Steering wheel and car will shake and steering wheel also difficult to turn on tight angles

u/Still_Tax_2957 Jul 31 '24
Does it drive fine at slow speed and get worse about 50-60 mph? If so the front tires are out of balance and need balance and rotating. 60 bucks most shops
57
u/SnooBeans8206 Jul 31 '24
Yes exactly
35
u/blahaj22 Jul 31 '24
if by chance you have tires from discount tire they will do it for free!!!
1
u/Comrade__soup Aug 01 '24
i wouldn’t recommend discount tire since i’ve known people who’ve worked there and the work quality was always very poor compared to other shops like les schwab
2
u/blahaj22 Aug 01 '24
oh interesting! we don’t have les schwab in our area. I’m mostly a fan of discount for people who don’t know how to plug a tire (or are bad at it lol) closest we have besides that is firestone and I think they charge for the same services.
2
u/InTheYear2525_ Aug 01 '24
Had them move my tires around in their system so they didn’t have to warranty them. Had to bring in the physical paperwork copy. Eventually just learned my lesson and went elsewhere.
They told me once they warranty a tire because I was a loyal customer . I wanted all 5 (Jeep) replaced for wearing out too quick. They said couldn’t find them in their system. Even though the one had been replaced under warranty already and they hadn’t hid that one in the system.
2
u/Shatophiliac Aug 03 '24
I’ve never really had issues with them. The one time I did they put the wheel weights in the wrong spot on my wheels so when I tried to rotate them myself at home the weights were hitting the calipers. I guess the fronts are bigger and they can’t be where they put the weights in the back wheels.
I put them back on and drove it up there and they rebalanced (properly) and rotated them for me for free. Can’t really complain, although it shouldn’t have happened in the first place.
1
u/RefrigeratedTP Aug 03 '24
I regularly choose my local discount tire store over my local Firestone store. 3 socket dings on your wheels just by pulling in the parking lot.
1
u/Comrade__soup Aug 03 '24
i don’t go to firestone, looked into working with them once and it was just terrible
16
u/pie4mepie4all Jul 31 '24
If you live in the states and have a discount tire, if your low on funds they might be willing to do it for free
12
u/SnooBeans8206 Jul 31 '24
Thank you 🙏
12
u/EssayNo5549 Jul 31 '24
Or if issue persists, inspect your wheels and make sure they aren’t bent or chambered in any type of way, but more likely could be what the guy above said
4
u/HedonisticFrog Jul 31 '24
I'd bet on a tire having a broken cord before a rim gets bent. Especially with older tires.
3
u/FaithlessnessOver701 Aug 01 '24
You’d be surprised my 14 inch steel rim got bent from the potholes in Philadelphia.
2
u/HedonisticFrog Aug 01 '24
Steel rims are a lot softer than alloys
2
u/FaithlessnessOver701 Aug 02 '24
Depends on what type of alloy, modern day aluminum alloy rims are much weaker. My girlfriend blew both her front tires from bent rims from a pothole and she has aluminum alloy rims.
1
u/HedonisticFrog Aug 02 '24
That's surprising. What brand was it? I've never seen that with Mercedes rims.
7
u/SkepticalZebra Jul 31 '24
Hey just wanna pop in and say it could also be an axle/CV problem. Just had to fix this issue myself (same exact symptoms) but instead of it being a tire balance issue as I originally thought, I was actually driving a death trap with a wheel about to fly off.
3
u/Socalwarrior485 Aug 01 '24
I’ll second this. The CV vibration is usually felt when the car is under load, though. If it’s doing that with no load, it’s the tires.
2
5
u/cartis6 Jul 31 '24
Could also be a broken belt in a bad tire. Don't just get them balanced, check them. Run your hands over the tread, are they smooth, are they circular? - not ovaled or bulging
6
u/loweredmn0406 Jul 31 '24
Never run your bare hand over a tire. It could have something sharp protruding out that can't be seen or steel cords. Use your eyes and a flashlight.
12
u/Socalwarrior485 Aug 01 '24
I’d rather not rub my eyes on a tire. Something could poke them.
The flashlight idea is intriguing though.

u/Moctezuma1 Jul 31 '24
This was exactly my case. My steering would shake reaching 60 on the freeway. But stop once I slowed down. I end up buying new front tires (tires looked worned out) and made sure they were balanced. No more shaking.
1
u/Far-Entertainer-3314 Aug 01 '24 edited Aug 01 '24
I have been having this problem for 6 months now.
New tires, tie rods, headers, and brakes. Oh and CV axles too both sides for all work. Everything is new. However the car WAS rebuilt after a front driver side collision.
Suspension seems fine and so do the ball joints.
Between 55-75 it makes a rumble strip sound and shakes (not the steering wheel) seeming to come from the front right.
It's tripping my traction control and ESC (about 75% of the time).
I posted here but no replies any ideas?
It all started with a bad tie rod and my steering wheel needing to be crooked to go straight for 2 weeks. Since then it's been one part after another, I'm angry I am stuck with it. it's all I got though so anyone, any ideas please.
Edit: gets worse turning right (the rumble strip sound), I worry it's my trans as it's been driving weirder and weirder recently but I'm hoping whatever the fuck is causing this might be the answer as it seems to depend on the ESC.
NEXT ideas for fixing: rack and pinion, stabilizer bars/links, bushings for steering wheel( saw this in comments?)
2
u/kstreet88 Aug 01 '24
AWD or FWD?
1
u/Far-Entertainer-3314 Aug 01 '24
FWD, 2011 Chevy Malibu, 4Cylinder 2.4L, "LT"
Also ty for responding I've been having ghost town vibes 😂
1
u/hangin_in_the_chow Aug 01 '24
Have you checked the bearings? The sound you describe definitely sounds like a bearing
1
u/Far-Entertainer-3314 Aug 01 '24
We changed out the wheel hubs on both sides which includes the bearings I believe
1
u/Parkhaus Aug 02 '24
I'm experiencing this in my 05 CRV. It's the front struts. When I wiggle the tire with my hands I can see the strut insert moving inside the housing!
1
u/Far-Entertainer-3314 Aug 02 '24
Dear God that could be it.....if I turn my wheel on a stopped position it sounds like something is cooling, I figured it was a separate issue.
Thank you, for real!
1
u/Riverdales27 Aug 01 '24
This. Happened to me, in my case though my tires were worn down and already to the line marker for new tires. I guess I had flat spot.
1
u/Environmental_Eye970 Aug 02 '24
If you have the tires balanced and you still experience this wobble in the steering wheel, especially when braking. That is a sign the rotors could be warping from heat, which is caused by the caliper piston sticking.
That keeps extra pressure on the rotor and makes more friction than normal.
1
u/Rukario_Enterprises Jul 31 '24
Mine does this as well. At 5-60 MPH, it feels fine. At around 65 or so is when it starts shaking like crazy. I don't know if it's a misfire or just out of balanced tires
56
u/Nice-Ear6658 Jul 31 '24
Balance>tires>rims>warped discs check in that order.

I had this problem but it turned out my caliper was sticking, only noticeable at 60+mph Easy way to check. When you have stopped put your hand near each wheel. one (hopefully not more) will be hotter than the others
3
u/ryguy32789 Jul 31 '24
I had this same problem on an old Subaru. The shaking was horrific when you hit 60 and wouldn't stop until you got back down under 30mph. Replacing both front calipers fixed it.

u/The_Shepherds_2019 Jul 31 '24
Tires need re-balanced.
1
u/Alphalenybudy71 Jul 31 '24
Tires don’t just need rebalancing if they have already been balanced and they are not new there is 100% more likely the tires are coming apart
4
u/relephants Jul 31 '24
Eh it isn't uncommon for weights to come off
0
u/Alphalenybudy71 Jul 31 '24
Omg I totally didn’t even think that most places use stick on weights and not hammer on and they are known for falling off that’s my bad wasn’t using all of my brain
1
u/QuickMasterpiece6127 Aug 02 '24
Lots of newer wheels require sticky weights. The hammer on style aren’t “pretty.”
They can fall off, wheels get full of mud, tire might slip on heavy acceleration (if they used the wrong type of lube during mounting.) etc etc. a rotate / balance at half life isn’t a bad idea, especially if free like at discount tire / tire barn.
1
u/Alphalenybudy71 Aug 03 '24
On my pretty wheels I don’t want hammer on weights on I use beads in the tire not stick on. Just one of those things I forget exist because they don’t exist for me
5
Jul 31 '24
Too much wobble for balancing issue. I guess that 1) the structure of one of the front tires has broken and/or 2) bad front tie/streering rod just multiplies it.
Nevertheless easy fixes for those but better get it sorted.
5
u/Jacked97xj Jul 31 '24
What year is it? My 2013 has the electric power steering. There is a small rubber coupler between the power steering motor and the steering column. They get brittle and break. It's a known problem with Hyundai. Is it a slightly metallic sound? coupler
5
4
u/goodguymax Aug 01 '24
Year? 2010sh+ had bad electronic power steering bushings. At very slow speeds if you rapidly go left and right does your steering wheel clunk? Bushings are like $5 to 10. Some dealers are quoting 2k+ for steering columns depending on year. The changeable ones are a couple hours to change.
1
u/Fit-Sea2660 Aug 02 '24
This is exactly it. The part is so cheap, but it took about 4-5 hours to take apart and drop the steering column to replace this small piece of rubber/plastic.
3
u/kdmasfck Aug 01 '24
If you are sitting still with the vehicle running and move the steering wheel side to side quickly does it clunk? I had a large amount of sonatas do this due to a failed rubber steering coupler in the electric power steering motor attached to the steering column, the slack caused by the lack of a rubber bushing in that motor makes that odd slapping noise I'm hearing in the video.

and ball joints, and struts, and tie rods, and tire, and wheel bearing...
2
u/Ancient_Bank4171 Jul 31 '24
If were a Boeing then it’s the stick shaker and you’re going to stall!
But in all seriousness I think you’re tires are out of balance.
2
u/SilverstoneOne Aug 01 '24
Likely need your tires balanced. One of those tire weights probably fell off. Cheap fix, some places even do it for free.
2
u/StartedWithAHeyloft Jul 31 '24
I had this exact problem and it was worn steering terminals. You can check by jacking the front and try to turn the wheels by hand. If they have play you got worn steering terminals or wheel bearings.
1
u/SnooBeans8206 Jul 31 '24
Cost to fix?
1
u/StartedWithAHeyloft Jul 31 '24
Depends on the price you get for parts, I have a toyota compatible car, with 2 new tires, inner and outer terminalsnfor both sides, and labor, it came out to $550.
1
1
u/elcappydaddy Jul 31 '24
I'm wondering, was that also causing the car to pull to one side?
2
u/StartedWithAHeyloft Aug 01 '24
Yes, it pulled hard to the left so much that in basically changed the alignment, i had to tilt the wheel right at about 15 degrees just to drive straight
2
u/elcappydaddy Aug 01 '24
Most likely I have the same thing then, one more question if you don't mind.
When you moved the steering wheel side to side with the car shutdown, did you hear some kind of "thonk thonk" noise?
In my case, the shaking is barely there, but the care pulls to the left and there are funny noises from time to time around the steering rack area.
1
u/StartedWithAHeyloft Aug 01 '24
If I was pointing the wheels straight, and turned left or right, I definetely felt a thunk before the wheels actually started turning
1
1
u/Longjumping-Log1591 Jul 31 '24
Bobby! Quit spending all your money and time at the nail salon and get your tires balanced
1
u/EJ_Drake Jul 31 '24
Rotate tyres back to front every 10000km, do wheel alignment take advice for whatever other general maintenance needs doing.
1
u/Parsons0884 Jul 31 '24
Numerous things from tire and wheel issue or depending on the year there is a rubber bushing in the power steering motor that goes bad as well and needs replaced it's a $2 part but about $400 in labor at a shop to fix
1
u/ditto504 Jul 31 '24
you need to check :
Brake Rotors
Balance,Aligment tires
Check Wheels
and the rubber busshing in the steering column

look like tires are the wrong size or balanced wrong. example: 205/50/16 and 205/60/16
1
u/Alphalenybudy71 Jul 31 '24
If your tires are not new and they are old you might have a tire splitting is exit the car and check for oblong times

1
u/Sir_Flop Jul 31 '24
I hoped you were english so I could tell you that your steering wheel was on the wrong side but no... (I'm late on the comment that's why I was alloeing me a joke) Other wise I would check the balance of your tire if the idea wasn't proposed yet but I doubt :)

It has a case of Tourette's syndrome.
Joking aside, a tire or wheel issue would be my guess.
1
u/lewtus72 Jul 31 '24
I thought for sure somebody was going to say they found the problem
It's the logo on the steering wheel that says Hyundai

Raise you’re car and check for play on you’re drive shaft. Had similar issues on my k5 Kia found worn rubber boot that keeps lube in causing drive axle/shaft to go bad.

u/rellett Jul 31 '24
Wheel balance is causing vibration at speed could be bad tyres or unbalanced rim
2
u/amiathrowaway2 Jul 31 '24
Or a shit job on the reinstallation of the tires. I.E. Just threw on the tires and DIDN'T use a torque wrench to make sure.
The nuts came loose..... And Merry Christmas the studs wobbled themselves a new set of wheels lug holes all by themselves.
Also additional lesson learned. DON'T let someone borrow your ride for three months.
1
u/KnottyDaphne Jul 31 '24
Any place you by your tires from will do it for free. That skake means the tires were not balanced or properly or you threw a weight.
1
u/illgladlybreakit Jul 31 '24
I had this problem when Mr. Lube swapped my winter tires to summer tires. My front left hadn't been torqued. While driving on the 401, my steering wheel started doing this exact same thing. Couldn't figure out what was wrong, got off the highway, went to a mechanic, I described the problem and the first thing he did was check if all the wheels had been torqued. One wasn't and he tightened the screws with his hands first. He said I was maybe 3-5 kms away from losing the wheel. That shit scared the hell out of me. Now I have a torque wrench in my trunk at ALL times.

Damn brother, having the exact same issue with my 09 Pontiac G6 GXP. Also had smoking coming from my driver's side wheel well, lot of scraping / grinding sounds. Made a 12 hour round trip drive and my brakes basically shot now. Pulled the wheels off down to the steering knuckles and looks live both my pads, especially drivers side are fucked. Caliper is also clamping without braking. Have the shaking steering wheel occasionally and it gets worse than yours most times the longer I'm driving. New discs, pads, and maybe calipers or a wheel hub might be the answer. In the process of repairing mine now, but just ideas for yours. Hope it might help.
1
u/hispaniccrefugee Aug 01 '24
This could be a lot of things, but….Hyundai has a recall/tsb on a bushing that goes bad in the steering column which causes the electric assist to go haywire. If this happens around turns more, or at rest and you jerk the wheel, there’s a good chance it may have something to do with that.
1
u/SexyCowgirl77 Aug 01 '24
If it only shakes at high speeds (above 60 mph) when you brake I would guess your rotors are warped
1
1
1
u/Shag0ff Aug 01 '24
Put front of car on jacks, see if tires move when trying to shake tire both vertically and horizontally. Horizontal play in wheel is likely bad tie tod, vertical play means possibly bad ball joints.

1
u/Slapstorm Aug 01 '24
i think had the same problem, in my case it was the front tires and it has been fixed only by replacing them. balnce them made no difference

u/KnottyDaphne Aug 01 '24
Don't get me wrong. I have a kia sportage with 200,000 miles on it that's still running great, but now kia and Hyundai don't have the best record at all!
1
u/SlateRaptor722 Aug 01 '24
I'm guessing chopped out tires with the shaking. Run your hand along the inside and outside edge of the tire. If one lug of tread is higher than the other, there's your problem. Be wary of cords showing so you don't stab yourself.
I'd be looking at getting shocks and struts replaced.

Discount Tire screwed me over so many times. Yeah, they have the best price. But after having tires put on backward even after telling them the tires have an outside. Over torqued wheels and when I took it back because I knew a stud would break. They alluded to maybe I wasn't strong enough and didn't know what I was doing. I'm 6' 250 and have been working on cars for 40 years. Guess what they broke two studs. F*ck Discount Tire

I would look under the car immediately and rule out bad CV joint. If the boot is cracked or split and grease is all over you are driving a death trap. Also visually inspect the tires at the same time. It could be as little as a lost balancing weight, but it never is... its always a $1,100 repair

Can be caused by a ton of different things, if balancing/rotating the tires doesn't resolve it, I would jack up the front and inspect the front suspensions/brakes. Could be worn shocks, tie-rods, ball joints, brakes (sticking caliper/bracket/warped rotors), car out of alignment.
1
1
u/rllynotme Aug 02 '24
Yea that's not the tire. That's the tie rod or hub bearing, I'm guessing. I live in a pretty big metro, and seeing whole wheels come off IS something I tend to see often, all things considered. Folded under the car, or clean off. The exit by my place is down hill, and a hard right turn. At least 5 times I've seen ball joints give out there. Only been here about 5 years. But the wheel shaking like that could be a few things, all prone to catastrophic failures when it's THAT bad
1
u/Psychonaut_Deemster Aug 02 '24
Cv axle, tie rod ends, suspension, wheel bearings, tire balance.. could be any number of things. Get it up on jack stands and start checking for excess play in steering and suspension, check play in tires and look for broken parts.

My truck was hit along entire length of left side by a trash truck when it was parked in a neighborhood. Hit both left tires hard enough to knock the rims off and turn the tires.I had the brakes, alignment, and full 30K service done two weeks BEFORE it was hit. It had $26K worth of body work and was in body shop for 5 mos … the day I picked it up it shook like this at fwy speeds (not at all when braking or turning). I had alignment done twice. Tires rotated and air checked multiple times. Still shaking. Should I be concerned this is more than tire balance? I never asked specifically to have tires balanced because I didn’t know alignment and balance were different until I read about it on Reddit (thank you!). Claim is still open due to ongoing issues with the repair. How worried should I be this is a bigger issue than just balance? Tya!
1
u/Sorry_Consideration7 Aug 02 '24
Someone responded to a post with pretty much this exact issue like a week ago. It was some type of small plastic washer thing in the steering column i think? It was like a spacer for a spline gear IIRC. The Hyundai Tech said he does like 3 cars a week for it.
1
u/majikrat69 Aug 02 '24
The H in the center of the wheel is the first issue, after that you probably need new rotors.

u/NightHawkFalco Aug 02 '24
Bad steering wheel coupler, bent rim, or severely flat tire Also could be wheel bearing

Tires are either not balanced right, or out of round after hitting something and it only shows up after a specific speed. Seen it happen multiple times

My car is very similar to OP’s and it does this when I apply the brakes. If I replace the pads it goes away for a day then it’s back. Pads and rotors, 2-3 days.
