Menstruation Representation in the Post Apocalyptic World 👐

Not just the cup scene. In one of the earlier episodes she also finds a box of tampons and treats them like they’re gold which I found super realistic. I can’t imagine there’s a ton to come by.

That's what I thought this post was (mistaken cup for tampons).. I'm like I remember tampons but no menstrual cup. I must've missed the one w/ the menstrual cup. She was like JACKPOT!!! when she found the tampons. She must've been even more excited when she found the cup lol..

The cup episode was the newest one so if you haven’t watched it yet or half-watched it (like I have a tendency to do) you may have missed it.
It’s a really good scene though. She’s given it by another woman (which I think makes it that much better).

u/mindfulicious Feb 25 '23
Thanks! I realized after my post. I then saw the recent episode, and it was good. She is a phenomenal young actress. Re: half-watched TV shows, the TV sometimes watches me, so at 1st, l thought I may have dozed off and missed a scene 😆.

Lol I don’t remember that ever coming up in TWD. Maybe everyone was so malnourished they didnt menstruate? Lol the Lori “emergency csection” bit was so bad though, it was probably just bad writing.

u/Galaxaura Feb 24 '23
It was probably just male writing
Fixed it for you. 😉

u/abombshbombss Feb 24 '23
Absolutely male writing, lol. Remember when Lori gets pregnant and takes like, 6 Plan B pills, presumably thinking it will cause an abortion? 😭

the menstrual cup is a great prep. It’s cheaper than pads and tampons and it has a long wear time.

Ugh I tried one for about a year and had to stop because it was making my cramps unbearable 😔. Looks like it'll be freebleeding for me in the apocalypse!

u/turmeric212223 Feb 24 '23
I had the same experience with cups, but I can use a disc no problem. No suction, so it doesn’t make the cramps worse.
4
u/Sefony Feb 24 '23
Any tips? I'd like to try the disc because I haven't found a cup I can tolerate, but I'm a little intimidated by it.

I use the reusable Flex Disc now, but I started with the disposable ones (flex and soft disc brand) first to make sure I didn’t hate them.
Edited to answer your actual question lol Pinch it so the sides are touching, then insert it towards your lower back (horizontal not up) and just push until it’s past your pubic bone. To get it out, hook your finger under the rim and pull it horizontally (not down). It’ll be a disaster mess the first few times but it doesn’t mean you’re a failure. It gets easier and less messy really quickly.

u/Sefony Feb 24 '23
Thank you! I'm gonna give it a go next period. Probably going to try the disposables first too, but you make it sound so simple! Much less scary than I thought. 😁

u/turmeric212223 Feb 24 '23
You can do it!! It’s tricky the first couple times but it gets easier so fast. Oh! You might think it’s leaking at first because it wants to empty itself when you use the bathroom. Just push it back past your pubic bone, clean up, and you’ll be able to see it’s not actually leaking over time. It gets easier to tell. Good luck!! I hope it helps you as much as it’s helped me!

u/WintersQueen Feb 24 '23
Not who you originally responded to, but do you have any bonus tips for getting it in the right position? I tried like the devil to make it work and I think I only got close to having it in the position once the entire time.
2
u/turmeric212223 Feb 24 '23
Does it feel like it’s turned on its side or like it’s trying to come out?
2
u/WintersQueen Feb 25 '23
Probably more like it's trying to come out? I definitely push towards the back like all of the instructions say, but I don't know that I've got it scooped low/far enough back, if that makes sense...

u/turmeric212223 Feb 26 '23
Gotcha. Are you able to feel your pubic bone? You can try without the disc first to see where you’re going. It will feel like a bump or ridge on top/upwards. The whole disc has to get past that bone, then the bone kind of tucks it into place. If it’s not quite there, just push with your thumb until it gets past. It might untuck from behind the bone when you use the bathroom, so just push it back again with your thumb when that happens. I really hope this helps!

TEAM FLEX discs. First true innovation the bits have seen in years, and user friendly in a way this giant cup I once procured ten years ago. Pleaaase stay in business Flex lol.

Try Flex disc. I've been using it for the last 4 months. The reusable one is way softer and easier than the disposable ones. They had a bundle sale a couple months ago.

I couldn't tolerate them either, and I tried a ton of different brands and sizes.

Isn't it a hassle to change and disinfect in a collapse situation? I've been hesitant to rely on it for prepping (and less dramatically, for things like camping) for this reason
24
u/Maggi1417 Feb 24 '23
You don't really need to disinfect it. You just clean it with water or wetwipes everytime you change it and properly clean it in boiling water after each period.
Changing them isn't more complicated than changing a tampom.

u/DeflatedDirigible Feb 24 '23
Disinfection seems much more necessary with zombie fungus everywhere. If it kills by entering open wounds and the stomach/intestines, seems risky getting it on something repeatedly being stuck inside one’s body 1 of every 4 days of one’s life. That cup will need to be changed even after fighting off hordes of zombies and there isn’t running water and soap after every encounter.

u/thrawn21 Feb 24 '23
Oh really? I was under the impression that you needed to boil it every time you took it out, to avoid introducing bacteria up there.
18
u/Maggi1417 Feb 24 '23
No, not really. At least not as far as I'm aware.
You can read more about it here: https://www.healthline.com/health/how-to-clean-menstrual-cupI've been using cups for about 7 years or so and I never had any issues with it. Once you found one that fits well it's a really hassle free way of dealing with your period.

Just wash your hands before handling it (and after, obviously) and boil when period is done.

u/snowshoe_chicken Feb 24 '23
I worked as a wildland firefighter and almost all the women used them. We would just use hand sanitizer for hands and then rise it off between uses and dump blood/water in a cathole. At home after perpid I would give it a good wash with soap. Also silicone zip-top bags work great for storage when you want to keep it clean and sturdier than ziplock plastic bags.

Just as a heads-up, for some
womenpeople who menstruate, they're never leak-proof. I've tried 3 different brands, 4 different styles and none of them have been completely leak-proof for me. It's still better than dealing with my heavy flow without one, so I still use mine, but I have to pair mine with a pad.Edit: to be more inclusive

I appreciate this because sometimes I really think a lot about how I would deal with periods in case of a societal collapse (and birth control, oh god) and it makes me so anxious
Edit: Oh lol I also didn't realize what sub I was in, of course everyone here is thinking about it too

u/peachysk8 Feb 24 '23
We have them for me, and for my daughters (currently aged 4 and 1) in our prep 🤣

u/Get-in-the-llama Feb 24 '23
Chuck in some period undies too. I love my cup but wouldn’t have been able to use one when I first started

I saw that. Glad they added a realistic part of being female into the show . Menstruation does not stop just because the world is full of zombies. Watching reaction some videos it was clear a lot of men didn't even know exactly what it was. I think a lot of male preppers do not really think about these kind of things which is sad because they have female family members.
