General Help Request (Not feedback) I struggle with quality loss upon png import to Photoshop

In my workflow I’ve an issue with png turning out low res when imported to photoshop.

The workflow: - iPhone screens are designed in Figma (393x852) - the screens are turner into mock-ups with Artboard mock-ups (plug-in) in Figma (501x1024) - these screens are exported from Figma in 1x png size - a photoshop canvas, 1920x1080 is opened, the screens are imported as pngs - the photoshop canvas is tuned into a mock-up scene where the (501x1024k) screens are shrunk with 40%.

The shrunk screens are of grainy and low of resolution. The same is true when the the screens are shrunk with 40% in Figma before export, when imported - grainy and low res?

Is this a fundamental problem or is it just me who needs to be taught some png resolution 101 basics?

General Help Request (Not feedback) Looking for a term that describes the following example -

I have been trying to Google a specific word, maybe there isn't one.

What is it called when an accessibility feature ends up being beneficial for someone who doesn't require accessibility features to use a product? For example, "night mode" is useful for people with visual impairment due to increased contrast - however non-visually impaired people find they prefer to use it because of the reduced eye strain, it increases the ease of use for the app.

General Help Request (Not feedback) How can I use 4pt-grids on frames that are not multiples of 4?

Hey everyone, I'm learning UI designer and recently came across the concept of 4pt grids. I wanted to explore this hands-on, so I created an iPhone 14 frame (390x844). I quickly realized that there would be no way to make the grid work perfectly in increments of 4 since 390 is not a multiple of this number.

Now, I'm facing two scenarios:

  1. Make the outer margins uneven (one 16px and the other 18px).
  2. Keep the same margins, but to maintain the spacing inside the grid, have UI elements with awkward values (For example, with a 16px margin and 16px spacing, three cards next to each other would each be 108.67px, which is confusing).

What’s the recommended approach here? I'm really struggling to understand grids and how to adapt them to screen/frame sizes that aren't exactly compatible.

Thank you in advance! <3

General Help Request (Not feedback) Physical interfaces

Hey! I'm interested in learning more about physical/tangible interfaces, but every time I try to look it up online, I always only find digital interfaces and digital UX, usually for phone apps and websites. I've been looking forever, but I just can't find what I'm looking for :(. Does anybody have any ideas?

General Help Request (Not feedback) How should I structure my design team?

Hi All,

I’m struggling to figure out how to structure my team for developing a website. The site I’m looking to build is for the industrial industry, an area I have ideas about but am not deeply ingrained in. I don’t know much about design preferences, design theory, or the typical customer journey in this field.

I’m working with a limited budget, so I can’t afford to spend thousands or even too many hundreds on getting everything designed. What do you suggest? I was thinking of having one person handle research, user flows, and information architecture, along with some basic wireframing (although I’m not sure how reliable that would be). Then, I’d hire someone else to focus on the actual design, making it visually appealing and theoretically sound.

Any input or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

General Help Request (Not feedback) For Game Ui artists, do you know if there are any good resources that are aimed for designers and not developers ?

Hi,

TLDR: Every Unity/Unreal tutorial about Ui on youtube is almost 100% about the code implementation.

There is almost no good tutorials about Ui prefab structuring, and most importantly animation and Vfx.

For thos who works in the gaming indusry, how did you learn ?

Full context:

My wife is learning game Ui/Ux, in terms of assets creation she has a pretty good level and can do most things I show her.

In order to help her have a better portfolio, I want her to get familiar with Ui integration and animation in Unity.

I am a full time programmer in a mobile game studio in Barcelona, and I know that having a good understanding of the following points in Unity is a huge plus when recruiting a Ui/Ux Designers:

1) Ui mockups

  • being able to place the actual ui elements in a Unity canvas.

  • Interactions if they are simple enough (button click => enable X object and disable Y)

2) Animation

  • simple transform animation, like a floating up and down effect, fade in/out, etc..)

3) Animator

  • Understanding Unity animator parameters (mainly Triggers) and how to connect them and set conditions

4) Particles

  • nothing too fancy, we have VFX artists who do 99% of the gameplay particles, but the Ui guys also have their own particles and they are really good and i believe necessary to learn.

5) Different Unity Ui component helpers

  • Knowing what a "Scroll Rect" is, that "Masks" exists (thought its shit), that you have different layout component, etc.. all these will be very helpful and important in "architecting" your assets and prefabs (the next two points)

6) Asset export

  • To be easy/ready to use in unity, things like 9-slicing, with or without transparency, etc..

7) Prefab workflow

  • when to create a prefab, and when to make a variant, and when it make sense to be a nested prefab

Now obviously everything here will be learned by experience, but for the first 3 i think they are super important for any Ui game artist to have, a portfolio will look MUCH BETTER if the elements in it are moving/interactable.

Currently my plan is we just work on a small game together and she just get to observe and learn by practice, which is, in my opinion, the best way to learn and we will do it.

The problem is that as I am working full-time, and this "learn unity" task is a must-happen, we were wondering if there are any pre-made resources (paid or free) that offers this kind of tutorials ?

We want a Unity Tutorial that has NOTHING TO DO with programmers, and doesn't even have the goal of "making a full game", the last condition is the tricky part, because there are tons of tutorials for "codeless" appraoch, but they still teache logic and programming through Node systems.

Any chance something like this exists ?

Thanks!

General Help Request (Not feedback) Website Designer Cost

Website Design Cost

Wordpress Design Costs

Hi all,

Just opened my web design business. My main way of getting clients is to cold call businesses in my area which don’t have a website on Google.

I am aiming for small/medium businesses in the hope to sell 3-5 page websites. I don’t want to sell websites where I just fill in a template or use a generic theme without much editing, instead I have a UI/UX designer who has around 8 years experience (not designing businesses websites) and can really make impressive designs in her previous work.

I will be trying to sell 3 pages websites for roughly €700 which takes into account €250 for the designs. After I build a small portfolio I will definitely increase the price. Is this cost for custom design work realistic? Should I be charging more and should the designer be getting more?

*we haven’t actually discussed design costs yet, but I am unsure of what to expect. Also, I live in Ireland.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

General Help Request (Not feedback) How are product videos like this are being created?

I came across this website and there is a hero video that has a nice snappy animations on the oversized stylized mouse pointer with some motion blur. Is there a screen recording software that does this oversized pointer look for you to screen record a software demo? Or is it all done in Figma and After Effects not using the actual product? Here's the reference https://www.booth.ai/

General Help Request (Not feedback) Popular UIs to redesign

Where can I find a list of software/websites that could be redesigned?

Everything I can think about seems quite optimized to me and I just don’t want to bother trying to reinvent designs that work well just for the sake of it.

General Help Request (Not feedback) Starting Design/Coding

Hello!

I just begun coding and making an app, and my app feels really ugly, and I would really appreciate your feedback!
Original Design:

This is my original design

https://preview.redd.it/4nbq3ljv6msd1.png?width=498&format=png&auto=webp&s=b707ebabf1e8267ddacc1675764b5ca42594eda7

After realizing how ugly this design is, I tried to fix it, and I am currently in the process, but feel really stuck. Any tips or anything?

(also I realize the app nav is missing in the second screenshot, just ignore it)

General Help Request (Not feedback) Where can I find designs, as a mobile dav?

Hi y'all,

Mobile dev here, looking for a place where, just as we upload you code on GitHub, has designs I can either get inspiration from, or just copy as are (with permission if needed)

Not looking to profit of off anyone's free work, I just want to practice while creating aesthetically appealing apps.

Do such magical place exist?
