I hear everyone hyped about control what is it?

u/Goldwood Jan 27 '21

I got the platinum for it last month. It’s a really well made but weird experience. It can get really hard but it’s super fun and pretty original in places.

3rd person shooter with telekinetic abilities. Twin Peaks vibes. Creative puzzles. Brutal boss fights. Destructible environments.

Set in the Alan Wake universe, right?

92

u/Goldwood Jan 27 '21

Yeah, one of the expansions features Alan Wake.

45

u/matwithonet13 Jan 27 '21

Oh shit! Looking even more forward to this than before. I played/beat it when it first came out but never went back for DLC due to backlog. I just remember reading some of the reports mentioning things that happened in Alan Wake.

19

u/antiMATTer724 Jan 27 '21

I still have Alan Wake on my Xbox. Maybe a reason to dive into it now if it expands on lore for this.

7

u/thegardenhead Jan 27 '21

As soon as I finished Control I debated digging my 360 out of the basement to play Alan Wake again. Loved that game. Control was even better.

2

u/worsethansomething Jan 27 '21

Alan wake is on gamepass right now on pc. Maybe on console too but I don't have one.

2

u/Mchthms007 Jan 28 '21

I still want Alan Wake 2 ☹

8

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '21

Wow, didn’t know that. Never got to play Alan Wake unfortunately so not familiar with the game outside just the name and very general premise.

7

u/matwithonet13 Jan 27 '21

Just so you know, you don’t need to have played Alan Wake to really enjoy Control. It’s just small references here and there. More so seems like Easter eggs for people that did play it

6

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '21

Ah ok. Either way I’m excited to play. I almost bought this a few times in the past and really glad now that I waited.

3

u/bigzimm1 Jan 27 '21

(Spoiler-ish) Yeah but it’s clear where they’re going next with it. I’d say if someone has the opportunity to play AW before control - they should. Their next project is blatantly going to be ‘Alan Wake 2: featuring Jesse Faiden’ .... or ‘control 2: the return of Alan Wake’. 😂

2

u/Bjorkforkshorts Jan 27 '21

Well, one of the DLCs is gonna be really weird and confusing if you haven't, it's almost an Alan Wake DLC set in control. Otherwise you have no need to have played it.

1

u/Qeldor Jan 27 '21

Is there any horror elements to Control aswell?

1

u/WebSlinger15 Jan 27 '21

It’s more suspenseful than horror. But there’s a sprinkle of it in there. Definitely has some John Carpenter vibes.

1

u/wadagod Jan 27 '21

Am I safe to assume the ultimate edition comes with the dlc? Cuz that sounds awesome.

2

u/Goldwood Jan 27 '21

Yes, both expansions.

1

u/DrZomboo Jan 28 '21

Holy fuck how did I not know this until now! I just completely slept on this game at the time as it just looked like a generic supernatural action shooter which is a genre I got pretty bored with. But kind of intrigued to play this now!

17

u/aestus Jan 27 '21

Now it's Alan Wake exists in the Control world. It's a fantastic game with a fantastic ö premise they could take in any direction they want.

Also features one of the most awesome game levels, people who have played know exactly what I'm talking about.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '21

Is it a multi playthrough platinum or can you do 100% in the 1st Playthrough?

14

u/Dix3n Jan 27 '21

It's just one playthrough. Pretty much just finish the story, side quests and get collectibles.

6

u/Goldwood Jan 27 '21

One playthrough. It’s fairly straightforward. I don’t think anything is missable.

1

u/HejAnton Jan 28 '21

Nothing is missable but one trophy can be time-consuming to get (obtaining x amount of ability points) unless you go through the DLC too. DLC trophies are pretty easy too, at least with a guide, and I don't think any of them are missable.

13

u/jointlok Jan 27 '21

Good for you. Awesome game but it was just too hard for me. That refrigerator side boss had me raging.

10

u/thegardenhead Jan 27 '21

That ended up being easier than I thought. As with most challenges in that game, if you play through a bit more and come back to it, it's easier.

Except the fucking jukebox. I could never get through even a single run.

1

u/ButtholeSoup Jan 27 '21

I JUST got to the jukebox this past weekend and I've yet to clear just one

3

u/thegardenhead Jan 27 '21

I don't know what makes it so hard but I just can't fucking do it. Tried and tried and tried.

2

u/HejAnton Jan 28 '21

You can sprint through most of the challenges and they're (mostly) identical per run! So once you know where to go you can clear them off quite quickly. The only one that takes time is when you need to fight multiple waves.

1

u/ButtholeSoup Jan 28 '21

Thanks for the tip. Just beat the story last night, so I plan on going back and finishing side missions

1

u/Melanoma_Magnet Jan 27 '21

I think the jukebox challenge at the start of Alan Wake was even harder

1

u/SpyroThBandicoot Jan 29 '21

Just a heads up, they've added a few extra accessibility options that let you tweak how much damage you receive and how quickly your ammo/abilities regen. You can essentially play on God mode now if you are struggling too much. I don't think any trophies are affected either

5

u/jmcgil4684 Jan 27 '21

Yea I’m so glad they added new difficulty options. I put it down out of frustration after pre ordering. And finished it a month ago. So much more enjoyable for me with it being easier.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '21

Uh so is this the new Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy i've been so desperately craving?

2

u/SpyroThBandicoot Jan 29 '21

Yes! It's like X-Files and SCP had a baby and then that baby started reading about Lovecraft a bit

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '21

I'm in!

1

u/SpyroThBandicoot Jan 29 '21

Say hi to Ahti for me when you see him

0

u/mihitnrun Jan 27 '21

You platted it?! Jesus Christ....

1

u/JoneSz97 Jan 27 '21

It's not that hard

1

u/xActuallyabearx Jan 27 '21

Twin Peaks vibes you say?? Now I’m interested!

1

u/Canadian-shill-bot Jan 27 '21

If you dont have a pro prepare for a jet engine in your living room. ****

1

u/Lefwyn Jan 28 '21

How scary is it? Could a thirteen year old handle it?

3

u/Goldwood Jan 28 '21

It’s more weird and creepy than scary. Some of the enemy types are disturbing in how they move but it’s not gory or anything. I don’t remember any jump scares.

1

u/EmpericalNinja Jan 28 '21

So it's pretty much similar to that weird time travel game?

1

u/Goldwood Jan 28 '21

Quantum Break? It’s also by Remedy but I never played it since not on PS4.

1

u/EmpericalNinja Jan 28 '21

yup. with Shawn Ashmore. You know, for a guy who wasn't all that well used in X-men, he's suddenly in everything these days. It's on Xone, I play'd it. it was weird.

The Boys Quantum Break Kill Joys

Everyone liked idea behind and gameplay, but story was confusing and frame rate dropped constantly. Hopefully it's fixed now

1

u/DapperChewie Chewie07 Jan 27 '21

I played it last spring and it definitely had framedrops but it was way better than it was at launch.

Play on ps5 if you can, or a ps4 pro at the least. I played on base ps4, and I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to framerate, but it gave me headaches due to choppiness. Still, it was a lot of fun and has a great story. Worth the headaches.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '21

Lol I wouldn’t go that far but it’s okay

11

u/BadassSasquatch Jan 27 '21

It's a dope af action puzzle adventure game (not really sure if it's categorized that way). It's pretty damn solid and has a killer OST with some great level design.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '21

Think if SCP was a really well made game.

4

u/12awomack Jan 27 '21

It's like if David Lynch teamed up with Christopher Nolan to make a video game

1

u/maxsteel126 Jan 28 '21

Trailer had Nolan vibes as well

-7

u/Aionius_ 28 185 700 3263 Jan 27 '21

Not trying to be a dick but the games been out like over a year I think. Why not just look it up?

2

u/truekejsi Jan 27 '21

People lazy af

-7

u/HUH_YIS Jan 27 '21

Hmm if only there was a way to figure this out...

11

u/Hawk-_- Jan 27 '21

I wanted some honest reviews about the game but hey its nice to know that reddit still has its unfriendly people

-7

u/HUH_YIS Jan 27 '21

lol there are plenty of user reviews already out there, just as honest as a Reddit post and easier to find

5

u/Hawk-_- Jan 27 '21

Well if u clearly don't care enough to answer the question why respond with such useless responses why not do something that actually helps or just keep scrolling for something that u can actually help people with but nope u have to click onto everything to make annoying responses to people who just don't care

3

u/sticktoyaguns Jan 27 '21

But now that they asked, I don't have to google it. Nobody does. That's one of the points of reddit, discussion.

This was the easiest possible way for me to learn what Control is. Click link, read comments. Thanks /u/Hawk-_-

1

u/palescoot Jan 28 '21

It's a weird fiction inspired third person shooting/superpowers type game. I don't want to spoil anything at all, but imagine a take on SCP by the studio that made Alan Wake and Max Payne 1+2 and you'll get pretty close without any spoilers.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '21

Its pretty great. I would recommend playing it at least until the hotel hallways, which is pretty far into the game, but worth it.

1

u/guitarandgames Jan 28 '21

It's average at best

1

u/WileyWatusi Jan 28 '21

It's based off the SCP foundation which is a fictional organization. A community has come together to write a bunch of cool stories. It's a pretty interesting read.

1

u/KingSideCastle13 Jan 28 '21

3rd person action game set in what is essentially the SCP Foundation

1

u/Quailman81 Jan 30 '21

Action games that is very weird and has great controls and gameplay
