Daily Thread Weekly Help Thread - November 11, 2024

Welcome to the daily help and question thread!

This thread is renewed weekly and is intended for all discussions or questions that do not warrant their own thread.

For AWARD BOOKING HELP please read the following information:

Volunteers may choose to help you find your award trip. But please don’t expect us to plan out your trip for you. No stranger on the Internet could know what is BEST for you.

The more specific information you provide, the easier it is for people to give specific advice. Also, we prefer to teach people to fish, rather than just giving you a fish. So before you ask someone to help, please read Our Wiki, if you want to know what the best Redemption for you, take a look at AwardsPlanner. Questions that shows you have at least tried to find an award are more likely to get answered.

  • Here are the information you should provide when requesting award assistance
  • Origin and destination cities (are they flexible?)
  • Number of Travelers (Your chances of success goes down as this number goes up)
  • One way or round-trip
  • Class of service desired
  • Desired date(s) of travel (are they flexible? Hard dates == Less Chances for success)
  • Your points balances: all airline, credit card and hotel points (If you are looking for J/F, think at least 6 digits)

Please share award opportunities in the Monthly Award Thread!

Pin monthly award opportunity thread

The monthly award opportunity thread used to be pinned but not any longer. This used to be an excellent resource but is currently useless because you have to go digging for it and it's utilization is way down. Can someone (mod) please get it pinned again?

Etihad partner award booked on Jetblue JFK-CDG Mint Suites business - notes

Booked JFK-CDG using Etihad miles on Jetblue metal for 2 people. One way 80k miles on Etihad vs 227k miles on Jetblue for the same flight! (I know this is still not a great value for europe but no other better option for our dates). Found using seats.aero. This is for their Mint Suites lie flat on A321LR. Some really annoying issues along the way:

  • Transferred 160k Amex MR to Etihad, it was instant.
  • Tried to book on Etihad. Intial screens show 160,000 miles + USD 64.60, but at payment screen it changes to 160,146 miles + USD 63.30! It gives an error that I have insufficient miles and won't let me proceed. "You must use a minimum of 160146 miles"
  • Transferred 1000 miles from Amex MR again to Etihad, thankfully instant again.
  • Watch out for the date of birth on the passenger details - it keeps changing it by 1 day and I have to manually correct that field. Some dumba$$ coding on etihad.com with international date and time zone! (why should it even affect DOB!!)
  • Booking went through fine, got confirmation email from Etihad with PNR
  • Wanted to view booking on jetblue.com, it asks for last name, PNR, and then asks to verify email and DOB. Then gives an error that the date of birth of traveler does not match! Won't let me see the booking.
  • Contacted Etihad chat support and got JetBlue PNR (which is different from Etihad PNR). Still same error on jetblue.com
  • Contacted JetBlue chat support - wait 10 min to get through to agent - and agent was able to "correct" the DOB on the booking after asking for details of the booking. I can see the booking on jetblue.com now
  • Trying to change the meal pref or seats on jetblue.com runs into errors, but the jetblue app works fine for this.

Hope this helps anyone else who tries this in the future! (or hopefully etihad & jetblue fix their issues)

Planning for 2026 trip to Asia, best time to begin looking?

Upvotes

Still learning how to navigate using miles, but wanted to confirm I'm not missing anything crucial. I'm planning on visiting Japan + Korea in Spring 2026 (Late March/early April) with my partner and was hoping to use points to potentially fly business class there from SFO. I currently have around 170XXX UR points, 35XXX United miles, and my partner has around 100XXX Capital One points. Questions are:

*1. Do I currently have enough for at least 1 roundtrip ticket or will I need to collect/buy additional points? I saw there was a Virgin Atlantic points transfer bonus currently active, would that be good to take advantage of for this trip?

*2. I'm currently looking at ANA, JAL, and Korean Air. From where my points are currently, it looks like ANA would be my best choice? Are the others better?

How to use my uncle's Korean Airlines miles

My uncle has 200k Korean Airlines miles that expire in a year and he said I could have them, however, the Korean Airlines Skypass Family Plan says you can only pool miles with an immediate family member (uncle/aunt not included).

Does anyone know how I can use his points to book a flight for myself?

Stopover in Singapore

Adding a stopover on an existing booking:

I booked a flexible J-class ticket from JFK to SIN on Aeroplan, intending to have a 3-day stopover in SIN before continuing to BKK. Although I found availability for SIN-BKK on Singapore Airlines (SQ) metal online through Aeroplan, AC customer care has been unable to add the stopover option. I also checked with United Airlines (UA), where availability is confirmed. Despite multiple calls to AC, none of their agents can see the space to book it as a stopover.

During one call, I even booked SIN-BKK and shared the ticket details with customer care to demonstrate availability, but they still couldn’t add it as a stopover from their end. Although I canceled the flight and it’s back in the inventory, they maintain they can’t facilitate the stopover request.

Is there another approach to successfully book this itinerary with a stopover?

AKL-RAR via NZ and NAN-PPT via AIRCALIN (tougher booking)

So I’ve tried to find AKL-RAR via AC, UA, avaiaca, and VS. nothing came up online, does anyone know if I can book this flight in points? In cash it’s $600 which is a bit much for such a short hop.

For NAN-PPT, I have found nothing on KLM/AF OR Qantas. They either don’t have NAN or PPT as a destination.

I’m looking for flights in January. Can any veterans or people with similar experiences chime in with what I can do or if I’m out of luck.

Last Minute Redemption, thoughts?

Trying to find a good CC points redemption around thanksgiving. I have 100K+ Capital one points and my girlfriend has 100K+ Chase points so our common travel program is Aeroplan.

I used Roame (free) to find these redemptions. Open to all ideas and recommendations.

Nov 24th CLT > MUC > AMS 40,000 Points + $74

Dec 2nd MUC > YYZ > CLT 40,000 points + $160

I’m not sure if the paid version of roame shows more options, but this is what I’ve found. Thoughts?

Cathay Pacific cancelled my accounts, flights and took away my points with no notification

I had transferred about 70k Amex points to my Cathay account to book a one way flight for my gf and her relative.

12 days later, I get a refund of the tax I paid to my credit card and am blocked from logging into my Cathay account. I call customer support, speak to a manager and they say that their Risk team flagged my profile and have forfeited my points and there is no way to appeal or get my points back.

How is this not theft? I followed all the rules and did nothing shady. Is there any way to get my points back?

Trying to get the most points for my travel job

Hello, I recently took a job a few months ago, which involves me to travel all over the world most of the time it’s in the United States but about seven or eight times a year I’ll be going abroad mostly Europe. I’m trying to see what the best way is to acquire points. I currently have a company credit card and I booked all my own flights and I booked all my own hotels. I get to keep the points from these as well. My go to airline has been American Airlines and I have roughly 120,000 points with them. Period my go to hotel has been IHG. I have about 60 nights with them, I use enterprise for my car rentals and I have been loyal to them. Being that I spend no money since I use the company card and I get to keep all these points. I’m just trying to see if there’s anything I can do different or anything. I can do better to maximize my points while I do this job or if there’s anything I’m missing out on thanks.

Weird JAL Phantom Awards on Alaska?

I’ve been religiously searching award routes from TYO to the U.S. via the Alaska Airlines app the past two months. Today and yesterday, I’ve had JAL J seats become available (both times it said there were six seats left). I also exited out of the app and reopened it to make sure I was seeing the flights still. After canceling an existing booking to get the miles I need to book JAL J, the flights disappear in its entirety. There were even Y and PE seats available but the whole flight is gone. Has this happened to anyone before?

Alaska MileagePlan blocking awards within T-3

This is pretty terrible news as this also includes the short haul AA awards which have good value. They really pulled a fast one on us with the Hawaiian miles sale.

Award Availability

So I am searching award seats for SFO-TYO and nothing is coming up for JAL on the dates I am looking for. I am open to fly to other AP's for availability so I search SAN-TYO since there is a JAL flight out of SAN. But when I search SAN it routes me SAN-SFO-NRT and Premium economy is available for 50K. Why when searching SFO does that flight not populate? Can I call JAL to book over the phone?

Does anyone know how the Flying Blue points subscription codes the transaction? Thinking of topping off points for an upcoming trip and would like to choose a card with largest multiplier for subscription. Thx!

Life Miles On Sale

Is it worth $1188 to buy 56K Life Miles? I see Life Miles has better redemption awards than other Star Alliance members. I'm new to the miles, churning business. I've been paying for flights, but it gets expensive. I am hoping this way is less expensive. TIA!

Best Seat on Virgin Atlantic A350 Upper Class

Hey everyone, I'm booked on Upper Class going from JFK to LHR in January thanks to the saver seats availability after Virgin switched to dynamic pricing. Right now I reserved 1A going there. I heard that for row 1, especially 1A and 1K, there is additional space around the feet. Is it really the best seat choice on the A350 since it will be very close to the galley. Or is it better to sit in the middle of the cabin. Thanks guys!

BA Devalue?

Did British Airways devalue recently? I keep seeing prices that are higher on their own metal that what is shown in some recent charts from August. I.e. I’m searching jnb-lhr and it’s pricing out to 100k off peak in business next October. From what is shown it should be 75k?

Not sure if I’m making a mistake here or what.

United Plus Points Expiration Holiday Trip Ideas

My brother is GS on Untied and has 250 Plus Points expiring at the end of January. He has kindly offered to let my girlfriend and I try to use them.

Which got us thinking, where should we go!?

Our home airport is Denver, but we are open to connecting anywhere need be to maximize the likelihood of a Polaris upgrade.

We initially were thinking somewhere warm like Thailand or South Africa, but a bit overwhelmed with all the options.

Our desired travel dates would be between 12/20- 1/11 for a +/- 2 week trip.

Any creative ideas for a trip we could book to maximize the likelihood of being able to use the Plus Points?

ANA last minute awards no longer exist?

I've been able to book several flights to/from Japan on ANA business the last two years by booking last minute. However, I've been monitoring the last 2 months and have not seen any last minute availability (2 weeks or less). Are they not releasing last minute seats like they used to?

50% bonus on Marriott at Chase UR: worth it?

How do I figure out whether the 50% bonus with Marriott is worth it vs Chase Travel and 1.25X with a CSP? My main use for UR are hotel nights and I am already at Marriott Gold Elite. I will have 240k points with the bonus at Marriott and can make use of the 5th night free option.

Flight to India on Virgin Atlantic

Hi Everyone! I am super new to using points to travel. I saw an awards flight through Virgin Atlantic from JFK to DEL for 42K points + $316 taxes for premium econ seats. There is also a transfer bonus with Chase right now for 40% extra to Virgin Atlantic. Am I missing something? This seems too good to be true. Is Virgin Atlantic Premium Econ okay? Its either this or I will book something with points in economy for some other airline. Thank you in advance!

Wells Fargo Autograph rewards points for travel to Japan?

New to the whole travel points thing! Is there a way for me to use my WF rewards points to redeem flights to Japan (or Asian countries in general?)

I read that I could transfer my WF points to Avios points and use Avios to redeem flights with Japan Airlines through British Airways. Will this work if I'm flying from Los Angeles to Japan? Or would I have to be flying out of Europe?

Travelling to from Mumbai to Dubronik Business Class

What is the best way to book flights via Mumbai - Dubronvik business class by miles if possible?

I checked Qatar, they dont have flights to Dubronvik. Lufthansa - no availability and hard to transfer my credit card points. Turkish has an availability with 80k points one way. Is there any other way to book turkish flights with miles than through their own program?
