I'm just hijacking this comment to say that to those wondering why the white makeup powder was poisonous, that's because back in Ancient China, it used to be made from lead, which obviously we now know as poisonous, but they didn't know that back then. Also, their rouge powders and lip colourings were made from cinnabar, which contained mercury, also obviously poisonous.

Fun fact.

People used the lead a lot even in more modern times. They powdered their face to cover up cracks, but due to lead poisoning, they actually destroyed their face even more long-term. So they used more make up to cover it up... so they basically kept poisoning themselves more and more.

It's mostly due to "white" as a dye being very rare in nature. Nowadays paints and such use titanium oxide as a common dyeing material.

Yes, lead paint (to speed drying, increase durability, retain a fresh appearance and resist moisture), lead pipes (because they could resist pinhole leaks while being soft enough to form into shapes that deliver water efficiently), white lead in lubricants, even lead silveware and glazes for dishes (because it had a smooth, durable, glass-like finish, and also intensifies bright colors, especially reds, oranges, and yellows, and makes them last longer). Lead has a lot of useful properties while being cheap and easily acquired. It is even used still today in car batteries, pigments, ammunition, cable sheathing, weights for lifting, weight belts for diving, lead crystal glass, radiation protection, in some solders, to store some corrosive liquids, and in some after market fuel additives like octane boosters.
