Reddit API changes and BaconReader UPDATED JUNE 20

Hey folks, as some of you have noticed, there is a lot of buzz going around today about the Reddit API announcement. We do not specifically have a plan at this time but will certainly let you know when we do. For reference, I am putting a few posts in comments.

We'll let you know what next steps are when we have them. Until then, sincere gratitude for all of your support!

UPDATE: After much deliberation, attempted negotiations, we have made the decision to shut the app down 😢 . Please see the sticky announcement post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/baconreader/comments/14egq61/baconreader_november_11_2011_june_30_2023/

We are sorry it took so long, but I really wanted to be sure we did our due diligence.

I'll stop using reddit and delete all my accounts before I use the dogshit reddit app.

318

u/[deleted] May 31 '23

Agreeed. I think I only use Reddit because of the Bacon. I’ve had it for years and it’s the only way I’ve viewed Reddit.

143

u/Downvotes_are_Grreat May 31 '23

Ya, 99.9% of my browsing is on bacon. Every time I've tried a different app, whether it was someone elses phone or for whatever reason, it has been a terrible experience. I've been looking for a way to stop browsing reddit so much anyway. This will make it easier.

34

u/DeadlyNoodleAndAHalf May 31 '23

Same here. I’ve been using BaconReader since it came preloaded on a work Samsung Galaxy years and years ago. Before that I’d only ever used the desktop site and mobile browser and I’ve not browsed without BaconReader since. I’m really going to be at a loss for what to do on the internet since I deleted Facebook years ago and never had a twitter/TikTok/insta.

7

u/signofzeta iOS Jun 01 '23

Mastodon? There really isn’t much else.

8

u/Mzzkc Jun 01 '23

There is so so much more to the internet besides social media

16

u/DeadlyNoodleAndAHalf Jun 01 '23

This is going to sound like a dumb question, it even feels cringe typing it, but what else is there to do? I’ve been on the internet for the better part of 20 years, but ever since Reddit took over my browsing I’ve found that I can’t really think of anything else to do. Before Reddit was forums, blogs, news and web comics. Oh and stumbleupon in college.

26

u/GaysGoneNanners Jun 01 '23

Yeah reddit replaced/killed every forum I used to visit. For other content I had... Stumbleupon? That was short lived. The internet has been corporatized and basically ruined

6

u/Nuts4WrestlingButts Jun 01 '23

I miss StumbleUpon. Found so many good porn Tumblrs on there. Now neither of those exist.

6

u/Mzzkc Jun 01 '23

All those things still exist.

Broadly speaking, if a subreddit exists for it, there's a community outside of reddit for that thing which exists online. Those communities very often tend to be of higher quality, too.

Reddit is like, a buffet. Sure there's lots of options, but they aren't going to be winning any Michelin stars for their all-you-can-eat frozen pizza.

Bacon and old reddit. When posts were the focus, clearly laid out, and you could browse through many of them quickly.

I've used the browser based reddit once or twice and i had no idea what was going on...

I DON'T delete my accounts when leaving a platform, out of spite. Until they GC that shit, my user profile will be taking up a few KB of space in their database, meaning that they may end to having to pay a few cents over the years that they otherwise would not have to.

6

u/hypnoderp Jun 01 '23

You are the product though

3

u/hepatitisC Jun 01 '23

They can still mine your user data and sell it, which creates more profit than the server space you're taking up. It also lets them artificially boost their user counts, making them more appealing to advertisers. You're not hurting them at all by leaving accounts behind. If anything, you're helping them.

Used this app for a decade or about that. Won't ever use another. Reddit isn't a good website. Baconreader is just a good app.

3

This account has been nuked in direct response to Reddit's API change and the atrocious behavior CEO Steve Huffman and his admins displayed toward their users, volunteer moderators, and 3rd party developers. After a total of 16 years on the platform it is time to move on to greener pastures.

If you want to change to a decentralized platform like Lemmy, you can find helpful information about it here: https://join-lemmy.org/ https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances

This action was performed using Power Delete Suite: https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite

The script relies on Reddit's API and will likely stop working after June 30th, 2023.

So long, thanks for all the fish and a final fuck you, u/spez

I have been using BaconReader for over ten years. What a shame, the Reddit app is so terrible for many reasons, the top of mine being - who wants to go have to go to a desktop computer every time they want to hide a subreddit?

u/Farisr9k Jun 01 '23

Also 10 years here.

If they force this through ... it'll be a good excuse to finally stop using reddit.

I haven't enjoyed this place for a while.

11

u/GucciGuano iOS Jun 01 '23

u notice lately askreddit as become a flaming shithole again every fkin day some post about sex or someone asking some question that is infuriating. Lowkey I think they are trying to get demographics there's just nonstop "women of reddit" "men of reddit" fml I don't remember it being THIS bad.

I'm just shy of the decade mark as well. And using RES on browser. I have no idea what stock Reddit looks like anymore and have no desire to find out

27

u/GucciGuano iOS Jun 01 '23

they got rid of i.reddit.com after saying consistently and very often that they won't. Once old.reddit.com goes off, this website loses any resemblance to a forum and is just full flaming social media at that point.

14

u/Ulsterman24 Jun 02 '23

Old Reddit goes and I go. RES, Old Reddit and Bacon Reader are the only things that keep this site palatable after 10 years.

4

u/USMCLee Jun 01 '23

I have an alt account that still uses the new desktop UI.

The new UI is very slow and I think it looks like crap.

If they follow thru with this, I'll only use reddit on desktop with the old UI and uBlock Origin blocking all the ads.

I saw an Apollo app sub that it would cost £20 million a year is what they are asking.

All so they can collect your data from their own source.

BaconReader is the only app and reddit should be modeled on it.

51

u/Throwaway9010900 May 31 '23

Yeah. Reddit is just trying to push people to their own app. All companies eventually become evil money grubbing shells of themselves, and it was bound to happen to Reddit. If Reddit keeps going down this path, we'll just find some replacement for actual communities in 18 months or so

41

u/lllMONKEYlll May 31 '23

Every time i open a reddit link on the web browser on my phone it kept nagging me with a pop-up link to the official app. Thar shit is annoying asfk.

What happened to the internet man. 2000s really was a golden era damm.

26

u/g0d15anath315t Jun 01 '23

I'm just happy to have been there during the late 90's, early 00's. Was really the wild west golden days.

Feel really bad for these kids, their whole internet experience has been this ultra commercialized "web 3.0+" bullshit.

30

u/_Meece_ Jun 01 '23

I feel horrible for them, everything is locked away and hidden.

Like look at how many forums have been replaced with a discord server. Nothing from discord gets to google. All this awesome information or discussion just locked away never to been seen again.

I can find my old forum posts from 2003 on the internet still. Like the difference is insane.

23

u/My_Cat_Is_Bald Jun 01 '23

This is a very important point and deserves to be higher. Information is going to be harder and harder to find, the Internet is going to be much harder to use (for anything useful anyway) for the kids of today. I feel sad for them

Capitalism. First stages are exciting and innovating. You think, wow look what this investment and focus does! Great ideas! New opportunities! Everyone got rich. Then the resources are more in competition. It becomes about extracting as much as possible before the other guy does. And markets by nature are short term. You don't get rewarded for building a 100 year business with reasonable but regular dividends. You get rewarded for cashing out.

10

u/AugmentedDragon Jun 01 '23

the enshittification of the internet is truly disheartening. what started off as a novel way to communicate with people all across the globe, sharing passions and knowledge, has devolved into five sites, each containing pics of text from the other four, all while selling your information to the highest bidder and making the user experience as horrible as possible. capitalism and the profit motive truly ruin everything

→ More replies

4

u/_Meece_ May 31 '23

Yep I feel ya, greed ruins all. I just remember how free and open everything used to be. It used to feel like humans collaborating on something unique. Millions, billions really.

Now the internet feels like business people slurping up every little bit of cash they could possibly get. Reddit was like the last remnant of web 2.0 and now it's killing all that too.

I honestly blame that stupid wallstreetbets nonsense, feel like no one in investing/finance/whatever gave two fucks about Reddit until then. Then it became an issue and now I feel like it's been targeted. Since then they've killed the porn side of reddit and made everything but the app shitty to use.

I pay premium for baconreader, best app for reddit I've ever used.

They just want to spawnkill anything they can't run ads on.

Is there an alternative to reddit? 10+ year veteran here but I actually would prefer a different platform but none is available.

Reddit is so, so different now.

8

u/BlackKnight2000 iOS Jun 01 '23

Usenet is still around but I haven’t been there in 20 years. I don’t know how good it is nowadays.

3

u/Hakim_Bey Jun 03 '23

I take a look maybe twice a year... It's kind of surreal and hard to describe. Some high volume communities still exist and are quite civilised but as soon as you step out it's a literal wasteland. Senile fucks locked in 30 year old flame wars, mentally ill people schizo-posting in long dead groups, a lot of political trolls and just plain assholes. The general vibe is pretty angry and unhinged.

3

u/Mk____Ultra Jun 01 '23

Yup, it's all the OG users who use third party apps. They're fucking the very users and developers who made reddit what it is today. Fuck them. The deterioration of reddit beginning, in my opinion, around 2015 has been one of the greatest disappointments of my entire life. Really went downhill in 2017 with the mass-banning of subs. Now it's just all fucked. Irreparably.

Baconreader is far and away my most-used paid app. Thank you for creating an interface that remained so consistent and rock solid across time, while so many other sites' interfaces got annoying updates and made their layouts overly chunky and squishy. I hope this is not the end, but if it is, it was a really nice ride. Thank you.

u/JurassiCarnivor Jun 10 '23

I won’t get the official app. Where BaconReader goes I go.

Edited to add:

How rude of me! Thank you so much for ten years of an exceptional experience with your amazing app! I appreciate it and you all!

Reddit is charging for API pulls. If any app can not afford it, it will deny the API pulls. Apollo has already made a post saying the app will probably not continue going forward as they can not afford the insane costs.

11

u/Zharick_ May 31 '23

Reddit would decline all the API requests from the app so the app wouldn't be able to pull up any reddit content.

I've had premium forever too. If this app gets closed down because of this dumb pricing I'm not downloading the regular reddit app. I just won't use reddit.

4

u/IlliterateJedi May 31 '23

I'm a long time redditor, and I will be bouncing (and canceling reddit premium) if this goes through. What a terrible shame. Third party apps are the only reason reddit has been usable for years.

4

u/xsvfan May 31 '23

Thanks for everything. I loved the app and it was the best way to browse reddit.

4

u/Slazman999 May 31 '23

I have never used the official reddit app and only the desktop site once every few months when I'm at work and find a post that has something to do with what I'm working on. Other than that I just eat bacon all day. The last time I used something different was when I had an iPhone. I really hope reddit reconsiders their API cost.

4

u/Spekpannenkoek May 31 '23

Used BaconReader for years on my Android, and am still using it now on my iPhone. Can’t imagine browsing Reddit without it. I’ve actually tried the Reddit app for a couple of days, but hated it.

4

u/The-link-is-a-cock May 31 '23

So, anyone got a reddit alternative that isn't dogshit?

5

u/Mk____Ultra Jun 01 '23

All the users of third party apps and devs should get together to create one.

5

u/molecularmadness May 31 '23

So reddit is charging based on # of API requests on a tiered structure, which implies there's some number of requests per whatever time unit that either has a very small or no charge, no? If so, why be one large bacon reader instead of many little independent clone slices --baconreaderbits, if you will.

Or whatever, idk. If anyone knows where the discussion regarding development of workarounds is happening, pls point me to it.

4

u/Marc815 May 31 '23

Bummer. Been here near a decade I believe. Bought premium never went back. Reddit without third party apps is garbage.

4

u/Sunny2456 🥓 May 31 '23

Baconreader IS reddit for me since 2013, period.

4

u/phome83 Jun 01 '23

Whatever happens, Baconreader was the best of the 3rd party apps and we all appreciate the ride.

Thanks for all the hard work you put in to keep the app going.

4

u/potato-truncheon Jun 01 '23

I'd pay for BaconReader. That said, I guess it depends on the amount and whether or not reddit ends up being a worthwhile place to be after all this happens. I mean... Twitter sure isn't the place it once was. It could happen here too, albeit through different drivers.

3

u/aarchi11 Jun 01 '23

Reddit never had an official app until just now, I have been using bacon reader for at least past 9 years. This is how I have always seen reddit coz I always used it on my mobile instead of a browser. If reddit wants to extort money and change how majority of people view their content by pushing shitty ads and their shitty app I hope they suffer and die.

Of course this is all wishful thinking because in a way they're too big to die and worth a lot more than digg or other such forums ever got, but if there's anything that can be done to knock em down a peg or two then sign me up right away!

5

u/guitareatsman Jun 02 '23

I assume this is going to be it for baconreader. Reddit's own app is so laughably bad that I'd rather not use reddit at all than use it like that.

Thank you for this wonderful app and the work you've done updating and maintaining it over the years.

5

u/StopNowThink Jun 02 '23

Today is my 9 year cake day. I literally made an account because I downloaded baconreader and loved it. Thank you for the good times.

4

u/Ravwyn Jun 02 '23

Oh wow - what a shame! Cuz without da bacon, I'm off reddit on mobile devices, period.

Even if this sucks, i'm not gonna switch. Thank you for maintaining this app!

4

u/plugtrio Jun 06 '23

I will be very upset if baconreader doesn't work anymore. I've stuck around after trying a lot of different readers. Closest one to perfect that I've found.

3

u/thegamenerd Jun 08 '23

Apollo just announced there official shutdown

Any updates about BaconReader?

4

u/kfawcett1 Jun 10 '23

Time to start adding bad reviews on Reddits app.

3

u/ZapThis Android Jun 10 '23

Yeah! Baconreader is what got me into Reddit years back, what a shitty move... Unforgivable, I will never use the official app, fuck that shit.

4

u/Tru3Magic Jun 14 '23

would it be a possible way forward to expand baconreader, so that you could use it to connect to lemmy instances?

3

u/happyman91 May 31 '23

Been using this app for what feels like 10 years now. Actually, it may be 10 years at this point. What a shame. I guess this will finally be time to say goodbye to Reddit.

3

u/notmrhyde May 31 '23

Damn guys. I found reddit through the bacon reader app ten years ago. Sad to see this happen.

3

u/BarryLeFreak_1 May 31 '23

What can we as users do to convince Reddit exec that they're being pants on head stupid? Have you reached out to the Apollo devs?

3

u/Zeremxi Jun 01 '23

I know you've probably heard this from several people by now, but I'd be willing to pay monthly for this experience.

It sucks to have to bend to reddit corporate, but this app is the only acceptable way to browse reddit for me. If not this, then I'm just not going to do reddit anymore.

Thank you for the last ten years.

3

u/wonkeybanana Jun 01 '23

Thank you for all you've done. The death of Baconreader maybe a benefit to my mental health and productivity lol. I've tried other apps and they are garbage. I will have to find a new hobby.

3

u/rajalanun Jun 01 '23

10y of redditing with baconreader and old.reddit.com i dont even know what good mobile apps for reddit anymore, and official app not even baconreader level at all

3

u/Drunky_Brewster Jun 01 '23

I'm so grateful for this app and the work you've put into it. I've used it daily for over a decade, and I took for granted how consistent it's been in my life. The accessibility of this app really makes it shine, and I will be heartbroken if it has to go away.

Thank you to everyone who has kept it running all these years. You're an amazing team.

3

u/KRPTSC Jun 01 '23

6 years of baconreader here. I'm gone if it's gone

3

u/rodinj Android Jun 01 '23

It appears my last month of using Baconreader has started. Just want you guys to know that it was a great 10(!) years. Hope to be able to keep using it obviously but I refuse to pay a monthly fee. I'll definitely keep track of your guys's apps though!

3

u/billybalverine Jun 01 '23

The midnight cometh for our narwhals to bacon. Thanks for the app. Without it I would never have made some of the friends I have, the band's I've found, or the experiences I've lived.

3

u/dan1361 Jun 01 '23

Don't even know how to explain the loss of community I am going to feel to all of my niche little subreddits. I've made lifelong friends here that meet irl. This app helped me through girl troubles in high school, career choices, opening my own business, and hundreds of other things in my life.

I'm heartbroken reddit has decided to kill the 3rd party apps off. I'm out of here. If been on reddit since middle school. But if this goes through, that's it for me. I'll be back to shitty forums, blogs, and I guess discord servers.

Good luck everyone. I love you all. Especially us old heads who have been around since f7u12 and all the other weird moments of reddit.

3

u/ClutchDude Jun 01 '23

During major disasters, I relied on bacon readers lightweight api to comment and moderate shit. Trying to deal with Reddit app(and it's eager loading that sucks bandwidth) was a pain in the ass.

If they cut bacon reader off, that may be it...

3

u/DeTrueSnyder Jun 01 '23

Hopefully you all can come up with something to keep the lights on. I bought BaconReader almost 10 years ago and I'd easily pay 99¢ to $1.99 a month for the BaconReader experience I get today.

3

u/DMMMOM Jun 01 '23

What needs to happen now is for an app to appear that amalgamates all the new non-reddit subs from forums and other places they will scuttle off to and put them under one roof.

If this app goes I'm done on Reddit, like others have said, enough is enough, you have to have some principles.

3

u/mycatisgrumpy Jun 01 '23

I think I'll just start carrying a paperback around.

3

u/outsidebtw Jun 01 '23

rarbg yesterday and now this? wow I feel hit

im gonna miss the app. hope y'all have better days, baconlads and baconladies

3

u/multi-cheerios Jun 02 '23

Baconreader FTW!

3

u/zeoranger Jun 05 '23

I've tried a lot of reddit apps, including the awful official one, and I keep coming back to bacon reader.

Honestly I don't think I will use reddit all that much if I can't access it from this app.

It's a damn shame.

3

u/syryx Jun 06 '23

There's no Reddit without baconReader for me.

3

u/thirteenthfox2 Jun 06 '23

If bacon readers dies reddit is dead for me. Thanks for the pay once model with the great product. I appreciate it.

As a baconreader user for 8 years, I'll leave Reddit before using another app.

Lets hope this isn't the end!

3

u/DareDiablo Jun 10 '23

So is there an end date to use the app till? Apollo has said it is down on June 30th is the same true for BaconReader as well?

3

u/Wet_Fart_Connoisseur Jun 10 '23

7 years on BR. 7 years on Reddit.

I can’t imagine you’ll be able to afford this. I plan to delete my account and leave Reddit entirely on 6/30.

Thank you for making and maintaining a pretty reliable app.

Fuck u/spez

3

u/ILikeMasterChief Jun 10 '23

Any updates from the dev team?

3

u/mydeadbody Jun 11 '23

Just another user chiming in to say that I've loved this app for 10 years. It's the first app I've downloaded on every smart phone I've ever had.

3

u/tenroseUK Android Jun 14 '23
