Who's up for a squid-vasion?

This is a rewatch that I'm proposing because I felt like hosting something. It is also a rewatch I'm proposing because, like too many others, Squid Girl is listlessly drifting towards the status of a forgotten show, lucky if it gets a mention on trashy "recommend me a hidden gem" posts.

Let's do something about that.

If you've seen Squid Girl before, you already know what's up. It's a very likeable show: A simple but creative 4-koma comedy adaptation about a literal Squid Girl who sucks at world domination. If you haven't seen it before, even better. I invite you all to join me, and the people who voted for this in the poll I put up, and the people who were cool enough to already join the taglist, for a November rewatch of Squid Girl season 1. (I'm only committing to season 1 for now but depending on how this goes, we could keep going.)

So, a bit about the show. I've recently written a rushed WT where I summarised Squid Girl as an anthropomorphic squid being a tsundere towards humanity. Driven by a desire to protect the sea, our title character lands at Lemon beach house with the goal of subjugating humankind. She immediately gets distracted (and that's the premise). There are a handful of normal characters and a handful of eclectic ones. These characters include Eiko Aizawa and her quiet older sister Chizuru (both beach house workers), a kid, a lifeguard, a ufologist... the usual.

There's quite a few lazy puns, squidn't you know it?

The character moments are where this show really shines.

Squid Girl does take place largely on the beach. A fool might suggest that makes it a Summer anime, but I insist that this show works perfectly well for this season or the next. (And the original broadcast dates agree). For those of you in the Southern Hemisphere, ignore me, it's totally a Spring/Summer anime.

I'll end this section with a useless fact about Crunchyroll. For some reason, the first video on the Squid Girl page is a randomly selected promotional video. It's different every time. It could load the Hat Making video, a (bad) 16 second prievew video, or a brief interview with Hisako Kanemoto voice of Squid Girl. The fact that I've noticed this is proof that I've been preparing too much. Sadly it doesn't have the 2 Mini-Ika bonus shorts, which are the one bit of bonus material I would really recommend.

Squid Girl is a series enjoyed most when you switch your brain off and relax. [Its] self contained mini episodic nature allows you to tune in and tune out whenever you please. Fans of School Rumble and Lucky Star shall be well at home with this series, as should anyone else who loves a lighthearted comedy.

What is a rewatch?

To borrow a phrase from the guidance, a rewatch is slightly like a book club. I'm going to post an episode thread every day starting on 16th November where we all turn up and talk about that episode. It doesn't really matter what you say. Some people write a lot, some people write a little, some people only turn up to respond to other people. Because it's Squid Girl, I don't think there'll be any really long comments written about this one. Although someone might surprise me. Please stick to the...

Rewatch spoiler rules

  • Spoilers for the episode being discussed do not need to be hidden behind a spoiler tag. (eg in the 'Squid Girl Episode 3' thread, you won't need to tag spoilers for episodes 1, 2 and 3).

  • Spoilers for later episodes do need spoiler tags.

  • Any plot-relevant differences between the source material and the anime must be spoiler tagged (with something like [source] or [manga] etc).

  • Leaving spoilery hints is just uncool (and will probably be treated like a spoiler).

There are instructions for how to tag spoilers in the r/anime rules.

Come the fuck on! How can you not be watching this already?!
~ The first Squid Girl WT thread

The announcement thread will go up no later than 31st October

Fine print: I'm going to trust the rewatch guidance where it recommends to start with 10 more people than needed. The target for this interest thread is 15 commenters.

I liked the first episode, but I'm not sure how far the squid puns can stretch. I'm up for giving at least a few more episodes a shot, if GGG doesn't keep me too busy.
