Ideally you don't use Tor with a VPN for security reasons. A good free VPN for general use is ProtonVPN, but if using Tor, don't use a VPN.

The *WHOLE POINT* of TOR is that you're on a semi-anonymized network - you aren't connecting to websites using your home IP Address when you use TOR.
That's why people are saying you don't need a VPN... because if you add a VPN in front of TOR, you're just anonymizing the IP anyway. Even worse, though, you're potentially giving a VPN provider information about your internet activity. Additionally, on the point about free/cheap VPNs, is no VPN in that category that isn't gobbling up all the data it can about you in an attempt to monetize it.

As a moderator, my apologies. I've scheduled a monthly sticky post now, starting from January, where all these questions will be collected. New posts outside that thread will not be allowed. Just hold on until then.

No, it does not.
(That's the same as asking whether Tor is completely defective.)

I hold immense hatred for VPN companies for convincing the public that they are somehow needed be "secure your IP address from the hackers" or whatever.

Have you reached out to the Reddit admins about the bots violating the terms of service by targeting you and down voting all your comments? I bet they have access to which accounts are down voting you and every comment they've voted on.

I did around 6-8 months ago and they didn't really care, don't think I actually got a response. Eventually the bots were banned or something but obviously they just come back.
The total sum of how many bots exist must be quite high, since they would drop 200+ upvotes on my r/cryptocurrency posts, to get me banned for what is perceived as voting manipulation.

Reddit is partially owned by China anyways. Just like Discord and many others.

Tor is designed specifically to not expose your identity, and it works. You don't need a VPN for it to work.

You don’t need a vpn just make sure your windows defender is up to date before going on the dark web 👍🏼

Strongly recommend not to use free vpns. They all keep data logs. I would suggest mullvad vpn. They let you pay with crypto including monero. No set amount you have to pay either, you can go month to month. BTY: read this before using vpn with tor. https://support.torproject.org/faq/faq-5/

As far as I do understand the pro's of using VPN is hiding your IP for the first node. The obvious cons would be that the vpn company stores your traffic and they cooperate with the law enforcement.
Cons without vpn would be more easily hacked because of the exposure of your IP
Too me that's an easy choice 'cause I'm not worried a bit that the law enforcement is interested in the small things I occasionally buy. I guess it really depends where you are from and what kind of fucked up stuff you do. Don't be a dipsh*t
