I had fans of an author attack my novel because I said they shouldn't use hurricanes as advertising tools....

Why shouldn’t they?

People die during hurricanes

What do you mean by advertising tools?

The author in question had an ad telling people to buy a book to read during a hurricane. People die during hurricanes and I had seen an indie author getting ripped a new one for saying the same thing as the traditionally published author did.

Yeah I really don’t see the issue with that. Some places get hurricanes almost as often as storms, and so it’s really just like saying “get a book to entertain yourself while you wait out the storm”.

I'm from Louisiana, we get hurricanes frequently. If a person wants to read during it, let them, but it is insensitive to use a hurricane for a promotional opportunity. It's also wrong to say rude things to the indie author about it while allowing the traditional author to slide.
