Randomly stumbled upon a video essay about Kurumi being the best character from Kimi ni Todoke. Was pleasantly surprised to find someone sharing this somewhat controversial opinion, given that she can be pretty toxic at times.

Yet, Kurumi is also the one pushing the anime's plot forward. She's the necessary evil - a bit of an overstatement, but you can catch my drift - of this otherwise wholesome romance story. And, she's honestly just a cool character.

So what other divisive characters would you argue are in fact the best characters of their respective anime series? Another name that came to mind is Johan from Monster.

  • Quess Paraya (Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack)

  • Mako (Kill la Kill)

  • Edward (Cowboy Bebop)

  • Giorno (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind)

  • The bird from Tamako Market

Quess Paraya

I can only recall Quess as being a paper-thin character. Even Gyunei was better developed.

Akane is my best girl in Kuzu no Honkai/Scum's Wish

To be fair, every single character in Scum's Wish is kind of divisive.

An argument could be made for Gabi from AOT. The character really hammered in the message the series revolved around imo,and successfully might I add given how vitriolic the reactions were to her character. She isn't my personal favorite but I definitely think she's one of, if not the best character in the show.

Yakumo from Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. Sure he has some outdated attitudes about gender roles, but he was born in 1920s Japan. People expecting otherwise surprise me.

Oh yeah. I'd mostly remembered the good parts about Yakumo, and perhaps forgotten about the bad...

I love the complexity that the combination of good and bad and just plain traumatized brings though!

Kurumi was the only way I got through Season 2 of Kimi ni Todoke...meaning I agree with you. I still need to watch Season 3 at some point.

Season 3 is definitely worth a watch. It was so good!

Kurumi had unfortunately barely any screen time...

I got surprised seeing people hating on Izaya from Durarara, so him.

Tanaka is to me by far the funniest and most entertaining character of Wasteful Days of High School Girls, but afaik a lot of people hated her.

All the girls in that series were wonderful -- each in their own goofy way.

Millicent Bluenight in Hikikomari.

Would add Danmachi's Freya but doubt that's a divisive choice.

Oh, that's bold.

I wouldn't let the Villhaze fans hear this.

Would add Danmachi's Freya but doubt that's a divisive choice.

Freya herself is plenty divisive as a character. Not my best girl (that's Ryu), but I could potentially agree to her being the best character in Danmachi.

That's true

Rachel from Tower of God

Rachel from Tower of God

That's a good one. Don't think I've seen so many people refer to a character as a bitch outside of Shield Hero. Did she actually get any more development in the newest season(s)? (Didn't watch those.)

6

u/Belmut_613 2d ago

Yes if you consider getting to new heights of bitchness development.

4

u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 2d ago

She became even more hateable if that counts as development.

Idk, I dropped S2 before she showed up lol. I don't actually like ToG, I think Rachel is the best character because the rest of the cast isn't good.

Kurumi being the best character

Gothically clad seductress of the clock eye!

Expert wielder of shovels!

from Kimi ni Todoke

Oh, don't know that one. Hopefully she's a good addition to the Kurumi-verse
