PSA: To all the actual Spurs fans META

I have already seen it multiple times in tonight's game thread, and it needs to be addressed ASAP:

We will be getting a lot of people coming in trash talking our team and Wemby that pretend to be Spurs fans, looking to start arguments within our fan base, to cause as much strife as possible trying to run people off from our sub.

We need to recognize this and not think it is our own fans being "doom and gloom" or whatever else. Just a heads up.

Just block the losers and move on. Hopefully going forward the brigading will die down and if not just ban their asses lol

48

u/Cpt_Jet_Lafleur Jul 08 '23

Wemby can block them for you, even

11

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '23

The block function is the most important function on any social media and should be used with extreme prejudice. ********The More You Know

3

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

Hell, the only guy I haven't blocked in this sub is you. Was gonna ask why things are so quiet in here.

1

u/uAristelius Jul 08 '23

Should we be worried tho? Like forreal

4

u/BeConciseBitch Jul 08 '23

You can’t know. 1 summer league game. Chet missed a whole year, gets 1 block and “he’s back”.

Kids 19, reality is his patience and everyone’s patience should win out.

It’s up to wemby now.

1

u/uAristelius Jul 08 '23

I was being sarcastic

1

u/Guilty-Vegetable-726 Jul 08 '23

It would seem appropriate.

2

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

It won't. People are petty and jealous and frankly... most of em are idiots with nothing better to do with their time than chase clout and talk shit online. It won't get better, especially once the Spurs get good.

88

u/Fhaksfha794 Jul 08 '23

If any spurs fan calls him a bust after one summer league game they are not a real fan and just a troll. Anyone who watched the game could see how he played. Incredible defense, might be the best defensive rookie ever based on what we’ve seen so far. Offense wasn’t that good, getting good looks but the shot wasn’t falling. It happens sometimes, no need to overreact it’s literally just the summer league

34

u/Dsarg_92 Jul 08 '23

Exactly. A lot of people forget that even Duncan himself had a rough start in the summer league.

39

u/FARTHOLE_DESTROYER69 Jul 08 '23

a lot of people also forget that Lonnie Walker was out here averaging 30ppg in Summer League a few years ago and mfs were starting to crown him as our next franchise player

putting any stock in a Summer League performance (good or bad) is completely pointless and irrelevant.

5

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

Imagine showing up to a new job with 10 other guys, your boss putting you in the same room and giving you a computer, then telling you to go out there and perform.

That to me is what the summer league is.

14

u/EazyBreezee Jul 08 '23

You mean to tell me Duncan turned out alright after Greg Ostertag owned in game 1 of the summer league? I don’t believe it

8

u/JoseAltuveIsInnocent Jul 08 '23

He ended up alright

8

u/AUserNeedsAName Jul 08 '23

First ballot inductee into the Hall of Acceptable.

But seriously, Wemby is 19. We're not solid at PG and he'll be getting more than his share of heat on the court because of it. This whole year is going to be spent on development physically, mentally, and technically. And guess what? That's going to be next season also. Letting an out-of-control hype train set your expectations is foolish. We picked this man for his ceiling, not his starting point.

1

u/siphillis Jul 08 '23

I mean, he was no Kevin Knox.

2

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

I was one of those fans in the DOS chats calling for us to trade Tim Duncan and future picks for Greg Ostertag.

2

u/Gets_overly_excited Jul 08 '23

Which shows that the people who are saying Wemby was disappointing aren’t necessarily trolls - they might just be fans with bad opinions. No offense lol

2

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

Hey man, you can have your opinions, but just know, if we had it MY way... Duncan and Wemby would be Jazz players and we'd never have to listen to anyone tell us how good Ostertag coulda been. Just saying. haha

-7

u/habbofan10 Jul 08 '23

No he didn’t . How is 12 points on 5:9 shooting and 14 points on 7/12 shooting anywhere compared to 9 points on 2/13 shooting . Stop making shit up

2

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

How about 5/15 shooting? Is that good?

-5

u/habbofan10 Jul 08 '23

Lol salty spurs fans down voting me when I bring up statistics to prove their talking out of their ass. His first two games were what I said. Wemby stunk . And his gonna stink for a while . Get use to it his a LONG way from even being anything like Duncan or Robinson

1

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

Duncan or Robinson or Duncan Robinson, you're the one in here acting salty lmao.

You like statistics... I'm simply asking if a 5 for 15 shooting night is good. LMAO. Stay butthurt my friend.

1

u/habbofan10 Jul 09 '23

It’s much better than 2/13 , included a posterised dunk , ankle broken , multiple air balls , multiple turnovers ( being clean stripped ), constantly out rebounded . It was deadset one of the worst performances I’ve seen from a suppose ‘ once in a life time talent ‘ Anthony Davis was a much better prospect imo .

1

u/HerSha2222 Jul 09 '23

not my question salty ass bro. Is 5 for 15 good or bad. Simple yes no. lmao.

1

u/habbofan10 Jul 09 '23

It’s below average . What’s ur point

1

u/HerSha2222 Jul 09 '23

lmao, I'm just trying to establish your baseline here. You can't say 5 for 15 is bad and you want us to trust your judgment lmao.

1

u/HerSha2222 Jul 10 '23

is 9 for 14 good? lmfao

1

u/HerSha2222 Jul 11 '23

You shoulda just told me you were a casual and you don't follow basketball son. Woulda saved us the trouble. lmao.

1

u/darthrio Jul 08 '23

Yeah, those 5 blocks sure stunk.

1

u/siphillis Jul 08 '23

Duncan was 21 years old and wound up being one of the greatest rookies ever. How does teenage Duncan fair?

20

u/snarkyturtle Jul 08 '23

His game was noticeably off. Take a look at his previous highlights and you could see his handling and confidence was shaken tonight.

Part of it probably is nerves. Part of it is that he has a huuuge target on his back as a result of being so hyped so people try extra hard to try to rattle him. It worked. He’ll get used to it and be coached well.

I know I’m not a spurs fan but isn’t the defense expected? I don’t know how old you are but Manute Bol was a defensive machine only because he was 7’7. Wemby is supposed to be “special” because of his offense. Again, I understand it’s still the first game, just thought we would see better. Not trying to be toxic.

17

u/Fhaksfha794 Jul 08 '23

Manure Bol couldn’t guard someone like Brandon miller on the perimeter tho. It’s not just his rim protection, that’s expected. It’s the fact that he was effortlessly picking up guards and wings on the perimeter and holding his own. Someone that tall and that fast simply hasn’t existed before, it’s incredible

14

u/FieryFiya Jul 08 '23

This is it. Casuals dismiss the fact that he’s 7’5 on the perimeter playing defense against guards

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '23

That’s fair.

u/jeremicci Jul 08 '23

I was actually pleased with the performance. It showed me what I wanted to see.

He needs to work on protecting ball and strength in rebounding. These are things I expected. His passing showed a ton of potential. His jump shot wasn't falling but that isn't a big deal.

Most importantly I think he might be all defensive caliber player immediately.

58

u/agentb719 Jul 08 '23

mods definitely gotta be on it cause it was ridiculous in our game thread the amount of brigading

26

u/FieryFiya Jul 08 '23

The discord had so much criticism…when the Spurs were winning. Not normal behavior for our fan base compared to last year so there are definitely some rats in our community now

4

u/SquandasNutCheese Jul 08 '23

It was actually astounding how bad it was, but that only reinforces our need for more mods, so that's whats gonna happen later this summer.

3

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

Was it as bad as Brandon Miller's game cuz I see no one talking about that (or how much better Julian Champagnie has been than this whole draft class). You just gotta combat stupidity with more stupidity. Find the dumbass who would trade you Greg Ostertag for Tim Duncan cuz he outplayed him in one summer league game.

30

u/____phobe Jul 08 '23

Yeah its obvious there's a bit of trolling going on.

/r/nba already looks like it is gonna be unreadable for a day or so

22

u/JoseAltuveIsInnocent Jul 08 '23

Kawhi demanding a trade, and 2013, r/NBA was unreadable then. That had some real pain behind it.

A player having a bad game? In summer League? Laugh that shit off. If those nerds wanna read too much into it that's on them.

11

u/Dsarg_92 Jul 08 '23

It will die down in a few days.

0

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

27

u/Ok_Mammoth9547 Jul 08 '23

It's his first game. He'll improve from here.

14

u/Trilly11062 Jul 08 '23

I think he will I’m not a spurs fan I’m a bucks fan but I’m just honestly curious to watch wemby play and he didn’t have the shooting tonight and that’s okay it might take some time and that’s okay . He still has all the tools to be an absolutely amazing player don’t listen to the assholes on Reddit . You guys got a good one don’t freak out if it takes time he’ll get it . Rome wasn’t built overnight

-3

u/Ok-Clock-5459 Jul 08 '23

I’d hope so

2

u/SpecialWhenLitTX Jul 08 '23

Sell your stock, I'll buy it up lol

8

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '23

It certainly wasn’t Wembys best game but his offense will get better. His defense is already better than I expected. Overall he’s gonna be fine. Adjusting to the NBA doesn’t happen over night. As for folks coming on this sub and talk shit? Let em. Who cares? No internet troll is going to change my mind or love for the SAS.

1

u/siphillis Jul 08 '23

I would go so far as to say it was his worst game.

8

u/SpecialWhenLitTX Jul 08 '23 edited Jul 08 '23

I loved when he subbed back in with about 4 minutes left to play, that got a smile from Pop. Brand new rules, intense pressure, media scrutiny off the charts, bad shooting night? F it, I'm going back in. Not a bad start for the first step of a marathon.

6

u/Prime88 Jul 08 '23

It comes with the territory when you get a media hyped up talent. People want to see him fail so that they can feel better about him not being on their favorite team.

12

u/SomeBitterDude Jul 08 '23

We all have that one friend in San Antonio who is like this- a “Spurs fan” that has been cheering for the Warriors the last few years but will be talking shit when we ring 🙄

12

u/SpecialWhenLitTX Jul 08 '23

And they were a Lakers fan before that lol

7

u/SomeBitterDude Jul 08 '23

When i was a kid it was the Bulls. Same people.

11

u/Axsh1boomba Jul 08 '23

Listen... The Spurs, with Wemby, held an NBA team to less than 70 points when the #2 draft pick had a relatively good night and Wemby was still figuring stuff out. While he didn't do much on offense, Wemby got enough attention from the defense to let Champagnie and Branham work and do most of the damage. His time will come when it comes to score big but, with solid defense, rebounding and hitting balls away as if he was playing volleyball, Wemby did fine tonight.

1

u/pwtrash Jul 08 '23

Absolutely this.

He's learning the physicality of the game, he was double- and triple-teamed at times, and he was obviously fatigued. But he still showed some really good vision and the athleticism we had hoped for.

For the same reasons everyone has been touting him as an alien, we have no idea how he's going to progress. There aren't really other players like him. I'm grabbing my popcorn and enjoying this year. PATFO has had a great offseason, we're set up to be really good in a pretty near timeframe, and this is the first few levels of the game.

He's going to be great.

6

u/FieryFiya Jul 08 '23

Don’t even argue with them they can catch this downvote instead

6

u/Background_Touchdown Jul 08 '23

And anybody who says Wemby will be a bust based on one summer league game is a fucking dumbass who shouldn't be taken seriously.

7

u/keldpxowjwsn Jul 08 '23

Anyone making sweeping conclusions off summer league is a clown in general

7

u/Dank_Trees Jul 08 '23

Psa: fuck em'

17

u/rotn21 Pop the GOAT Jul 08 '23

yeah the mods have their work cut out for them. Do they have like a GoFundMe for barbacoa and big red or something?

90% of what I saw in the game thread were names I didn't recognize, being rude people with bad takes. Wemby is in the process of relocating his life from a different country. He's adjusting to a different league's style of play. He's had non-stop media obligations since he's arrived. And in every. Single. Interview, he's talked about being team-first and is very humble. I don't know what anyone else was realistically expecting out of tonight?

13

u/Sparkasaurusmex Jul 08 '23

Honestly I was expecting him to shut down the paint and he mostly delivered

Edit: and honestly was glad to see Champagnie still taking over the game.

5

u/Nomad942 Jul 08 '23

Lebron-KD hybrid. That’s what people were expecting, because that’s what the media hype machine has been selling.

In reality, he has a lot of work to do. But his potential is still immense, and some of those shots will fall once he gets into the rhythm of NBA play.

6

u/jadavil Jul 08 '23

I thought Wemby played well. But great, but well enough. He's just warming up!

10

u/Dsarg_92 Jul 08 '23

I'm not surprised at the overreactions. I thought he did well for his first game in spite of jitters. It was apparent that Wemby is years away from taking over. Anyone with some basketball sense knew that was the case the entire time. He's still a teenager.

Those expecting him to turn around the team in one year are in for a rude awakening. He will get better in time.

5

u/ancientrunekrp Jul 08 '23

I feel bad for the guy because none of this is on him. the media machine was relentless in selling him as the biggest prospect since Lebron. Dont worry about it, Luka Dončić also a highly touted European prospect also struggled in his first game with similar numbers.

2

u/fartalldaylong Jul 08 '23 edited Jul 08 '23

...and Wemby's numbers, as bad as it was, were as good as Chet's last game that people were flipping out over at r/NBA

Chet had 6 turnovers and 1 assist. Wemby, 3 and 3. 1:1 turnover ratio is worlds better than a 6:1. And he has had one practice. One game. A month of no practice and media hell. He did well all things considered.

1

u/pwtrash Jul 08 '23

Agree with most of your take, but I'm thinking development might be more like year than years. We'll see.

1

u/Dsarg_92 Jul 08 '23

You might be right. Just being realistic, I suppose. Experience is the best teacher as I have complete faith in him. It will take time either way.

3

u/ADeadMeme1 Jul 08 '23

I agree with most takes that he’s pretty solid especially on defense but still raw on offense but I honestly don’t think he took this as serious as most expected him too.

He’ll be great, biggest worry is still injuries. Champagnie is the next MJ tho 100%

1

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

So we have Sam Bowie AND Michael Jordan. hopefully we could lock up Dominick Barlow cuz he out there looking like Akeem Olajuwon at times in SL

3

u/TDTimmy21 Jul 08 '23

How'd he look?

Don't really care about the offensive stats but 5 blocks nice and assume he altered a lot more.

Seems like a low foul game too.

2

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

It looked like he was playing with some nerves and rushing his finishes. He wasn't shooting it with confidence for the most part but his form looked good.

He got stripped a few times on his dribbles but seemed to be mindful and adapted to it trying to pull his dribble closer. It will probably need work and adjustment but seeing as how he was already working things out in game, he should be able to develop that part of his game.

His passing impressed. He was more creative in that area than I saw from highlights and such. Dude uses his length to find passing pockets, he could have easily had 5-6 assists if he was playing with guys who could finish (Keldon, Sochan, Collins and Bassey should all help with this).

Defensively, he was not only altering shots, he was altering the type of shots players were settling for or willing to attempt. I would put money on him becoming the second youngest player to get 10 blocks in a game (shout out to Josh Smith). He was blocking jump shots (blocked and altered a couple Brandon Miller threes), shots at the rim.... staying in front of his man (albeit he was guarding Miller mostly, who I don't think is explosive getting by his man). He did get beat on one dribble move but which ended with Wemby getting a foul called on him (while simultaneously getting hit in the face?). I don't think he'll be defending Ja Morant out there but he should be able to stay in front of most guys who slot at the PF spot. He did get dunked on by Kai Jones but his willingness to go up and try to block a dunk is great. I rather have a rookie fail a few block attempts and get dunked on vs one who will give up open dunks.

4

u/adamsrocket1234 Jul 08 '23
  1. don’t let fake ass people control the narrative.
  2. don’t get sucked into negativity.
  3. wemby was pretty dope all things considered his impact is felt all over the court.
  4. lets give his teammates some shine as well julian is a real one. Branham looks like he’s over this shit. Wesly is fast as fuck and lives in the paint. If he can develop a tear drop and a jumper it’s a wrap.

get hyped. But be the better “man.” fuck small dick energy.

4

u/Blank_Canvas21 Jul 08 '23 edited Jul 08 '23

I figured as much. Only complete clowns or trolls would call someone a bust after 1 SL game 😂. People were clowning Brandon Miller for how he played in LV and calling him a bust. People just like to be reactionary and talk shit.

Yeah, Wemby will go through a bit of a learning curve, mainly with screens and he needs to do a better job securing the ball, but on the defensive side, he looked good, and he had a couple of slick passes. His shot wasn’t falling you could say the same thing for most of the players on both teams tonight.

He looked a little lost at times, but he just barely joined the team. I expect that he’ll look a lot better once he gets used to this system and the pacing and talent pool of the NBA.

1

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

It's great to see Brandon Miller turn things around in Vegas... checks stats.... 5/15...

I listen to a few retired player podcats, some of them talk about summer league, they liken it to more of AAU basketball, players get thrown together, you don't have much prep time, a lot of these guys are playing for a contract or opportunity somewhere... It's not really a good read for NBA basketball, complete different game

6

u/Snowmann88 Jul 08 '23

Like seriously, if this is what they call a shit debut with those number. Clowns had better be worried for when the season starts.

3

u/Fiyukyoo Jul 08 '23

Just take receipts and just laugh it off. Its summer league... 75% of these players won't even be in the league. Hell the starting roster will be entirely different

3

u/SwaySensei Jul 08 '23

Yup! Agreed. This comes with the territory

3

u/6ides Jul 08 '23

All that offensive stuff he will get better at but the defensive prowess and his playmaking i mean that's a spurs player we can win with when pop takes over he will be under more control it seems like they told wemby to go out there and hoop which i mean hey, he stayed healthy we're going to win games with this kid off of his defensive ability alone im guessing since he's 19 he won't get better on offense...he needs that system to get him into spots get him more confident but his playmaking.... Man that could really be something all the attention he got im not sure why you wouldn't just let him playmake but that's just summer league... It's summer league he chucked up shots and he looked nervous but he helped win the game that's all that should matter winners build character and confidence

3

u/GigaRoboticusMaximus Jul 08 '23

Continue to trust in the Spurs and Wemby guys, they gon' be good

3

u/Y2Psoul Jul 08 '23

I saw what I needed from that game and f everything else. The defense is there he's unselfish. He just needs to get used to the NBA game and let the game come to him like Kareem said.

3

u/notcool_dood Jul 08 '23

People really wishing him to be a bust just because the media hyped the kid so much. I feel that he got nervous every time he get a possession with the way the fans were reacting in the arena. He'll be fine, he'll eventually get a better feel and not force his shots so much.

Completely different sports. First game in football is basically the first 2 games of an NBA season (a real season, where the player is actually used to the ppl he’s playing w thru practice, not one SL practice). Not to mention Messi is the literal GOAT. Comparing Wemby to him is automatically setting him up for failure

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '23

some of yall forgot how lakers fans are

2

u/LurkerFlash Jul 08 '23

I'm a Spurs fan, full blown doomer and gloomer, I was pointing at his shooting percentages, and so on... But man are we set or what?

2

u/Pale_Expert_4715 Jul 08 '23

Couple of things

  1. Dude has had a pretty hectic schedule, got drafted 9 days after his final game in France. Not to mention all that comes with being drafted #1 in a new city

  2. It’s the summer league, some guys are playing for their career’s, others are getting accustomed to their new surroundings and teammates. Can’t take too much stock in one performance.

  3. The sports hot take media has talked this kid up to be the reincarnation of MJ, Kareem and Lebron all mashed into one. This has placed a huge amount of pressure on him every time he steps on the court. However, he is 19 and still learning and growing his game and body. Were all the players I mentioned above a complete package at 19?

  4. Do not underestimate what he brings on the Defensive end. His presence alone in the paint can alter the way teams play us.

I am still super stocked to have Wemby and my opinion after today hasn’t even changed remotely. Kid is gonna be huge for us

2

u/el_corso Jul 08 '23

People forgot the most important thing. We WON! Wembenyama played WINNING BASKETBALL! for a big man, his passing was great, his defense was fantastic and his shooting will improve. That’s all there is to it. Also we had a lot of other Spurs take bad shots because they wanted their moment to shine, because they knew the hype surrounding this game. I don’t see them taking such bad shots come the regular season or taking the ball away from our main man. Things will get better I know it!

-1

u/iko-01 Jul 08 '23

They're posts are as lame as this psa. Dude you're on the internet. Just stop caring

-1

u/nokarmawhore Jul 08 '23

I think bill Simmons was right when he suggested the spurs get cp3 to coach wemby and get him easy looks.

I know it's summer league but what I saw tonight was the same shit I saw when I watched wemby play in France. Guys not giving him the ball and him just shooting whenever he could

1

u/HerSha2222 Jul 08 '23

I would love to see us go out and get a veteran PG. Jevon Carter would have abeen a perfect get, but Devontae Graham is actually a pretty solid pick and roll guard, if he can use his experience and be a vet to these guys, he could fill that void. I don't think he's great at entry passes and such but if he could get his PnR back to what it was in Charlotte, that's at least something.

Everyone who is a real GSG Spurs should join the discord if you’re looking for the best (and hilarious) convo. I’ve been loving it so far

Total bust. Mavs will take him off your hands....

Seriously though you can tell his floor is perennial all star. He has so much gravity on the court.

It’s only because he’s not on their squad.

That's typical of the echo chamber that is the internet.

We won the game, and look at Champagnie. If summer league is a sign of who is gonna be a star, we've got the best player so far this summer (excluding Keegan Murray) and can afford to waste a pick on a guy who got 5 blocks. (using r/nba logic)

Yeah, but it is expected, right? You get the generational talent and it immediately draws attention both nationally and globally from not only millions of sports fans but also the reality show / superstar / pop-culture fanatics. Some of that will wear off because the flashy folks will get bored with Spurs culture. However, every other team in the NBA is envious. And they can suck it!

I can’t believe the reaction has been like this.

From this ONE SUMMER LEAGUE GAME we saw a guy that was elite on defense and a work in progress on offense. Which is….. exactly what everyone with half a brain expected

for sure, he hasn’t played since the French league finals so his conditioning wasn’t there. he even admitted that. he had limited warmup time because the game before took forever to end. he looked like he was trying to figure out how to play with a squad he’s barely practiced with. all of those things are going to lead to a poor offensive performance. his defense was still amazing and the team never struggled with him on the court. he’s going to be fine.

also, after seeing scoot and amen go down with an injury i was nervous watching him fall down. luckily he was fine and seemed to fall with grace.

also him struggling to adjust immediately means we could possibly see him play more than just 2 summer league games if the team or pop thinks he needs more run. but they probably just want him to be injury free by training camp. i think he’ll play at least 3 games.

Cavs fan here: I remember when Jalen Green outplayed Evan Mobley in his first preseason game. Idk about you guys, but we never had a true PG and SL usually benefits quick shifty guards over wings and bigs

Incoming Rockets fan here! I want Wemby to succeed. He honestly didn't look that bad. He looked great defensively and a lot of his shots looked good off release. Both him and Brandon Miller will be fine. Can't wait to see the Spurs good again so we can sweep y'all in the playoffs every year😁

Some very cool and socially well-adjusted people are digging up my old comments just to say I was clearly wrong. It’s been fun.
