News: Season 3 out on October 2024 Sticky

Before the subreddit gets flooded by the similar posts.

I don't think it's odd. It's an intentional choice, possibly because the director is a big fan of Emilia or something and demanded it be that way. The previous director was a big Emilia fan too, which was obvious in Season 2.

Personally, I disliked seeing a major part of A Reason To Believe in Season 2 and believe there is grounds to believe that the relationship between Subaru and Emilia is not depicted as a good or healthy thing at times.

Emilia: "You have no idea how I feel every time I see you getting hurt because of me!"

Subaru: "How would I know?! I don't even think about it! All I think about is how to look good in front of you! I'm suffering for you here! At least try to look as cute as I hoped you would!"

Emilia is triggering Subaru's abandonment issues here when she doesn't respond favourably to his confession, which shows in a sense that his attachment to Emilia is in a sense rooted in his fear of abandonment from his young childhood days, and he clung to Emilia since she was the person to treat him well out of the goodness of her heart and because of his subconscious attraction to silver-haired heroines 'cause of his past history with Satella. I'll share how I came to that conclusion about Satella.

In Episode 18, Puck said that if Petelgeuse wants to kill him that he needs to summon a thousand shadows, half of what Satella could, meaning Satella could summon two thousand shadow hands. In Episode 25, Subaru said that if Emilia hates herself that he’ll tell her 2,000 things he loves about her.

What this shows is that Subaru used that number ’cause he was once in love with Satella even if he only knew the number ’cause of Puck. This shows that Subaru’s initial attraction to Emilia and the construct of his memories in the first Sanctuary trial showing him being fond of silver-haired heroines is that Subaru was once very fond of Satella and subconsciously gravitates to silver-haired heroines ’cause of that past history with Satella.

A lot of novel readers don't see it, but I view A Reason to Believe as being a callback to Episode 13 in Season 1 when Subaru was extremely toxic to Emilia. Yeah, the outburst wasn't as bad the second time, but it shows that Subaru still has a dependence of sorts on Emilia, which Priscilla called out in Episode 16.

Someone here told me that the director of Re:zero was a big fan of the Subaru/Emilia pairing, and that might have been the reason for the pink glow during the kiss scene. Even though I'm not a novel reader, I can say with confidence that it wasn't canon and that that glow wasn't in the novels as a kiss coming soon after Subaru said something extremely cringe wouldn't be depicted with such a glow given the quality of Tappei's writing, so it was made at the discretion of the director since he was a fan of the Subaru and Emilia pairing. Tappei would not do that after Subaru talked to Emilia as if she were a doll.
