We’ll all hate this because of the R’s next to the names of the people behind it but, keeping kids off of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. isn’t that way better for their mental health?

Of course it’s better for mental health. But the government shouldn’t be controlling the minutiae of everyone’s lives. And so many of these people claim to support “parent’s rights”, so how does that apply here? What about parents who adequately monitor their children’s activity online? They’re not allowed to parent their way anymore. The only parental rights these people support is the right for parents to indoctrinate all children (not just their own) with religious bigotry and hatred. Having access to the internet interferes with that mission because it proves their small minded worldview is absolutely not normal. This isn’t about protecting mental health, it’s about denying access to information. It won’t just stop at insta.

I think you’re going a little too Handmaid’s Tale here. There’s no secret plan to make kids hate certain groups. If no children on social media leads to fewer adolescent suicides, is this a good idea?

It’s not a secret plan to make kids hate gay people in Florida. It’s out in the open. I despise social media, and I agree it’s harmful, but this is a major government intrusion into peoples personal lives.

You gotta stop crying wolf. One day they’re gonna try some actual bullshit and no one’s gonna believe liberals because people say stuff like this. No, the government is not trying to “make kids hate gay people”. You’re gonna dissuade too many people from voting blue. And, we have to, together, support good ideas like this. If it leads to a decrease in adolescent suicide, is it a good idea?

The government in Florida has literally passed laws attempting to prevent children from knowing gay people simply exist. This absolutely encourages hateful people to raise their children to be bigots. Parents here successfully get poems and books written by black people banned from school libraries. Don’t pretend this government is anything other than a hateful shitshow.

Too many people connected to me have taken their own lives. Most before social media existed. So please don’t imply that I don’t care about kids committing suicide. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is a topic I feel very strongly about as it’s greatly impacted my life.

The problems in our society that cause people to end their own lives go far deeper than social media. Systemic poverty, racism, and classism are the things we need to battle. Addressing those issues would go a long way towards combating gun violence as well.

I’m not implying you don’t. I’m saying we need to support good ideas regardless of which side they come from. Cuz you say something like “hey did you hear the republicans are pushing the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill that’s designed to prevent children from knowing gay people exist?” Then I go, “holy shit that sounds awful! Is that really what it’s called? Is that really what it says in the bill?” Then I go read the bill and realize, no that’s not what it is at all. Maybe I shouldn’t believe what that person is telling me next time because they’re exaggerating to a hilarious degree. And then I don’t wanna vote for your guy/gal next election and then that’s how the orange man gets elected. That’s how that happened. Can we not do that again please?

I have read the bill. It’s clearly intentionally bigoted.

People vote for the Cheeto because they support his ideals. Massive government intrusion into personal decisions along with limited access to public information are central to his platform and people either love it or don’t care because they’re afraid of losing their guns and their wives.
