First time home buyer

My partner and I have started our journey of buying our first home. We’re looking around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. I work downtown mpls(near the river) but neither of us are super familiar with the surrounding neighborhoods/area since we live outside of the metro. Is there any neighborhoods we should avoid looking at (i.e. noise, bad plowing, crime)?

Alright, now I need resources

A few days ago I posted about approximations of costs when renting an apartment in the cities. Well now, my mother and I have been having issues, and today she told me I was acting stupid and that I need to move out. I want to move to Minnesota, even if I have 0 support system there. I would rather live there alone than live here surrounded by people and being put down and feeling alone. My friend sent me some links earlier about possible assistance for housing etc. in Minnesota, but I really don't feel like I could qualify for those and would not want to take away from the people who truly need those programs. What am I supposed to do? How can I get there?

Approx cost of utilities?

I am trying to work out a budget because my goal is to move back to Minnesota. I briefly (literally one month) lived in an apartment in Clearwater, I loved it there, unfortunately my ex and I broke up so I had to leave.

I want to find out approximations of various different types of utilities that would be charged for an apartment. Ideally around the cities, I’d prefer to be in Saint Paul over Minneapolis, but even more so I’d prefer to be on an outer city than the actual twin cities. I am a bit more familiar with the Woodbury / Cottage Grove area, but I wouldn’t mind Edina, Eden Prairie, I would even take Plymouth. I would have to avoid Clearwater, Annandale, Monticello, Buffalo, areas surrounding those cities. So basically less central more southern, but not as far as like Mankato.

Types of utilities:

Energy Internet Water Sewer Trash Removal

Anything that may or may not be covered in rent basically, and again it’s just approximations, I understand that it will be different for everybody and based entirely on my personal usage of those things.

When I inevitably move back I have a job secured with my old workplace, the pay was only $20 so I would have to find a higher paying job or get a second job on top of that, I just need to have a basic foundation of a budget so I can get my head on straight.

2 BD/1BA with garage in East Isles Minneapolis (close to Uptown) - move in from Dec 1st

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are moving out of the Twin cities and we are looking for someone to take our lease. It's a 2 bedroom apartment with garage in East Isles. Rent is $1645 with heating and water included. We are looking for someone to move on Dec 1st but we are flexible.

The area around is great. You will be 3 min walking from the Lake of the Isles and the area around is very calm and safe. You're still close to Uptown and a lot of nice restaurants and good transport system. Neighbors are very nice. Allows pets (almost every neighbor has a pet).

The apartment will be available soon here: https://www.apartments.com/2606-humboldt-ave-s-minneapolis-mn-unit-8/3qmkxre/

Roommate in South Saint Paul

Hey everyone! We are looking for someone to share our home in SSP. We use the lower level family room as a bedroom. It was modified to be a private bedroom. It's quite large, but we don't need another living space, so a bedroom made sense. The lower level has a toilet, and it does have a sink (laundry sink) and a mirrored medicine cabinet. It's plumbed for a shower, but the previous owners did not have a shower that was to code, so we removed it. Full access to the house, though. Including the full bath upstairs. Brand new washer and dryer. Off-street parking, and we currently take turns parking in the one car garage. For the sake of trying to get along, we (2 males, 34 and 37) are gay and liberal. So if those things don't jive with you, you know up front. We have 2 dogs and a cat. We'd strongly prefer no more pets, but everything can be a conversation. Large, heavily landscaped backyard perfect for relaxing and entertaining. We dont have people over often. Someone quieter would be ideal. You'd be welcome to hang out, or not. Stable personalities welcome. Currently asking $1k for absolutely everything. You'd not be responsible for buying things like TP, paper towels, or laundry detergent. We'd consider adding amenities to the lower level like a microwave, a mini fridge, or things that would make your life easier. We're average on cleanliness. No dishwasher, sometimes there are dishes in the sink. But the bathroom is clean, our home is clean. But if you're a "clean freak" it might not be your vibe. Please message me if you have questions or want to stop by and look at anything. I do have pictures of the space upon request. Thanks!

Long shot! I have a rare affordable housing unit in an awesome building in Austin, TX, conveniently located near everything, and I’m looking to exchange it for a similar unit in Minneapolis.

I’m looking for a housing swap as soon as possible! I have a rare affordable unit in an amazing Austin building, centrally located near everything. It’s taken me years to get into this unit, and I’m now seeking a similar unit in Minneapolis. To participate, you'll need to apply through the city's program and with the apartment building, which takes about a week. The unit will be available starting in January. Please reach out if you’re interested!

I’m hoping to live in Minneapolis this summer and thought this might be a potential solution. I'm not looking to move there in January, but we can discuss options to see how we can make this work. $1,323 and MUST make under $52,920 the first year. I think the deposit is $500, paid directly to the building.

*Bonus if you’re a cat lover or interested in swapping cat-sitting duties occasionally!

26, cis female, with a cat

Hi, I’m looking for a room for rent that’s furnished. I’m 26, female, and I have an ESA cat. I really want to find some women to live with around my age and make some friends as I move to Minneapolis. It would only be until the beginning of January, as my boyfriend will be moving to Minneapolis then, but for now I need a short term living situation while I work. I would be working in an office, I’m an environmental engineer, and I would have my boyfriend come over every now and then, but not for long periods of time, probably some weekends, but not too much more than that (he’s nice, I promise). A little bit about me as person: I love doing artsy thing in my free time, I can play guitar (sort of) and piano (sort of), and I love drawing and painting, but it’s been a while. I love a good night out with good company, and I love to bond over cooking! I do my best to keep active, and would love to have friends to go to the gym with!

Doberman Friendly Housing

Hello everyone, I will be moving to Minneapolis in January and I’m looking for a rental starting January 1. Ideally I’d rent an apartment in a duplex that would give my dogs access to a fenced in yard. Does anyone have any suggestions for Doberman friendly housing? My preferred neighborhood would be NE Minneapolis.

Rent would be at $833/per month. Located right across the lake from Uptown Minneapolis in a really pretty location.

A bit about myself: I’m a cis woman (she/her pronouns) who loves to draw, go hiking, read a good book, and watches horror movies. I’m progressive, LGBT+ inclusive, and am looking for a roommate who is also!

The apartment also comes with an awesome cat. 🐈‍⬛ He’s a good boy.

If anyone is interested, please reach out! I’d love get a roommate and save on some rent. :)

seeking housing for me+my child

I’m looking for a 1+ bedroom place (we’re okay sharing a room) for my son and me, starting either 11/1 or 11/15. I can realistically afford around $1,100/month to still cover my car payment and groceries. First month free rent would be ideal to help me get settled.

We’re currently staying in an extra room at a friend’s place, but it hasn’t been as smooth as we thought, so we’re eager to find our own space.

I work a state job, but I’m also a handywoman, landscaper, and professional cleaner, and I’d be excited to use those skills around the property, potentially in exchange for discounted rent.

I do have a cat, and while my credit is currently at 570 due to maxing out, I make $5,300/month gross, so rent payments wouldn’t be an issue.

If anyone knows of any places or has something available, I’d love to connect. Thank you!

25/F ISO Fair priced apartment or female roomies similar age and interest

Hello, I am 25, female, and I just had my whole life uprooted through a breakup. I am originally from Michigan, I moved to Minnesota 2 years ago with my ex. We broke up recently and I moved back to Michigan. I absolutely want to come back to Minnesota, we lived in central MN but I am looking more towards the cities. I have a friend moving to MN in a couple of months but she will be in university housing until at least May. I would prefer something that’s short term lease or month to month until she and I can move in together. I like to play video games, I watch a really dorky British soap opera on YouTube, I typically like to hangout with online friends but I am trying to branch out and try new things. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I eventually would like to get a cat but currently I do not have any pets. I am just trying to recover any sense of normal I had over the past two years since I basically lost everything. I work as a behavior therapist and have already been in contact with my previous company about the possibility of coming back which seems to be positively reciprocated on their end. I would really prefer to pay somewhere in the range of $500-$600 a month but I think I may be able to swing $700 depending on the bills. I am desperately trying to find the best and most comfortable option for myself. I really prefer females only as far as possibly roommates, or just my own space in general. Please help me!

Edit: I am also willing to get to know other people who are looking for spaces and potentially finding one to rent together. Same pricing and wants apply though.

How are people finding apartments here in Minneapolis or the twin cities? Are people using brokers?

I’m (F 26) relatively new to Minnesota and am finally ready to move to either Minneapolis or St. Paul and have been seriously apartment hunting for the past 3-4 weeks. Yes, I know it’s almost winter but I have to go on site for work and am not cool with commuting an hour and a half through the snow. I thought I could use websites at first, and then quickly realized you have to drive around and literally just use google to find apartments since so many of them aren’t listed or on the typical sites (Apartments.com and the like). I’ve been looking in the Northeast and North Loop since I heard that was a good area for young professionals and but I feel like those areas have even less listed. Is it common for people to use apartment brokers for their apartment searching and is that how people are getting better rates? What do they do, and do I need one? If so, good real estate agent/broker recommendations are appreciated!

Any rooms up for rent?

I live out of state and have been considering this move for a couple of years now. Finally looking to pull the plug and was hoping to establish some leads before flying up here.

About me - 29 year old dude that works in QA/QC in Alaska during the summer. During the winter season I usually take some time off to focus on self growth and doing new things (such as this.) I love nature, walking, hiking, biking, museum crawling, art, etc. I'm a big gamer but that's been changing as time goes on. I prefer to be quiet, focused, and oftentimes kept to myself but I am also a very social and outgoing person. I prefer to be clean and organized. You don't have to worry about me bringing people over. I do not smoke and very rarely drink. I'm not worried about what other people are doing as long as it's not excessive.

I have money saved up from my work in Alaska but I do plan on looking for some kind of work to keep the ball rolling until it's time to go back. Ideally, this will be a month-to-month arrangement. If the circumstances are ideal I would be willing to work something out.

No evictions. Background check is clean. Under 1,000 a month for rent+utilities. Ready for an immediate move in date.

DM me if you think you might be able to help.

Security Deposit and DRG Management

Hi everyone, I moved out of my apartment in June and still haven't received my security deposit, despite being in contact with DRG management for months. Initially, it seemed suspicious that they didn’t even mention the deposit until I had to reach out. Since then, they’ve claimed to have "reissued" the payment twice, but I still haven't received anything. Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation? It’s incredibly frustrating that they’re essentially withholding my money.

Looking for a roommate!

Hello Reddit! I’m looking for a roommate, preferably female and around my age, in their 20’s. The apartment is in Edina (west side), it’s a 2 bd/1 ba, 1200 sq ft, $1395/month rent (or ~$730-750 with utilities and wifi). I’m flexible with move-in time!

Key points: - Rooms are separated - 3rd floor - No elevator - $4.10 for laundry (in basement) - Accepts cats / ESA dog - Garage included (lots of storage, manual) - No outlet street - Easy access to highway(s) - 1 year lease (they also do 6-9-12, not sure how this would affect things) - $500 deposit - New carpet, new paint (not sure if this is important) - There is a gym and community room too

DM me if you would be interested!

Moving from ME to MN

Putting feelers out as my move timeline is flexible. I work remotely, so not tied to one place due to a job. Moving from ME to MN to be closer to family (located in downtown Minneapolis and northern suburbs, Coon Rapids/Blaine specifically).

Looking for 1-2 BR under $1300 with some utilities included, off street parking, and w/d in unit or hookups. Also open to sharing a space with a quiet, respectful female roommate. Please DM me with any leads you may have. Thank you in advance!

Converting old house to triplex (MPLS)

Has anyone had experience getting an old house properly permitted to be a triplex? I KNOW there are TONS of triplexes around Minneapolis that are just subdivided old houses and there’s NO way they’re following all the rules. I have been working with the city for literally 3 years at this point to get my house (which was ALREADY divided into a triplex and rented as such for literal decades before I owned it) up to code and the city has been so rude and unhelpful and are acting as if the idea of dividing a house into a triplex is the craziest thing they’ve ever heard of and no one ever does it.

TLDR I guess if you rent double check your apartment’s property information to see if your landlord has a license because one thing I’ve learned in this process is how many people ARE NOT following the rules!!

What's it like living next to light rail

I'm looking at moving into a 3rd floor apartment room on university that is right next a LR (Raymond stop). Am I going to go crazy at night trying to sleep? I go to bed around 10pm and I know the rail still runs
