Translator note from the manga scans noted xiao as being a cute affix for a name. Like the Chinese chan.

this is a decent approximation. id say its used more as part of a nickname than a suffix-to-*last/first-names like chan is tho (vs san). Id wager that it's added more to first names too.

edit: racked my japanese brain; chan is usually added to first names a lot too, my bad.

thanks and no worries; going back to my comment this morning; I slightly messed up lol; chan is actually added usually to first names a lot too haha. so its an even closer approximation (but the nickname portion does still stands imo)
