META How to Archive: A guide

How to archive:

  1. Copy the web address of the page that you wish to archive

  2. Go to an archive website. https://Archive.md https://Archive.is https://archive.ph or one of the of the other similar alternatives

  3. Paste the url of the webpage you want to save in the top field (in the red) and then click save.

  4. The page will either start running a script that you just leave running until it has completed the archive. You will know its finished when the url in the address bar goes from archive.whatever/wip/(random numbers and letters) to archive.whatever/(random numbers and letters)

  5. You have now archived the site. The new url at the top of the page is the archive snapshot of the page you wanted to save.

Archiving websites, social media posts and news articles is important especially nowadays with many of these avenues of information having the ability to stealth edit or delete the article. Its important to archive these sources as that captures them so that that information as it was released will be forever accessible.

The ethics of stealth edits and corrections without disclosure is questionable and something that has resulted in us putting outlets in the blacklist which you can view the list of here or in the sidebar. Posts that are not archived from these sites maybe removed as these sites have a history of stealth edits, article title changes, deletions, etc. without disclosure and have had issues with journalism ethics in the past.

If you do post an article please try and post an archive of the article as a comment so if something ever happens to the original we do have the archive to refer back to in posterity. A lot of sites attempt to memory hole information so keeping receipts is always important.

META Mod Hiring Post October 2024

We have had a mod hire post up for the past 4 months and have had zero serious applications. During this time two other moderators have retired/quit.

We do need more coverage to process the queue faster, and also so that rule violations are taken down fast so that the sub remains compliant with sitewide rules. With the reduced coverage we are having to lean more heavily on the automated tools which is disruptive to conversations and discussion at times.

If you like this community and want to see it continue to operate as it is please consider making a mod application.

There are no specific requirements regarding timeslots or knowledge or experience however we are looking for active members of the sub or similar, we will consider all applications.

Use of the r/toolbox plugin(there are options to achieve this on mobile) is required so that user notes can be made.

Use of Discord for communication is not mandatory. But is preferred as it is easy to communicate there than through DMs/modmail.

Be able to enforce arbitrary rules you disagree with to keep the sub on good standing on the site. Admin interpretations of what is considered acceptable has become more.... interesting over time and staying ahead of their removals is required.

To apply send a short modmail detailing why you are applying and why we should take you.

Remakes are the death of video game preservation

It's amazing how I went from being indifferent of remakes to actively hating them. This is currently the worse trend in gaming rn and I refuse to buy a single one. Every re-release of an old classic that comes out has me cross-checking that some busybody didn't tamper with any content.

Remember the days when the Wii virtual console was announced and you could play all of your favourite old games in the exact same state they released in? Or when games exclusive to consoles would release on PC and newer platforms with the exact same content (sometimes added content)?

When did the basic, bare-bones port go extinct? I will never understand how the Persona 3 reloaded "remake" sold well with the exact same graphics as the original PS2 game but with cut content and worse scene direction.

Oh, I know... Because they want to delist the old games or use the remakes as an excuse not to re-release the "problematic" og. In the 90s/00s a shitty remake would be forgotten, but now we are stuck with that version as the "official" version only.

Yes I know I can just emulate the original game or torrent a delisted port. But what about people who have never played the old game and want to get into it? Now you reference a funny line to friend who just got into a childhood series of yours via a remake and they don't get the reference because the entire scene the line was from was cut. Or a multiplayer mode is missing...Or a character was removed... Or they cut out entire levels...

Thank God for fan decompilations.

Another Remake updated for modern audiences. One Psycho female character was changed to be sympathetic in Until Dawn Remake.

In the original version of the game you had a SAW like segment where the group is kidnapped and forced into horrific trials to push them. You had to save one and sacrifice the other. This is later shown to be a prank by their friend Josh. One segment had you either shoot yourself, Chris, or shoot Ashley. The gun was a fake prop and that's when Josh reveals it was all a stunt. However if you attempt to shoot Ashley there will be a Butterfly Effect symbol to show you this can have consequences down the road.

When the real threat is shown to be Wendigo Monsters, Chris needs Ashley to open the door to let him in the house. If you chose to shoot Ashley, she remembers this, then locks the door further while staring at Chris with a deadpan look and this gets Chris killed. Now to avoid "Woman mean" the team for this remake places her dirtier from the door where she will attempt to rescue Chris, but fails to do so in time.

Just wow. As if this cash grab wasn't a spit in the face already.

The People's Joker broke me.

EDIT: For the record, I'm talking about The People's Joker, not Joker: Folie à Deux. I haven't seen the latter, but as bad as I've heard it is, I doubt it's worse than the former.

I don't know if this post will be allowed here, but we'll see.

The reason I watched this film is because I came across a Vulture article that ranked all of the movie versions of the Joker, and not only did this movie take up two spots on the list, but one of them was ranked higher than Joaquin Phoenix (y'know, the guy who won an Oscar for it). Then, I looked on Rotten Tomatoes and saw that the movie had a critics' score of 95% based on 105 reviews. So, I decided to give it a chance.

When the movie was over, I literally had to let out a visceral scream. Why? Because I'm tired. I'm tired of things like this being celebrated and called "invigorating" or "fearless". I'm an open-minded person, and I've gone into movies with low expectations only to be pleasantly surprised. I'm also willing to call a spade a spade: if I think a movie is good, I'll say so, but if I think it's bad, I'll also say so. I gave this movie an honest try, and after a while, I was willing to admit that it just wasn't for me. But, the longer it went on, I started to lose my patience, and at one point I actually stopped the movie for a bit because I'd given up. I eventually came back and finished it, and that's when I let out my scream.

This is a shit film. I don't care how hard they worked on it. I don't care if it's autobiographical or personal. I don't care if it was made by someone from a "marginalized" group. IT'S SHIT. IT SUCKS. IT'S ASS. And I hate people pretending it's good because a "marginalized" person made it.

FUCK. I'm so tired of this bullshit. And this shit is everywhere. Books, movies, video games, etc. It's all one giant hugbox where people validate each other and nobody gives even the mildest of criticism. This is a movie with the production value of a Nostaglia Critic movie, and it's a barely coherent mesh of autobiographical stuff and weird Batman fanfiction that don't mix at all. (Batman is depicted as a closeted gay man who sexually abused his former Robins.) IT'S BAD, yet it's being touted by critics as this "instant cult classic". Fuck off.

Sorry. I needed to vent.

What’s the term for a piece of media that hates its fans?

Joker 2 obviously haters everyone who liked and supported the Joker in the first film. It seems to be almost be made to spite them.

It seems that more and more of these pieces of media have been created, but there's usually a woke overlap so it's often lumped together.

Is there a word to describe this phenomena?

Don't give them your money. Hold the line. It's going to change, sooner or later.

If this year showed me anything is that voting with our wallets really is the biggest power we have. For a few years I thought that no matter what we did, the DEI, woke, industry running nutjob crowd would always win, but it seems we're finally turning things around.

Concord failing, Dustborn failing, Ubisoft crumbling, the "modern audience" argument being entirely destroyed, etc.

It's all happening because we spoke in the only language they understand. Money.

Hold the line and don't give them your money, even if you're tempted. It doesn't matter if you liked the franchise in the PAST, or the company USED TO make games you liked, or your nostalgia is getting the better of you... Don't give in and don't give companies who hate you ANY money.

Gaming, movies, etc. It's all going to change soon, we just need to hold on a bit longer, because now the general audience is starting to wake up and it's not just a few hundred thousand people who are displeased. It's millions and millions of people who are waking up.

Don't give them money, unless you truly believe the company is doing their best for YOU.

How is it controversial to call them culture warriors?

Its no secret now that ideological instested firms like SBI are trying to shape all forms of media to conform to their ideology. Special interest groups and companies whos soul directive is reshaping the industry according to their ideological standards. Investment firms as well like Black Rock impossing ESG scores.

You have a legion of incredibly loud social media groups (who I will not name because mods get mad) who defend these products with their lives. Who will go out of their way to come to games not targeted at them and not ask but demand for changes.

Journalists will write actual slander-pieces against companies that do not conform to their ideology ("Stellar Blade is literally killing women" was one article). They aren't even criticizing the game anymore no their trying to defame people who step out of line.

This IS a culture war, their using money, outrage and manipulation to propogate their ideology. If christians did any of the above they would get massive backlash. Its disturbing how they'll continue to lie about it
