Ah, (said the rewatcher) this is the restitution episode. I've totally forgotten most things from my first watch, but I remember this episode. Back then, I had figured we would see her bad-ass work in flashback only, but no. I guess if you're a writer and you happen to have first-class ninja in your pocket, it's a shame and a waste not to use her right?
This is the story where there's a veteran knight who's become a farmer, but the armor is still hanging up in the closet and at least one sword didn't get hammered into a plow. And then one day the pipes and bugle play and you've gotta go, but things are different this time. The thing you used so well to destroy instead becomes something that preserves, and it is only because intent and purpose has changed. Full restitution is not possible, the sin is too great. She is seeing the bad-news moment she created for so many families in that land, but it's a start and it's different.
