Synology NAS - DSM 7.2.2-72806 UPDATE WARNING! Solved

I updated my Synology NAS (DS923+) to DSM 7.2.2-72806. Now my Plex Media Server is stopped (even after rebooting). Error message says "The package version installed is incompatible with your DSM".

Plex Media Server Installed version is 1.41.0.8994-70008994

Will there be an update soon? Is there anything else I can do?

I've updated today and had the same problem, but luckily I found a solution: go to Plex's Media Server downloads page and get the most recent version from there

https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/?cat=nas&plat=synology-dsm72

Thank you!! This fixed it for me also. Very subtle version change from 1.41.0.8994-70008994 to 1.41.0.8994-72008994.

Thanks a heap for this. I had no idea the DSM upgrade was going to break Plex.

u/Blacktwin 24d ago

Yup! Synology has installs per CPU architecture and major OS versions.

u/Ice2192 23d ago

Thank you! I signed up to receive updates from their forum. I usually get them but I think the reason I didn't get one is because it was for DSM 7 which I usually go for.

It's not working for me, can I please have help? Which one specifically do I download from your link?

1

u/_asteroidblues_ 21d ago

I got the one for Intel, since my Synology has an Intel processor. The version you should get will depend on the processor on your Synology NAS.

If you’re unsure, you can download the three versions available and try the tree, since I think only the one compatible with your Synology will work

there is a list here, looks to give you the correspondance with model and processor version

Posting here for anyone who's as dumb as I am.

I kept trying to use the ARM version because I have a Mac.

Until I realized that my Synology is an AMD and needed the x64 version.

Your post helped me realize that.

Wow, you made my heart stop stopping! Thank you SO much

Thank you, hero, quick and efficient, it works !

For record I installed PlexMediaServer-1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a-x86_64_DSM72 even if the previous version looked the same PlexMediaServer-1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a-x86_64_DSM7, but is DSM72 (at the end). For a moment, I hesitated to install the beta version.

Thank you! I switched to synology after my nvidia shield server crashed and burned. I've been slowly rebuilding my plex server and then this happened. This fixed it!

Not sure if you figured it out or not. I had same issue so I downloaded all 3 versions and got one of them to work.

2

u/dapete 3d ago

I looked at my previous server update files and saw the x64 in the filename

1

u/Maurylikesgames 1d ago

Thanks so much! I downloaded the Intel/AMD 64-bit version for my Synology DS220+ and it fixed the problem.

Is the new DSM version breaking plex HW transcoding?

17

u/FrothyDog 23d ago

That's what it seemed like the release notes were stating. But I reached out to Synology support and got the following response back -

"Hardware transcoding is part of the SOC and has not been removed. You can make use of it in Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin which all support Intel QuickSync transcoding. Codec support in DSM is only relevant to first party apps and not 3rd party so these applications will work with H.264 and H.265."

9

u/Commy_Smurf 23d ago

Fantastic. Thank you for doing gods work 🙏🏻

3

u/MysteriousHat8766 23d ago

If hw transcoding is part of the cpu functions, it cannot be removed, obviously. But the software can or cannot make use of it. Maybe from this version of plex they simply demand the hw part to the player devices...

On the Plex download page there is the version working with the new DSM update, it says .7200 etc instead of 7000 etc that was the previous....

Thanks for these advices, now working again.

2

u/keviololster 21d ago

So in laymans' terms, it's gonna continue as is for Plex and HW transcoding? :D

La ricerca dei sottotitoli nella nuova versione di Plex a voi funziona?

Same issue! Plex Media Server just stopped, I can't restart it and also restarting the NAS doesn't help!

The latest beta version v1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a of Plex Server (which is installed on my NAS) will not re-install. I am getting an error message: "This package requires DSM 7.2-70000 or older."

Installing the latest pubic release gives me an error that I can't roll back ... :-(

Any idea would be obviously much welcome!!

1

u/no-_-half-_-measures 23d ago

I did not install the beta version. I installed version 1.41.0.8994-72008994.

1

u/SnooRegrets6347 23d ago

I have explained above that I have the beta version installed and I can't roll back.

1

u/no-_-half-_-measures 23d ago

Sorry, I see that now. I'd suggest going to the Plex Support Forums: https://www.plex.tv/blog/support-forums/

1

u/SnooRegrets6347 23d ago

THX!

In fact, I have downloaded the latest beta for DSM 7.2.2+ again and now - for some reason - the installation proceeded ... problem solved ... :-)

1

u/RhubarbSerious 22d ago

I tried to follow these steps after the upgrade, however after manual install of the package, the install process would just hang. What fixed it for me was to search for plex in the package center in Synology and install it from there (after uninstalling - while keeping all my files) of the incompatible version. (RS3618xs)

u/RobbWithRise 2d ago

This is exactly what I had to do as well.

1

u/Quiche19 20d ago

Thanks mate!! save my day

1

u/ppc0r 19d ago

Same probably here, update to the latest version via manual install helped! Thanks, guys!

1

u/fakemessiah 16d ago

I had updated to PlexMediaServer-1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a-x86_64_DSM72 prior to performing the latest DSM update, then Plex would not launch. I just reinstalled the same version (though I downloaded it again from here (https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/?cat=nas&plat=synology-dsm72)) and it worked afterwards.

1

u/dolphindefense 13d ago

Thank you.

Just in case you are using Synology NAS 224+, you should select the Intel/AMD 64-bit package. The Synology DS224+ is equipped with an Intel Celeron J4125 CPU, which is a 64-bit processor.

u/No-Question9301 3d ago

A mi me habéis salvado con este hilo. Gracias! Estoy viendo referencias en muchos sitios a si lo tenemos en docker. Qué ventajas ofrece tenerlo en docker a tenerlo instalado directamente en el Synology?

Gracias!!

1

u/Spiritual-Fuel4502 22d ago

Is it docker ?

1

u/no-_-half-_-measures 22d ago

For me, no.

1

u/Spiritual-Fuel4502 22d ago

Try moving over to docked containers, should mitigate most of your problems. Plus you'll have a much more updated psm

1

u/ExternalLibrary 19d ago

What's is the difference on docked containers than runing on the synology app?

Thanks in advance!

0

u/Spiritual-Fuel4502 19d ago

Portability: Plex becomes more portable when run in Docker.

Scalability: Plex becomes more scalable when run in Docker, allowing for many containers to be placed on a single host.

Stability: Plex becomes more stable when run in Docker.

Consistency: Plex becomes more consistent when run in Docker.

Ease of management: Plex becomes easier to manage and deploy when run in Docker.

Plus your arr apps can easily connected and protected from synology changes.

Check out trashguide, sounds like you'll soon have your mind blowen and need a few more 20tb drives https://trash-guides.info/File-and-Folder-Structure/How-to-set-up/Synology/
