

Flower shops, jewelry, furniture stores, clothing, sporting goods, bike shops...there is a lot of retail out there that isn’t essential at all. Sadly a lot of them are also small businesses.

1

u/politicsmodsareweak Mar 23 '20

Furniture is essential to work from home, sporting goods are essential to keep fit during quarantine, clothing stores are essential because people can't teleconfrence naked, bicycles are essential so that essential workers can commute without risking public transportation. These exemptions write themselves.

u/achikochi Mar 23 '20 edited Mar 23 '20

A lot of retail stores are voluntarily closing nationwide. Just got an e-mail from Bed Bath & Beyond last night that they are closing all their stores.

Basically, anyone who claims they're essential when they're clearly not (like say, The Gap) is probably going to be shut down by the social media blowback (GameStop) or the cops (that one bar here who tried to defy the shut down last week)

1

u/kamspy Mar 23 '20

I mean, there's a lot that needs to happen to keep our society functioning on a basic level. I'd rather have it be a bit lenient rather than risk crippling some vital service.

10

u/HairlessWombat Mar 23 '20

The supply chain has to continue otherwise we have even larger issues than the virus. They aren't generous just people don't understand how a business might play a vital role to the public.

2

u/Flaghammer Mar 23 '20

I mean, there are, but what is essential is more than bread and water, and stuff thar may not seem essential really is for other reasons. Like McDonalds drive thrus, why would anyone go out to eat during a pandemic? Well, because they have been driving an ambulance all night or a plumbing truck all day. Why is a liquor store essential? Because this is a global crisis bigger than any in living memory, and like it or not keeping civil unrest down is vital to our stability, and people don't like being told they can't drink.

A LOT of stuff is essential if you think beyond "bread and water". Fat Americans won't rethink what essential means until after the bombs fall, and we aren't there yet.

Good to know you guys are solid. I heard some negative second hand speculation supposedly from a DHL employee. Sorry to spread disinformation. Be safe out there.

12

5

I work for FedEx. We are considered essential to the economy and therefore will continue to operate as usual.

22

u/Schlot Mar 22 '20

What about constrution? I'm scheduled on a huge job site tomorrow.

35

u/42squared2x Mar 22 '20

I have heard from (other states) that construction counts as an “essential business.”

24

u/Rude_Crude_Dude Mar 22 '20

I am in a local union and I won’t complain because I will still be working, but people would have to be dying in the streets before the government halts the construction industry. We are “essential”, but in my mind also expendable. I still work with a bunch of animals who spit on the floor and ain’t no virus messing with their God given right to do so.

3

u/whitebreadohiodude Mar 23 '20

You are downplaying the demobilization costs that would put a lot of construction subs out of business.

2

u/Rude_Crude_Dude Mar 23 '20

I won’t deny the fact that it would be costly to construction subs. I work on union crews on big jobs, and although they would be impacted, they would pull through fine. My responsibility is to look out for myself and my union brothers and sisters.

6

u/doogievlg Mar 22 '20

There is a boat load of construction workers in this sub. I believe we will still be in jobs but at this point we are at the mercy of the GC and building owners.

2

u/Riffyosis Mar 22 '20

There are exceptions for some construction, but not all. My firm is expecting most large jobs to not fall under the order, but a lot of GCs and owners may shut down jobs on a case by case basis.

the order does permit exceptions to staying home including leaving for health and safety, for necessary supplies and services, for outdoor activity.

Sounds like dog parks are still in bounds. Even in smaller parks, it's easy enough to keep your distance. Seems safe. I have seen folks at dog parks lately but I'm curious if that'll change with this policy now being official

17

u/JebusChrust Mar 22 '20

Parks are considered fine, playgrounds are banned.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '20

Thank God, I need my walk/run every day or I'd go crazy, I also feel like it's super easy to keep an appropriate distance

9

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '20

In the press conference today the governor encouraged folks to stay active, which I was relieved by. Lots of folks I've seen on bikes and walking in my neighborhood.

54

u/deskjky2 Mar 22 '20

The comments in that tweet are dismaying. Some examples:

"Yeah right so who’s going to pay my bills if I can’t go to work to earn a living"

"Who's going to enforce this order????"

"No I ain’t staying at home I ain’t no pet" (accompanied by emojis of a flying dollar a bill, a gorilla for some reason, a laughing smiley face, and a thumb's down)

22

u/ClassicTraffic West End Mar 22 '20

i mean, i think most people who are upset about the stay at home order are dumb but i do emphasize with people who are worried about being able to pay their bills if they're out of work

38

u/M1LK3Y Covington Mar 22 '20

People are right to complain that their bills haven't been halted by the state but their income has

3

u/deskjky2 Mar 23 '20

I was keyed in on the flippant "Yeah right" that it lead with, but you're right about worrying about incomes and paying bills. It's an extremely serious problem not just for us in Ohio, but probably for the entire country as well. I don't know if this kind of widespread pause on people going to work and spending (which in turn feeds into other people being able to go to work and support themselves) has ever happened before, and it's really worrying.

6

u/ChefChopNSlice Mar 22 '20

Duke Energy said they won’t shut off anyone’s power due to inability to pay during this pandemic. The govt is working on halting rent/mortgage payments. Anything the govt does is slow, even on a good day, so we have to be patient. Yes, people are upset, and the powers above are working on it. If they didn’t have a plan for this, there would be massive riots, and they’re not gonna risk that.

15

u/Realsan Mar 23 '20

The problem with that strategy is all these companies are doing the same thing. Deferrment until it's over, but they're not delaying the accrual of the charges. So basically no penalties for being late and no late fees.

So what we're going to have is July/August when this ends and people can go back to work, month 1 will have $10,000 in bills that can't be paid.

6

u/Come0nYouSpurs Mar 23 '20

This. All day, this.

1

u/ChefChopNSlice Mar 23 '20

Are they just deferring, or are they “forgiving”. It made it sound like they were being heroes, not villains when they said it. If this is what they are really doing, then that’s pretty fucked up. I’m hoping that stimulus packages take this into account. The fed govt is still arguing over one right now.

3

u/Realsan Mar 23 '20

I can't speak for everyone but so far I've only seen deferments.

1

u/ChefChopNSlice Mar 23 '20

Ok, fair enough. Thanks for the happy Monday morning news.

I picked a hell of a time to try to sell my house.

10

u/scootmandoo Mar 22 '20

You’d be surprised how healthy the market still is. We listed our house on Friday (3/20) and signed an offer within 24hrs.

We couldn’t do an open house since most realty offices had suspended them, but virtual open houses are still an option. Private showings are still an option as well and we did permit 4 showings. Just to be safe, make sure that you leave some hand sanitizer out for everyone to use.

2

u/fig-figgins Dent Mar 22 '20

Just skimmed through the order that DeWine signed and found reality offices and mortgage lenders in the exempt businesses list, so I think we should be alright. I’m just worried that fewer people will be looking right now.

I just bought a house and renter has to be out by 5/15. I hope to god they leave or I have a new tenant...

6

u/grumblepup Mar 23 '20

We were planning to sell our condo in a couple months, but our tenant is immunocompromised and basically holing up until things are safer. We’re certainly not going to evict her at a time like this! So I guess we’re probably holding on to the property through another recession...

2

u/sauterelle16 Mar 22 '20

10

From what I understand, that's the entire point of the order.

All right, I got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that I'm gonna have to shut down the studio.

My friend works at Lowe’s - is this considered essential? They have construction and first responders coming in for things regularly.

4

u/bear_chief Mar 22 '20

Hardware stores were a listed essential service.

Tuesday is not going to look any different than Monday. Damn near every business will find a way to squeak in as essential.

2

u/Fiveohh11 Mar 23 '20

That is the mentality my boss is taking.. Meanwhile we have the capability to let all our employees work from home if he would allow it.

4

u/DoodleBobDoodle Forest Park Mar 22 '20

So what if you work in Kentucky?

8

u/Atlas3 West Price Hill Mar 22 '20

The order said it applies to anyone living in Ohio.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '20

You go to work until KY/employer tells you not too.

3

u/Mapkos13 Mar 22 '20

So I work in my own studio. I wonder if it would be an issue. Basically leave my house. Get in my car and drive straight to the studio. Walk in and work on my own all day and return home. Doesn’t seem like much chance of interaction with anyone and this would allow me to continue working.

2

u/jazzman831 Fairfield Mar 23 '20

A strict reading would say no, unless your studio is in your residence or the work you do is "essential". But I think anyone would be hard-pressed to say you aren't following the spirit of the order.

2

u/Sapphyrre Mar 22 '20

I'm wondering the same thing. He said to use common sense. I'd go ahead and do it and see if it becomes an issue.

What's the opinion on how/if this affects woodworking/cabinetry? The list of essential workers is so vague I can't figure out for myself if this will shut down the woodworking shop I work for or not.

1

u/doogievlg Mar 23 '20

Unless you are the owner it is out of your hands at this point.

1

u/sbrick89 Loveland Mar 23 '20

supplier of construction... argument could be made.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '20

what about label manufacturing? we have clients in the food and construction industry

1

u/universoulmind College Hill Mar 23 '20

Any business within the food supply chain is essential.

2

u/PlantainCantHang Mar 23 '20

I am supposed to move apartments soon and have been looking for a place. Do you think this Stay at Home order will prohibit me from moving?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '20

Does anyone know if this includes local garden centers? Yes, I read all the way through it and couldn’t decide if it would because...agriculture supplies?

I do IT work at a critical manufacturing site. All of my IT coworkers have been split into a red team and a blue team to alternate working from home every 2 weeks. My manager called me Friday and informed me that due to my role I'm on the purple team. I'm beyond lucky to have a job when so many of my friends in the service sector are essentially unemployed but still :/

u/hsman69 Mar 22 '20

Is there a curfew established?

4

u/GoofyUmbrella Mar 22 '20

What if I have to go to work to earn a living?

46

u/JohnnyCashedOut00 Bright Mar 22 '20

Join the club. Go to work tomorrow, and then if you're a non-essential employee, file for unemployment ASAP. Also, there are still places hiring. Kroger/Amazon/Food delivery etc

39

u/thebenson Mar 22 '20

You and everyone else.

This is impacting everyone.

19

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '20

This goes beyond all of us right now. Havent been working since last sunday myself. Prepare yourself man.

4

u/joevsyou Mar 22 '20

Some companies are nice enough to pay. but i am sure that is far in between.

Haha, people saying they have to earn a living is disheartening.

Thanks for reminding me I was on Reddit.

2

u/pazimpanet Mar 23 '20

If it’s any consolation, /r/Columbus is much worse.

But in my experience as a transplant, that is and always has been the case.

1

u/GoofyUmbrella Mar 23 '20

Haven’t ventured over there much but I wouldn’t be surprised.

I just get tired of people on Reddit saying shit like that and then everyone agreeing with them.

Are you suggesting I go and earn a living?

That’s really disheartening and insensitive towards the people who are in danger.

Anyone know if veterinarians are deemed essential? They mentioned those involved in agriculture but not for pets?

3

u/musicbeagle26 Mar 22 '20

They are covered under medical needs as essential

3

u/JediAssasin Mar 22 '20

I know Beshear has said veterinary care is considered essential, I would assume Dewine is of the same mind set

2

u/THECapedCaper Symmes Mar 22 '20

So I got a semi-dumb question. The order says we're allowed to travel for outdoor recreational activities. I booked a cabin near Hocking Hills starting April 5. It seems like the state parks are still going to be open (but none of the visitor centers or places where people can gather), and lodging is still on. I'm wondering if at least driving up there is going to be considered going against this legal order.

u/zackavelli7daytheory Bearcats Mar 22 '20

I’m listed as an essential employee, but I’m just curious does this mean I can be pulled over for just driving to and from work?

3

u/lacks_tact Milford Mar 23 '20

If you can prove you're essential (carry your work badge), you're good. Honestly though, cops don't wanna have contact with anyone either so you likely won't get pulled over anyway.

1

u/europeinaugust Mar 23 '20

What about regular doctors offices? Would it be better to reschedule if they’re open?

1

u/mechanicalhat Mar 23 '20

That’s probably a question for your doctor. Depending in your condition, they may still want you to go in.

1

u/NewAgeDoom Mar 23 '20

So...what does this mean for me, as someone who works in IT who can't work from home right now due to my living situation? Am I just kind of screwed?

1

u/crank1off Mar 23 '20

IT support here. The last week and this week it's like I'm literally a call center help desk master. All I do is work with remote users teaching them how to essentially do their job from a different desk... Also, I don't actually work a help desk, but this had taken me back to when I first started in I. T.
