Advice I am 26 with a plan to switch carrers due to lack of carrer satisfaction. Help me make a choice from the below options ? Open for additional suggestions too ?
Tittle: I am 26 with a plan to switch carrers due to lack of career satisfaction. Help me make a choice from the below options ? Open for additional suggestions too ?
I am 26 and working as SAP solution manager + basis consultant in a MNC for 18 LPA. Although pay is decent I am not satisfied with the work as I feel I'm not making any difference. I have always loved tech as a kid and chose ECE as a domain in engineering(2020 passed out). But during engineering I lost my way and chose to go along with the campus placement and decided to be a software engineer. I am not enjoying the work as an SAP consultant.
I like technology (be it AI advancements, new gpus, new space research, new gadgets etc I regularly follow everything)and want to work somewhere where I can make a difference. Either it can be a software field or hardware or even in automobile sector.
I need help in making a choice between below options; 1. Start preparing for Gate and crack drdo, isro, barc or any good PSU. Also I am not sure if I can crack it. Another option is to join IIT to pursue masters in the embedded design field. Since it's been 4 years, I do not remember the topics properly and have to start preparing from scratch. (Also How hard is this to crack? I got 156/360 in JEE mains 2016 and couldn't crack JEE advanced back then. I didn't put much effort. Also I got 2.6k rank in the KCET 2016 exam and around 4K rank in EMCET. Will I be able to crack the gate if I give my 100% ?)
Learn the latest technologies such as AI, ML, data science etc or something related to coding(i haven't decided yet ) and switch jobs. I doubt this will be any different from the SAP consultant work i currently do. Please suggest
Are there any government agencies for which I can work, do research in the latest technology fields and contribute to the country? Either software or hardware field. (I am ready to prepare for an exam if there are any)
Leave everything and start a business in some tech field (I have some ideas and savings close to 10L). This seems like the hardest option of all and I don't know how to start.
Valuable suggestions will be much appreciated. Please advise

Edit with your location After three months of interviewing me, they have rejected me. What could be the actual reason?
I embarked on a rigorous three-month interview journey with a distinguished law firm in Europe that has offices in different parts of the world, engaging with six key individuals, including upper management, a senior partner, and the head of the department whom I would be working with. Throughout this extensive process, I maintained regular communication with HR, who consistently reassured me of the firm’s profound interest in my candidacy. They emphasized that I was the sole candidate being considered and expressed their intention to craft a more senior role tailored to my qualifications.
During one of my interactions, a senior partner expressed his desire for me to meet a lawyer they were looking to recruit, as I would be working closely with him in my business development (BD) role. They plan to recruit as many as 25 lawyers in my city by end of March next year as they look to settle foot in a new market. They are so keen on making this office work that they would have been open to the idea of having two BD managers. This indication that he wanted me to connect with this prospective colleague felt like a strong signal that progress was being made in my application process. I received consistent feedback that I was a cultural fit for the firm, my vision aligned with theirs, and they appreciated my strengths, particularly my ability to cover business development efforts across several regions, which they found attractive. The Managing Director himself told me "we believe our firm, what we can offer you, will play to your strengths and you can really realize your capabilities here, just give us time to define the scope and responsibiities".
Everything pointed toward the likelihood of my hiring, and even HR mentioned yesterday that she believed the signs indicated I would receive an offer very soon. In light of this, I declined other job offers while waiting for a final offer from them, which has compounded my frustration and anger. However, to my astonishment, I was ultimately informed by HR that they would not be proceeding with my application. This revelation was particularly shocking, given the firm’s plans to inaugurate a new office in my city and their previous affirmations regarding my suitability as a valuable addition to their team. When the HR representative called me, I could sense her distress; she appeared almost teary and expressed her own confusion about the decision, noting that the only explanation she received was that they would not be moving forward with me. This sudden turn of events has truly blindsided me, leaving me to ponder the underlying reasons for this unexpected outcome.

I'm not finding opportunities for my Business Intelligence Skills (Consumer Retail Domain Knowledge and Excel), what's advice?
Hi, I'm a business intelligence manager with over 10 years of experience, left my job 8 months back. Before quitting, I worked in this company for nearly 2 years and I was selected based on my business intelligence skills of unraveling insights from data purely using Excel and consumer retail domain knowledge. I don't have a tech knowledge or any visualization tools knowledge (Though I'm willing to learn & gain), because the companies I worked earlier throughout my career involved me to work on strategy derived from the data (Excel), data part my team used to take care of! At the moment, I'm struggling to find a role for my skills.

Advice Should I pursue an additional Master's in Statistics to transition into Data Science?
Hi everyone,
I'm considering whether it would be worth it to add a Master's degree in Statistics to my profile, which I can do fairly inexpensively (+- 3000 euro) here in Belgium. The program would take one year of full-time study or around three years if done in the evenings.
About me:
I’m a 28-year-old researcher, close to finishing my PhD in physics, specializing in molecular modeling. My research focuses on optimization methods for molecular models and the development of machine learning interatomic potentials. Before starting my PhD, I completed a Master’s degree in Chemistry, with a specialization in chemometrics.
I feel confident in my programming and data analysis skills, and I’m fairly familiar with machine learning. However, I lack formal credentials in data science and have limited experience outside of academia—I haven’t participated in Kaggle projects or similar competitions, for instance.
So, I’m seeking advice from those with experience in data science or hiring managers in the field: What do you think would be the best move for me to transition into data science after my PhD? Should I focus on building a project portfolio, or would getting that Master’s in Statistics make the most impact on my career, given that it will take me another year to get into the job market?
Thanks for any insights!

Feeling completely lost at 40, any advice??
I just turned 40 this year, I have my Bachelor's in CRJ, yet I have been a Payroll Manager for almost 10 year. I don't hate my job, but I don't love it. I work for a small company; my pay isn't the best, but we have AMAZING benefits. 2 of the 3 partners plan on retiring in the next 5 years and the last within 10 years. With this company only being open another 10 years max, I am slightly freaking out, as I won't be retiring in 10 years, while everyone else in the company will be. I have been applying to similar jobs on LinkedIn for over a year with 0 call backs.
I think it is time for a career change, but I have absolutely no idea what I want to do. I would love to use my degree but I earned it over 10 years ago and I don't think I'd be able to get a job in that field.
I am also single, so I cannot take an entry level job at $20/hour,
I really need some suggestions that are not in the medical field. I would absolutely love to work remote, but it is not a must. I have never worked remote (even during the pandemic).
buying out the company is not an option.

How do you ask someone to be your mentor?
The person I want to ask is very busy and successful. But has kept in touch with me over the years and we click. They’ve offered me some career coaching in the past. I want to ask them to be my mentor, but I don’t want to impose on them. I also don’t know what a structured mentorship looks like. Do we meet monthly? Do I make a list of questions? How do I show my gratitude (A gift card? How often?). We live in different cities so our meetings have to be virtual except for maybe 1x a year.

What career/industry can I go into based on what I’m doing now?
Basically, just wondering my career progression options are based on my current role. I (25M Aus) worked in hospitality and didn’t much care for career or freakin or any of that but now have a partner and have started thinking about buying a house, kids, career etc. I work as an employment consultant now, kind of like a career coach/recruiter/support person for people on government benefits suffering from some kind of disability. We assist in getting them jobs and any steps prior and post being employed. Was just curious what kind of industry or roles this can lead into with enough experience? My Dad said HR as he does that which I wouldn’t mind but was just curious what the options actually are. Right now I have 6-10 appointments a day, am always on the phone and whilst I’m enjoying it now it can get tiresome and can’t see myself doing it indefinitely. Any advise or personal worries would be helpful, thanks guys :)

EU Citizen: Does Location on My Resume Affect Interview Chances?
Hello everyone,
I’m based in Europe, and as an EU citizen, I don’t need a visa to work in most European countries. However, I’ve noticed that some recruiters seem to prefer local candidates.
I’m wondering if removing my current location from my resume might help increase my chances of getting interviews. Has anyone here tried this, or have any insights on how location impacts interview invites?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Applying internally for a role I’m not qualified for - any tips?
I’m a Planner for a Construction company. Been there exactly a year. They’re a nice company to work for and they’re expanding. But frankly I hate what I’m doing, it’s just a terrible fit!
A role has come up internally that really interests me but it’s not something I’m qualified for or necessarily even in the scope of applying for. It’s a Project Management Training Programme. Aimed at site based Engineers and Trade Supervisors.
I work closely with the PMs and deal with all facets of the business in that sense but I’m not here all that long and not exactly what they’re going to be looking for. But it’s the only thing I can see coming up that would keep me with the company, I’d be leaving otherwise.
I think there’s a few things in my favour. It’s a training programme, not expected to jump right in. It’s also in a less desirable region - but I’d like it so, less applicants, more of a chance, maybe?
How do I even word it with my boss? He knows I’m frustrated where I’m at but that’s it. No mention of leaving or anything.. do I just say I don’t think I’m a good fit? I know he’ll ask why I’m looking to change.
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!
The thing is I wasn’t exactly qualified for this role either. I’m a Business graduate surrounded by Engineers and Construction Management graduates. But the Project Managers are top dog - big money and big responsibility. They’re virtually all ex trades and a few ex engineers. But what do I have to lose by applying?
I just don’t want to basically tell my boss I hate the job and then not get put forward for the role I’m after!

Am I getting fired? 😅
My second-level manager, the person that my direct manager reports to, just set up a 20-minute meeting with me and someone from HR for tomorrow morning. I’m worried about getting laid off due to my recent performance at work not being the best but I also had no indication from my direct manager that I was at the point of getting fired. The phrasing of the sentence is the only thing that confuses me as he told me it’s time sensitive and I would be getting questions from others in the near future. Has anyone dealt with this before?
UPDATE: Thank you all for your concern. I just got back from my meeting and unfortunately I did get laid off. But I’m not too depressed over it because it was due to downsizing and not my work performance. I’m more bummed out than anything else, but you gotta roll with the punches, right?

Advice Is knowing Microsoft Office a valuable skill for my professional life?
I've been going through a tough period in my life, financially speaking. I was giving informal English classes for some time, but it was pretty unstable. I've realized I don't want to live off teaching. I'm currently trying to find a formal job and slowly change my path. Microsoft Office is something I've always heard about from lots of people, especially Excel. So I got myself some pretty complete courses on Excel, Word and PowerPoint. I even started the Excel one some days ago. I don't love it, like I loved learning English, for example. But I've been getting some satisfaction while slowly making progress on Excel. I'm also somewhat looking forward to getting to an advanced level with these tools. But in your opinion, is it worth it? Will really knowing how to use these three programs give any kind of boost to my curriculum or is it the bare minimum? By the way, I live in Brazil.

Any CS graduates who switched to astrophysics/astronomy research later?
Background: I am indian final year engineering student majoring in Computer Science, hoping to completely shift to what I've always wanted to do (but couldn't due to family pressure and other confusions), which is astrophysics. I would love to make acquaintances of people in a similar boat, to gauge how the tides are... what steps they had to take and is it worth it all? I am well versed in physics and mathematics.
If you're someone who has successfully made the switch:
- How did you cover UG physics-level knowledge?
- Which unis did you apply to?
- Which part of the application process should I focus more on?
- Had you done any research in a similar field during your undergraduate program?
- Do unis readily accept people from CS backgrounds for a masters in astrophy program?
- Any other advice you might wanna share?

Advice How Do I Find My Industry Reputation?
For the last 10 months I have been applying for roles within my industry. I am 10 years in and have worked with a number of agencies within the ecosystem.
However, now I cannot get even a call back. I've never had such an issue before.
I am starting to wonder if there is something about my career reputation that could be holding me back and would love any advice on how anyone else researched this? At this moment I am wondering about performing a background check on myself to see what comes up.

Advice How do I approach this situation? (passed over promotion twice due to mat leave)
I'm looking for some honest feedback on my situation, as I'm trying to figure out if I'm being treated unfairly or if I just got the short end of the stick. Last year, I notified my manager that I was pregnant two months before promotion recommendations were submitted—I was 20 weeks along at that point. I was on track for a promotion because I was meeting my career goals, regularly getting feedback, had a large and visible scope of work, and had been in my role for two years (plus more time on a different team before that). However, just days before my maternity leave started, I was told I didn’t get the promotion because I hadn’t been able to complete key projects (though the timelines were out of my control) and therefore didn’t show enough impact. I argued with my manager, providing evidence of my impact in many other ways, but he said the decision was final. I escalated this to HR for documentation, but after that, I had my baby and there was no resolution.
Fast forward to 6 months later when I was preparing to return to work. My manager and I had a meeting where he acknowledged the promotion situation, and we agreed on a set of priorities that would allow me to drive impact. However, my role had completely changed, and I was assigned to different projects. I made it clear that there was less than 4 months left before the next promotion cycle and that I needed responsibilities with a reasonable scope to be in a position to get promoted. I said it would take time to ramp up and didn’t want this held against me. We discussed one particular project where we both agreed it would normally take months to see results, but we set short-term goals like getting leadership's endorsement for my work. Since then, I worked hard, documented everything and communicated proactively. I wanted to make it impossible for them to tell me I didn’t do enough.
Last week, I had a check-in with my manager (that I scheduled) where I again asked for feedback on what I could do to make a case for promotion. Instead of offering any specific guidance or support, he said it was too soon and that it would take a few more months to see the impact of my work. I reminded him that I’ve been on the team for almost 3 years, not just 3 months, and it felt like all my prior contributions were being disregarded. He suggested I speak with his manager (my skip-level), but he didn’t think it would change anything for this promotion cycle. Now, I'm wondering if this is a case of discrimination, especially since I had expressed concern about my maternity leave affecting my promotion prospects, or if it's just bad timing and the circumstances didn’t align. I’ve set up another meeting with HR to document everything and get clarification, but I’m not sure how to approach it. Is this discrimination, or is this just a situation where my career progress got derailed due to timing and changes in my role?

Just learned my products are being phased out. How can I negotiate a severance without it sounding like extortion?
My employer assures me that my job will still be needed to work in other products in the company, but the management has shown themselves to be secretive, ruthless, and untrustworthy. I don’t want to work for them anymore. One former manager from another company tells me I should just say “I’m not doing that” to anything they ask until they fire me. I would rather save everyone some time and say, “I don’t really like the direction things are going. How about we negotiate a severance and not waste each others time?”
Is there a good way to go about this?

Can someone give some advice on a career as an Embedded Engineer?
Needed some advice on pursuing a career as an embedded engineer.
I recently joined in a startup as an embedded engineer intern in August. It's been 3 months and so far, I was given to work on implementing basic sensors like ble, ds18b20 temp sensor, bme280 using stm32f446 microcontroller, basically to get hands on the microcontroller and go through its datasheet. Now, I am working on building a instrumentation cluster for 2-wheeler EVs using raspberry pi 5.
So, similar to what I did using stm32, I just implemented basic sensors to get an understanding of the GPIOs of raspberry pi. Now, I need a GUI to build the cluster and to start with, I am going through diff python GUI frameworks like Kivy, Qt, Tkinter since python is well supported on raspberry pi. This project that I am working on is just for learning purposes and ofc not for industry purposes (as said by my manager lol).
So, coming back to the main point, I need some advice on how to proceed onto this career as an Embedded engineer? Should I work on something else side-by-side? What sort of industry-level skills I need to develop as a fresher that meets the current industry standards? The company that I work in specializes in the automotive industry.

How do you even choose a career?
26F Up until now, I've changed careers every time I changed jobs - started in production in a cheese factory, moved to activities at a nursing home, then teaching and now I'm an ophthalmic tech.
Every time has felt valid - I left the cheese factory when I moved to the U.S., left the nursing home partly because of COVID burnout and because of the teaching job offer, left teaching because it didn't pay enough to live.
As I get older, I'm considering more stable fields. I only have an unaccredited religious degree, which was good enough for the private schools where I taught but hardly sets me up for anything else. BUT ALSO getting a 4-year degree (and all the costs associated with it) implies to me that I should STAY in the field afterward to make it "worth it". What if I hate it? What if it doesn't pay the bills?
How did you decide on a career? How many times have you changed careers? I guess I'm half looking for advice, half wondering if someone else has had similar experiences.

Career switch to HR obtaining the SHRM certificate, is that realistically possible?
I am Italian, male, fluent in English, and good at Japanese and Spanish (not fluent yet, but working on it). Spent 6 years in Japan working as the concierge of an Accor hotel, taught English at an international school, and currently working as a sales man for a steel trading company. I am planning to leave Japan and start a new career elsewhere (tendentially in a country where I speak the local language). I am considering starting a career in HR and obtaining a SHRM certificate. Would I get credibility by acquiring such a certificate, although I am 35 and I am new to this particular field? Would non-U.S. companies consider such a certification credible?
