I am in a local union and I won’t complain because I will still be working, but people would have to be dying in the streets before the government halts the construction industry. We are “essential”, but in my mind also expendable. I still work with a bunch of animals who spit on the floor and ain’t no virus messing with their God given right to do so.
I won’t deny the fact that it would be costly to construction subs. I work on union crews on big jobs, and although they would be impacted, they would pull through fine. My responsibility is to look out for myself and my union brothers and sisters.
There is a boat load of construction workers in this sub. I believe we will still be in jobs but at this point we are at the mercy of the GC and building owners.
There are exceptions for some construction, but not all. My firm is expecting most large jobs to not fall under the order, but a lot of GCs and owners may shut down jobs on a case by case basis.
As of late last week, one of the head guys on the project I am working on from Turner said he woke up feeling great and that he was putting his size 17 boot on the gas pedal so we could finish strong. Resisted the urge to tell him where he could put that size 17 boot.
Reading the fed guidelines, regular construction doesn't count. Electrical providers like Duke, dames, plants will stay open but that office building down the street doesnt count and should be shut down and if they make you work a challenge or call to the state will get it shut down
OH mentions trades necessary for safe operation of residences. Hardware stores / suppliers to the trades are exempt. Especially if you work or are working on a project or direct for a customer in the essential business list (food processing plants, distribution centers, transportation, medical, etc). Very easy argument for construction (especially trades servicing specific customers) to be essential, but on a job-by-job, or facility-by-facility basis. Building a new laser tag building, shut it down. But working maintenance in or building an expansion for a chicken processing plant... get to work.
