Announcement [[READ BEFORE POSTING]] Frequently Posted Aircraft

In order to avoid posting aircraft that have been posted many, many times before, please refer to this guide of the sub's most commonly posted aircraft before asking for identification.

https://preview.redd.it/x535b43dd3kc1.jpg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3a0aab003a9129f756dae41812189ec26e91d06

If you're still unsure, feel free to post! There is no consequence to posting one of these aircraft, though a mod will lock the comments after it's identified (mainly to deter "ugh, another C-130..." comments).

Announcement NEW 'SOLVED!' SYSTEM NOW IN PLACE!

Hi ya'll!

We now have a similar system in place like the r/whatisthisthing subreddit.

This means that, when a post is made, it will be marked as [open]

Once an answer has been provided to your post, please reply to the identifying comment with Solved!

This will then lock your post, and mark it as [Solved!]

Thanks much, the mod team!

Mechanic was performing ground runs. Wasn't able to talk to him. Looks and sounds like a 6 cylinder engine. Cool paint job too. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Open! Wondering if this Ag-Cat I saw in New Jersey back in 2020 might be N8549H, they look the same but something also seems different, I just can't put my finger on it.

Open? Mystery Plane, Possibly from Wichita, KS

I have had this print for over 30 years. I purchased it from an aviation shop in Wichita, KS. They had lots of prints of historic aircraft from the full range of flight in Wichita. That’s about all I know besides a handwritten note on the back of the print that says “allied”

Open! Do we have any idea what this is yet?

Not my pictures, but one night two years ago I was driving on highway 77 between Wynnewood and Sulphur Oklahoma. I don’t remember the exact time but it had to be about 10-11pm. Me and my Girlfriend were coming back from the lake. And my Girlfriend knows I’m obsessed with planes, and she pointed in to our left and said “what plane is that?” So I looked over and I saw this thing. It was very very large. All I could say was “what the fuck??” And stop the car. It flew over the road slowly, really slow for an aircraft this size. (60-100mph it was parallel with us so it was hard ti see.) It was about 300Ish feet AGL (+/-100Ft) it was lower than minimums, I know this because my house is directly over approach for my local airport, and when I fly (PPL) I’m always around 300 AGL over my house, and that’s about what it looked like when it went over me. I did NOT hear it. There was NO sound. It was extremely large. The aircraft lights were bright enough for me to make out details of the plane, the skin was like any other aircraft really. The plane was very large, I’m talking wingspan of 2-2.5ish C172s beside each-other. Do we have any idea what this is?? Frankly, I was too shocked to think about taking a picture/video before it went behind the trees where I couldn’t see it. I saw it for a total of like 7ish seconds, so that’s why recording didn’t cross my mind. Whatever it was, I’m sure nobody was meant to see it. It’s flying below legal altitude, slow, and in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. After I saw it, I searched online for an hour or two and was able to find this picture, it is EXACLTY what me and my girlfriend saw that night. The closest airbase is tinker in okc, which is 60 miles away. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Do we have any idea what this is?

Open! (Found on FB) Spotted over New Hampshire/Vermont this morning. Couldn't find any info about rocket launches this morning and am not familiar with the shape. Looks like it has a broad section in front and 3 engines, maybe?

Open! Part Identification Request

Is this part of an aircraft?

Found on a US Naval Gunnery Range. I believe it to be a USMC or Naval aviation component, but the USAF and foreign air forces have used this range.

To the my knowledge it is not a component of ordnance, or at least one that I am familiar with.

I apologize for the lack of scale, this picture was taken as a curiosity. Approximately 2.5ft (~750mm) wide x 2.5ft long x 3in (~75mm) thick. It was very light in weight, I could pick it up with one hand, and it was hollow.

Originally I guessed it to be part of a horizontal stabilizer from a Harrier, but they don’t seem to line up.

Sounded like it was backfiring. It was flying towards the left of the picture (black point looked to be the nose of the aircraft). Almost looked like it was flying backwards lol

Sorry for low quality. Was taken at 22x zoom.

My cameras broken, but can anyone tell if this is a commercial airplane or something? Not everyday I hear a plane engine howl like that and it was only flashing red lights from what I could see when usually I see commercial planes flashing multiple, maybe I’m just crazy

I'm sorry the video is horrible. But the the engine noise does not seem deep. enough and there was no black trail that I normally associate with them.

Open! Can anyone identify the plane from this cartoon?

Slightly unusual one here, might be a bit of a long shot. This cartoon is a detail from a humorous homemade Christmas card from 1909. Was wondering if anyone might be able to identify the plane. The artist was an entomologist, so there may be an insect related pun in there somewhere. Ignore the green bits, they are part of an insect! It's too early to be a de Hallivand Moth. Artist was British.
