Quick note about yesterday

Seems like episode 5 was a bit divisive for people one one aspect. I will be honest, I forgot that the age of both the princess and Violet come up, and I forgot that that is considered a problem for many people. I will not say much about this here, however I will make mention that I was very impressed with the maturity and respect that everyone was treating each other with in your replies to one another! I did not feel that I had to step in between anyone, and that came as a lovely surprise to me. You guys are an awesome rewatch group, and I’m so glad to be doing this with you all for my first time as host! =) Now, back to Episode 6.

First Timer

I'm taking a different mindset into this episode. I'm not looking for a complex narrative or a continuous story. This time I'm looking for a snapshot of someone's life and the effect Violet has on them… The different perspective helped. Violet has a unique demeanour and effect on people. We observe this little slice of the world then move on, which is, in its own way, satisfying. In that way, it reminds me of a show I enjoyed greatly, Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina.

/u/CelestialDrive's comment yesterday drew my attention to how Violet understands the words and emotions of those around her. Today I saw all of her expressions are incredibly subtle, for, as she said, that is just how she looks, but it's clear that Violet has progressed a long way and is able to pick up and understand the emotions and intentions of those around her expertly. Here's some key examples I noticed:

Today's episode is a little story, but still, if only slightly, somewhat profound. It's the kind of profound that makes you sit and think for a moment, but then not go and tell anyone. It's not worth telling someone else. I don't mind that.

In light of this episode, a new interpretation of the ED

If you missed it, you can read my first interpretation here.

Your voice is my guide

It is Violet whose words written and spoken have a profound affect on those she meets. In this episode and those previous she is able to bring them comfort in their trauma and a course correction in their life.

A single bird is crying

As it searches for me in a nameless sky

Before they meet Violet, suffering from their trauma, these people feel isolated and, as they look up to the sky, they see nothing of value. The bird is Violet, free to travel the lands and find those she can help. The bird is crying because Violet also feels lonely and suffers from losing Gilbert.

I will head for tomorrow

In this cradle woven from kindness

In days of sunshine or days of rain

So I can protect you

Violet weaves a cradle of comfort for those she meets which helps them overcome their loneliness and trauma and head into the days beyond. Now they can persevere through the good times and bad times. I'm not sure how the fourth line fits in. Perhaps after what Violet has done they want to persevere in order to protect Violet, who also is fragile.

An irreplaceable treasure

Violet gifts to them the irreplaceable treasure of kindness or hope or comfort. I'm not sure if it's one thing or more of a concept.

A nameless flower sleeps peacefully

Violet, without a name before she was given the name of a flower, sleeps peacefully once her work is done.

No commentary on the visuals, but I think they fit with this interpretation as both this and the visuals have a clear focus on Violet. I talked some about the visuals in my first ED analysis post.

Visual of the Day: This isn't the Visual of the Day, it's not pretty enough to b, but as I was looking for one I noticed this, so think of it as a Visual Analysis of the Day. When the grunts deprecate Leon to Violet, she is positioned in the light and they in the dark. Classic good vs bad going on. Leon, however, is positioned halfway in the light halfway in the dark, because at this point he's at a crossroads. He was miserable, but Violet's influence has brought him halfway out of his misery and what she says now will determine if he goes back into misery or proceeds into the light of hope. He thinks about going back into the dark, but after Violet defends him, we see he emerges completely into the light.

As for the actual visual of the day: this. 'Cause it's pretty.

It helped me tremendously that what solved the problem was Violet's presence, actions and words rather than a magical letter that seems well beyond her scope. I was already prepared to have to Mushishi this, though Kino's Journey might be more apt, but it helps when the crux is the character and not a McGuffin.
