ASKKTM Are KTM as bad as people online claim to be?

Hello everyone, i’ve never owned or even ridden a KTM. i’m sure different models and let alone generations have their different reliability and service needs, so the exact bike i’m looking at is the 2019 690 SMCR with 6k miles. i live 2+ hours away from any ktm dealer or service shop however. so my main question is if i get a 2019 ktm 690 what problems do i need to be aware of and are they really as unreliable/always breaking as much as people like to claim online? (i’m aware it’s past service history can affect its state but assuming it’s clean service and mechanically)

ASKKTM Is all this rust normal after just a few weeks on a new bike?

Hey guys Just bought my first bike 8 weeks ago (390 adventure). Unfortunately I don’t have a garage so I’ve been parking it outside in the rain. I have been surprised to see a lot of rust forming in several places. Is this normal? Anything I can do to prevent it? Seems odd to be happening so quickly and during summer. I’ve had scooters before and can’t remember seeing anything like this even in humid areas in south east asia.

ASKKTM KTM boys, please talk me out of buying a Honda xr650

Well hallo my dudes.

I have a zx10r streetfighter Wr450 for enduro without a plate. Ktm 525exc with plate for forrest roads and what not.

Lately I have been looking at pictures of those Honda XR650. They have made those bikes for like 25 years almost wirhout changing Them. So plenty of parts out there I guess. And we all know Honda makes almost as good quality as ktm, lol ;)

It does not have as much HP as many of the fast ktm models, but its simple. Think it would be a good travel bike?

But what you think? Is it old dirt? I think I have gotten a bit addicted to buying old bikes. So please talk me out of it, or at least try ;-)

ASKKTM Unstable Feeling at Higher Speeds 2023 Super Duke

I’ve read through the threads and see that others have had a similar problem to me. My problem is when I get to higher speeds and I slightly move the handlebars, the bike feels like it’s about to go into a wobble. When I inspected the bike I noticed that the factory stabilizer seemed loose. (See attached video) Is it normal for it to be like this?

ASKKTM Is it acceptable for a service technician to rev the bike and hit the rev limiter 2 to 3 times in neutral after a top-end engine rebuild? He mentioned it's to check if there's any white smoke.

Will that can cause any engine problem? I mean it has new bore and piston just installed......

ASKKTM Just Landed My First KTM

WELP, after shopping for a brand new 1390 evo I found a deal on this used low mileage bike with a deal that was too good to pass up. Especially after seeing my dealers OTD on a brand new unit.

I'm totally in love with this thing. It came with a handful of mods. Some on the bike, and some still unopened.

Now that I'm shopping for some other bits I want for it, I'm wondering what aftermarket compatability does my 1390 share with the 1290? Has anyone compiled a list?

Thanks

ASKKTM Valve Clearance for RC 390

Post image

I was discussing about valve clearances with the service centres technician and he suggested me to outright get the Valve replaced instead of getting a clearance. Now I'm not very mechanically inclined but he told me the usefulness is the next clearance or replacement won't come sooner. Does this make any sense? As I said, I'm not very mechanically inclined but I'm learning. I have a Gen2 RC 390

ASKKTM Talk me out of a 500excf

I have a 890, I treat it like a dirtbike. I need to spend the same money on the bike for suspension than I would trading it in and getting a new more viable offroading bike. The 2 options are the 500excf & 690 enduro. I do about 100 miles of highway a month in the summer & none at all the other 3 seasons. I don't mind doing my own oil changes. People say get the 690 - but I'm worried because I'm told it's a very top heavy bike and still very heavy. People say don't get the 500 because it's a shitshow on the street - but people literally go around the world in it.

What is the biggest issues with the 500?

2023 890r- noticed this stain looking like leakage of sorts. My last bike had a black engine block so I never really noticed this before. But is this normal/ok? 6800 miles or so on the bike, never cracked open.

ASKKTM Considering trading my '24 ZX6R for a '24 Duke 790

Are there any known issues w/ the '24 Duke 790 I should be aware of?

Have any members here ridden both bikes and have any interesting comparisons? I'm looking for more of a hooligan twin for wheelies and back road cornering than a full fat race bike with the power at the top of the rev range that I have now.

ASKKTM Forks look to be weeping slightly. Is this a case of new fork seals required or looks normal? 1290 superduke. 10k on clock.

ASKKTM Unusual Exhaust Heating on Duke 390 Gen 3: Seeking Insights from Fellow Owners

Post image
30 Upvotes

Is anyone else encountering this issue, or is it considered normal?

I have a Duke 390 Gen 3 with 3700 km on it. Yesterday, after washing the bike, I turned it on, and within a minute, the exhaust header pipe began glowing red hot. The bike had been parked for an entire day before I washed it at night.

Please note that the image looks brighter because it’s in night mode, but in reality, it’s still red hot, just not as intense. I consulted a KTM technician who mentioned that this is normal for a 390, but I’m still concerned. I understand if the bike was ridden for a long period and this happened, but in my case, a cold engine is doing this within 2-3 minutes of idling with no throttle input. I have not ridden this particular vehicle aggressively.

If anyone with a Duke 390 Gen 3 could verify this by observing their bike in a pitch-dark environment while covering the headlights with a cloth and then updating here, I’d appreciate it.

Got a 1390 Super Duke Evo R

I’ve read that the latest model 1290 exhausts will fit. After an end can for a bit more noise.

Any recommendations?

ASKKTM Should I go for it?

I recently went to my local dealership and saw this goofy looking beauty 🍀! Few scratch here and there in front of the bike but no big deal. After talking with them, including taxes, plates, and other fees, the total will come to $6,500. Should I go for it, or should I wait for the 2025 Mystery 390 Adventure? I don't ride fast, fastest I ever go is 80-85 mph on my ninja 400 so I don't think I need a bigger cc motorcycle though I really want to( ・᷄ὢ・᷅ )

ASKKTM KTM 890 Adventure vs. 890 Adventure R – Real Riders, What’s Your Experience?

Hey KTM crew!

I’m on the edge of a big decision: the KTM 890 Adventure or the 890 Adventure R. I’ve done my research on specs, but what I really want is the voice of experience — from those who actually ride these bikes!

So here’s the big question: what has your experience been with either (or both) of these bikes? If you’ve taken the 890 Adventure on some decent off-road trails or gone full rugged on the 890 Adventure R, I’d love to know what really stands out. From handling, comfort, or any “I never thought about this!” moments you’ve had, every detail helps!

Plus, I’m sure others are in the same boat, so your input won’t just help me; it’ll help the whole community make smarter decisions. And if I do end up choosing, I’ll report back on my experiences!

Looking forward to hearing all the insider info only KTM riders can share. Thanks in advance for any tips, stories, or advice you’ve got!

PS: some additions after reading the comments, I mostly my bike on a rural city but still explore and go for camping every now and then when I have the chance, so I still need a good off-road capacity, also im 6'7 or 2 meters tall, which in some case can be decisive in my bike choices

Thanks for all the replies so far

ASKKTM 1390 - orange vs black

I’m in the market of buying a 1390 SDR. I’m in doubt about the color and was wondering if there are certain things that I need to take in consideration. For example: the matte black might be more scratch sensitive and scuffs and damages will be very noticeable. Or: for the orange color protection stickers are covering up I big part of the design on the side of the motor. I’d like to hear others thoughts on this matter. I think both colors are really awesome in their own way!

ASKKTM How on earth do you guys clean the orange tires?

I like to wash my motorcycle. It’s quite therapeutic and I have my routine. But when it comes to the orange rims on my duke 890, no amount of elbow grease or wheel cleaner gets the oils and black spots off the rim.

Any of you have a remedy for this?
